Russia’s Kaliningrad shipyard is expected to finish the first of the three frigates which are being manufactured for the Indian Navy. The frigate will be ready by March 2010, according to the executive director of the Russian-Indian venture BrahMos Aerospace.

The BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles are scheduled to undergo test launches in the Baltic and in India, as soon as the first frigate is delivered from Russia. The three Project 11356 frigates for the Indian Navy will cost 1.6 billion dollars to India and the contract was signed in July, 2007. Earlier, in 1997, a similar contract was signed by two sides, when India bought three Krivak-class frigates – the INS Talwar, Trushul and Tabar, which were delivered in 2004. The new frigates are the same-class, but will be armed with the new modern Russian-Indian BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles. The first frigate – INS Teg, was inducted in service during December, 2009 and the second one, the Tarkash in June 2010. The Project 11356 class, frequently known as Tawlar, is a new frigate class which is specifically built for the Indian Navy. The Talwar guided missile frigates are a modernized and improved version of the Krivak III class frigates.

The Talwar can deliver speeds up to 30 knots and transport more than 4,000 tonnes. Capable of accomplishing tracking, eliminating enemy submarines and large surface ships, the Talwar is the perfect addition for the Indian navy.:azn::azn::tup::yahoo:

WoW!!! :yahoo:

When inducted it will be the most powerful surface combatant of the Indian Navy.

This year three frigates will be inducted into the navy.

Excellent news.

But these are not the first warships with Brahmos. Kolkata class already is equipped with those killers.

Good news will be a potent attacking force in the Indian Ocean and beyond

Actually Rajput class are the first ships which were modified to have Brahmos as Kolkata class is not inducted yet.

1) This is the first ship with dedicated Brahmos VLS launchers.
2) This is the first ship in Indian navy to get VLS surface-to-air area defence missile Shtil-1 (considering Barak-1 as point defence system).

Even in Kolkata class the missile is launched through Vertical launch system. This is not the first warship. As the INS Kolkata is expected to join the forces before this Frigate.

BrahMos Aerospace has developed a universal vertical launcher module (UVLM) for the BrahMos N1 missile.

The first variant of BrahMos N1 has been installed on front-line warships of the Indian Navy from 2005.

Second point, I think is true. Can you give the source for that ?

^^^there are many warhsips where the missile is launched vertically...talking specifically about brahmos..even INS ranvir launched brahmos vertically very recently which is already in service unlike Kolkata....but this frigate has a dedicated Brahmos VLS launchers. (?? kinetic)

And all the 3 frigates are completed by the beginning of 2011. 3 frigates in 3 years, wow.

I don't think our shipyards can build even a single frigate in this time-frame. I just checked a time-frame on the web and the destroyer of P15A which was launched in 2010 will get commissioned in 2013, 3 years ?/ seriously ?/
