India searching another line of fighter jet: Parrikar

India is going for F16 or F35. I can see parrikar interest in f16 from first day, but India can also go for single engine f35 Naval version. Rafale are too expensive, it was wise decision to limit it for 36 , it opens option of f35 .

.
You lacks of a medium weight/ low cost /single engine fighter like J10 category.

Well, thats what we are looking for, F-16/Gripen NG or LCA MK2

LCA Mk1 with Kaveri engine too acceptable for western sector for interceptor role.

India searching another line of fighter jet: Parrikar

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today stated that the Defence Ministry’s strategic partnership (SP) model is likely to be finalised by the end of this month. Among other major issues he also said that India requires another single engine fighter jet line and this will be done under the SP model. Efforts are being made to identify the Indian company and Western partner for this work.

Parrikar also said that work is going on to provide the army with new assault rifles. And that India aims to become a major weapons exporter.

The developments were shared at a press conference in Delhi today. These were the highlights from the Defence Minister’s statements.

1) The SP model is in the final stage and is likely to be concluded this month. A meeting will be held next week to finalise it. He says the model would have been finalised in December but has been delayed by a month due to the year end.

2) Parrikar confirms India requires another single engine fighter line that will be done under the SP model.

3) The SP model is the Defence Ministry’s important Make in India policy. Under the model, the government is to select private Indian firms to exclusively manufacture military equipments for a specified period. The model was proposed by the Dhirendra Singh Committee in July, 2015. The Defence Ministry then formed an expert committee headed by former DRDO chief, VK Aatre, to formulate the criteria for selection of strategic partners. In April last year, the MOD made the Aatre report public.

4) Parrikar said the Indian company for the single engine fighter jet will be identified through the Aatre committee model. And the western partner for the new fighter line will depend on the Transfer of Technology (ToT) and the financial proposal of the Original Equipment Manufacturer..

5) Competitive process will be followed to select the western fighter to be made in India. The government to government deal will be inked after selection of the aircraft.

6) Parrikar makes it clear that a competition for twin engine made in India fighters will also be considered, but not this year.

7) Regarding the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) deal with Russia, Parrikar said aspects of production and technology transfer are being looked into before signing up for the aircraft.

8) He also refuted media reports on additional requirement/procurement of Rafale jets as speculative.

9) Parrikar said option for Tejas-Light Combat Aircraft Mark-2, an advanced version, has been kept open. He added the Naval LCA is to be developed only for technology demonstration.

10) Following the controversy of the new army chief, Gen Bipin Rawat, superseding a senior officer, Parrikar said the selection of the chief is the prerogative of the government. Although he added all the candidates were equally good.

11) Parrikar also said, "We aim to achieve a $2 billion defence export target by the end of this government's term (2019)."

12) India’s Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to supply $300-400 million worth military equipments to friendly nations this year.

13) Indian conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed some contracts with Vietnam for providing ships, which were discussed during a bilateral visit.

14) On possibility of defence exports to Afghanistan, Parrikar holds cards close to his chest and merely says Afghanistan is s good friend.

15) There has been an increase in Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) productivity this year, which is in arms and ammunition, not vehicles as was in the past. Parrikar said approval has been given for fast tracking the procurement of assault rifles for the Special Forces.

16) On a new assault rifle for the Army, Parrikar says four months have been given to the OFB to provide a new design. If this does not work, the procurement will be done under the fast track mode.
I like F16s more but that is getting phased out in mejority. Is there a possibility that F35 enters the race being single engine jet?

Another five years of speculation on PDF .

Will the F-16 still have a product line in 2021?
Is India adapting the schedule based on when they think Gripen E is fully qualified?
I really don't have much idea what benefits will Gripen bring to India, strategic, technology, maneuverability?

BYE BYE LCA program. You were destroyed by a management that had no idea what it was doing; a sad end to a beautiful platform.
LCA mark 1 is already confirmed order while mark 2 will reach FOC maybe by 2020s. It's not a bye bye deal if you read his official statement.

