India plans to construct a new conventional-powered aircraft carrier called the INS Vishal with assistance from the United States, according to Manorama Online, a news website based in New Delhi in a Feb. 4 report.

The news site said that the aircraft carrier will be superior to China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, bought from Ukraine and refitted for purpose.

Unlike the Indian Navy’s current aircraft carrier, the INS Vishal will not be built with the Russian-style ski-jump flight deck. Instead, it will use the angled flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. The new Indian carrier will also be equipped with an electromagnetic system for launching aircraft. With this new equipment, the Indian Navy will be capable of speeding up the time it takes to launch carrier-based fighters from deck .

As the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System is fitted aboard the latest Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, the article said that INS Vishal will have the most advanced launching system in the world. China is also working to develop an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System for its planned domestically-developed carrier but has, as yet, been unsuccessful.

China’s ambitions in the Indian Ocean have become a major concern for India’s national security. To confront China’s ambition of building a blue water navy and the possibility that they will establish a naval base of the People’s Liberation Army Navy in Sri Lanka, the article said that more cooperation between India and the United States is necessary. Sources from the Indian government said that New Delhi will purchase carrier-based fighters from Washington as well.

Bloody pagoda media outlets . Manorama. .. Who said it's conventional ?

I think it will be nuke powered.

To confront china India should make the islands as military bases and fortresses.

India needs marine corps.
Marine Corps like us will take decade to mature .

What sort of missions do you have in mind, for an entire corps dedicated to amphibious assault?

On topic, I am not sure this is a good move. If we are indeed getting the EMALS (which is a game changing new technology), we ought to get maximum bang for the buck and go for nuclear propulsion.

. . .
Sir,
If India can use nuke power subs can't it make nuke powered carriers too?
Because the basic propulsion will remain same .
Not exactly, the kind of reactor will bed different. But it should be technically feasible.

we should totally go for it .
What do you think will the time frame for its development ?

For developing a nuke reactor for INS vishal? I can't be sure, but what I can say with certainity is that it won't take as long as designing and constructing INS Vishal itself.

Assuming that our scientists have a good knowhow of designing a miniature reactor of the kind fitted on INS Arihant, it should be well within their ability to design and make a large reactor for an aircraft carrier within the next 5-10 years.

(I don't know for sure how well Indian scientists have mastered reactor design by working on Arihant, or how much Russians helped.)

The bottom line is that it is easier to design a reactor for an A/C than for a sub.

Yes, But as of now when India goes for US technical help. Nuke power becomes an issue because of the NPT and CTBT.
But to operate a carrier of that big scale nuke power is the better way.
I think NSG waiver is the key.

India has many Islands, Having marine corps will make the nations think twice before invasion.

.
A question:
Suppose if we place say multiple units of arihant size reactors, will that work for our nuke power AC. Will we get lower efficiency or peak load output or reverse i mean best efficiency and higher output then the second option given below?
OR
We need a single larger reactor to run the AC.

Which is more practical and easier to handle with better performance?

It is for those islands that we have so many amphibious batallions and now a brigade, manned by the Indian army and transported by the Indian navy.

The USMC does not exist to protect little islands, they exist for amphibious assault of enemy shores. They exist as expeditionary forces to invade distant lands. As of now, India has no such requirement. And before we have such ambitions, we have a lot of ground to cover, a lot of other capabilities to develop. An Indian marine corps is nowhere on the radar for our defence planners.

Navy is the key for India's defence. India has vast Maritime interests to protect from Malacca straits to Horn of Africa.

Having a Marine corps is the need of the hour because of Chinese rise.