Take away from this:
LCA chapter closed
No more rafales
No progress on fgfa
Nope LCA chapter is not closed even in this media disscussion it has been confirmed the mark 1 order while mark development FOC to be achieved by 2020s. There is another tendor for twin engine jets as well where Rafale has better chance. So yes there will be more Rafales, then naval order is still to be confirmed that is another area to look after. FGFA is most probably stopped in tracks and India will purchase PAKFA in mejority numbers.

Try to understand what the following means,

1. "another single engine fighter line". The FIRST line is LCA.

2. Yes, no more Rafales. This was pretty clear from day one. Its only the fan boys who went berserk.

3. "..aspects of production and technology transfer are being looked into before signing up for the aircraft". This means progress. From screw driver tech, to actual ToT similar to Su 30 MKI.
DM has mentioned twin engine fighter also separate.

Looks like its Parrikar who is saying no more Rafales.

So are you claiming that you are smarter than the entire IAF and MoD establishment and the DM himself ?

India did the same thing for 50 Mirage 2000, so its not like this is the first time.
Nope that looks like editor was dumb to not post twin engine fighter details DM mentioned in meeting.

.
It's gonna be f16 (on steroids version).... look at the part where he stresses on 'medium weight single engine fighter'!!!
LM production line will be bought with promise for future f35 for navy!!!

F16 or Gripen.
If bought , won't be at the cost of Rafales.

At the moment , the investments made already clearly shows At least 6 squadrons of Rafales will be procured.

Further as I explained earlier in the same thread to another member, the deal of Rafale also included costs for India specific upgrades, Infrastructure at 3 new air bases, training, spares, long term service contract, training , first large tranche of Missiles and Guided Munitions, re investment in India and help in critical technologies.

After these costs are removed , the real fly away costs of Rafale is revealed , which is near 90 million USD. And any further orders will be in this tune only.

And Rafale surely deserves to have ~15 million USD cost more than F16[considering latest order of F16 by UAE ].

Wasting billions of rupees for technology demonstration. Are they excepting Indians fool?. I hope people ask these questions from them that how and why they waste that much money for technology demonstration only?

.
Yes, India is interested in producing a second single engine fighter besides LCA.
They are choosing between F-16 and Gripen at this time.

It is in the US interest that India is strong, and unlikely that they will block spare parts to India
just because it chooses Gripen.
While conceivable they might block spare parts, that would affect F-16 even worse.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Talking about the next fighter competition of India, Parrikar said the need for a second production line for single engine aircraft is felt besides the one for Tejas.

"The second line of single engine requirement is also felt for which we are thinking of using the strategic partnership route," he said.

Parrikar said few of the initial aircraft may come off the shelf by the "rest would be made in India increasing the Indian capability in aviation".

He said the process for the next fighter aircraft will include both selection through normal process and government- to-government contract.

If you go for another single engine fighter that means LCA Tejas is born to die before proving itself .

if you kept the door open for LCA Tejas what is the logic of keeping similar platform just because its indigenous while operating 400 same single engine fighter .

if no follow on purchase of Rafale as were discuss many informed member here in pdf and in media to speculate about follow on purchase of Rafale as ''make in India' skim what the logic of just 36 fighter for IAF only .

@PARIKRAMA
Simply because we lack numbers as we have to increase our squadron strength by more than 10 squadrons at present. We don't want single fighter capturing mejority share as it will lead to same situation in which we are today because of MiGs. Currently we have the funds to procure the much needed offensive defense firepower, so we must utilize every penny available from defense budget. Hope you get our point.

I dont think that Indian Air Force lacks number because when its about national security , Indian military planners doesnt take any chance.

Actually Indian Air Force is very strong .

Here its more on Indian Establishment and United States Establishment regarding the F16 production line.

Indian industries do produce the raw material which is use for the production of fighter planes , radars, spares and even software etc.

You are most welcome to deny my calculations.

When its about national security , Indian Establishment never takes any chance , we have learn alot from 1962 war .

If we had then what were we doing in last decade and initial years of this decade. There is a lot which we common folks don't know but we are not illeterate that we will not understand when nothing is being done for forces.
