India: Religion, terror and the majority February 2011

India: Religion, terror and the majority

The confessional statement of Swami Asseemanand – a self-styled godman, originally Jatin Chatterji from Hooghly district in West Bengal – has finally put to rest lingering doubts, if any credible ones remained, over the involvement of extremist elements from within the Hindutva fold in acts of terror and extremism in India. The swami’s leaked confession has implicated a group of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharaks (motivator activists) and other Hindutva adherents in the bomb blasts in Malegaon in 2006 and 2008, on the Samjhauta Express in 2007, in Ajmer Sharif in 2007 and Mecca Masjid in 2007. All these had earlier been blamed on Muslims.

Even the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has long presented itself as the defender of ‘Hindu values’, and persistently and strenuously denied that any Hindu could ever be involved in such activity, now finds itself on the back foot. The Congress party, of course, is quietly gloating – the leak, almost certainly engineered by the party itself, has come as a blessing to the beleaguered ruling party, reeling under rising prices, scams at the highest levels and old ghosts (in the shape of the Bofors corruption scandal of the 1980s) coming back to haunt it. However, it is wary of making too much of the new turn of events, anxious over appearing anti-Hindu, a fear that has led it to soft-pedal the issue in the past.

Beyond the political gamesmanship and irrespective of the motives behind the leak, it is high time that the political class, going beyond political divides, recognises the growing phenomenon of Hindutva terror. Notwithstanding the fact that one of the first of such acts in modern India – the assassination of Mohandas K Gandhi – was committed by a Hindu fanatic, it is only in recent years that there has been public recognition of the increasing evidence supporting Hindutva extremism. The modus operandi has been typical: engineer a bomb blast, and wait for the blame to be cast on Islamist elements. Given the stereotyping of Muslims as extremists, such blame tends to stick – the Indian security apparatus in particular seems to believe that any terrorist act is automatically the handiwork of Islamist elements, and wholesale arrests of Muslims inevitably follow, often without credible evidence.

This is not to deny that radical Islam continues to be a problem in India and the region as a whole, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But cases of Indian Muslims being involved in such acts have been sporadic, and cannot be termed a rising trend. While the more dramatic instances of violence in recent years – such as the attacks of 26 November 2008 in Mumbai – have been more or less conclusively traced to Pakistan, Indian Muslims as a group nevertheless continue to live under suspicion for that heinous event. Even if most non-Muslims do not see India’s Muslims as terrorists themselves, the latter remain under suspicion for harbouring sympathies with radical Islam.

Meanwhile, evidence indicating the growth of Hindutva extremism has consistently been swept under the carpet or dismissed as the actions of an inconsequential lunatic fringe. This has been the approach not only by BJP state governments but also by the Congress. First came the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit and others, following their involvement in the Malegaon blasts of 2006. The Ajmer Sharif bomb blasts of the following year have also been laid at the doorstep of Hindutva elements by the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad. There have also been smaller incidents, such as the blasts of Nanded (Maharashtra) in 2006 and Goa in 2009, in which the inept Hindutva-aligned attackers blew themselves up rather than their intended targets.

We must remember that it is not only fringe organisations, such as Abhinav Bharat and the Sanatan Sanstha, that have been implicated in these events. Attackers have also come from within the fount of Hindutva ideology, the RSS, and the BJP, the political offspring of the Sangh.

A dangerous game

Swami Aseemanand’s confession, made before a magistrate and hence admissible in court, now provides an indication of how seriously Hindutva terror must be taken. The first step, of course, is uncovering the Hindutva extremist network, and prosecuting those involved. But the matter does not end there. The more vital concern is recognising that an ideology that bases itself on hatred of others (in this case, Muslims) has been successful in alienating minorities and increasing their isolation in India.

In fact, the signs have been clear ever since the early days of the Hindutva campaign in the 1950s, with the RSS’s emphasis on martial training and the involvement of its cadres in post-Partition violence. The virulent propaganda of these groups, demonising religions other than Hinduism (and denying, of course, the vast pluralism within Hinduism itself), inevitably creates a mindset that predisposes adherents to violence. Groups such as the Sanatan Sanstha give their members training in the use of firearms, and the Goa bomb attack was allegedly planned at the state headquarters of this organisation. Further, with the BJP’s lack of electoral success at the national level in the last two elections, some proponents of Hindutva have begun to question the efficacy of democratic politics, and to espouse extremist action instead.

Another worrisome aspect is the involvement of members of the security forces – as in the case of Lt Col Purohit, a serving army officer – in these networks. Over the years there has been a steady infiltration of Hindutva elements into various wings of government. The more extreme elements among these have provided expertise, materials and intelligence to those bent on violence, while others soft-pedal and cover up such acts. In the case of Pakistan, we have seen how the state itself can become weakened by a takeover by a fundamentalist, extremist religious ideology that manages to spread its tentacles in the mechanisms of government functioning.

Without downplaying the need to combat extremism of all hues, all players must recognise that Hindutva terror in India poses special challenges. While radical Islam and its violent expression is hugely damaging and dangerous, its excuse cannot be used to turn India towards becoming a fascist state. If the ideology of extremist Hindutva takes hold, the potent mixture of politics and religion, in a country where 81 percent of the population is Hindu, is a certain recipe for fascism.

6 Suggestions to Hindu Terrorists| Dreams of a Typewriter

Last night I ended up reading the Mumbai Police chargesheet on Abhinav Bharat (the Hindu terror group responsible for various blasts across India), the forensic report (what passes for night-time reading in my life) and Aseemanand’s (one of the Abhinav Bharat member) hand-written confession in Hindi (thanks to ER for fishing it out for me). After digesting all this information I have decided to...wait for it...convert my religion to Presbyterian Church of East Africa. The reason: I demand my religion, nay deserve my religion, to be represented a better class of terrorists. Seriously, Islam get Al Qaeda, Christianity gets IRA and Hinduism gets these monkeys? I would rather go with Somalian Pirates (East African Church kind)

The only time I will get to use Abhinav Bharat and masterminds in the same sentence is when saying, “Abhinav Bharat is to masterminds like velociraptor is to friendly pet.” While I am opposed to terrorism and violence, I am more vehemently opposed to stupidity. Hence, I am forthwith dispensing six pieces of advice to any Hindu out there aspiring to be a terrorist. Please heed to my advice or pretty much don’t blow up stuff, although preferably the latter:

1. Pick an issue from this century. According to Aseemanand’s confession, the reason they decided to target the Mecca Masji, Hyderabad in 2007 was “the Nizam of Hyderabad had decided to go with Pakistan in 1947, and they should be punished for that.” Seriously? That’s your plan? Punishing a city for an unsuccessful decision taken by a Nizam 60 years ago? I mean were they hoping to kill Nizam’s great-great-grandchild in the blast? Its like George W Bush invading Iraq because his daddy once had a beef with Saddam (oh, wait...)

2. No need to gift-wrap the evidence. While the movie industry and newspapers have convinced us of the incompetence of police in this country, there is no need to go out of your way to help them in their investigation. And video-taping yourself planning the bomb blasts and then leaving the video (with quality audio) on your laptop is clearly doing too much. You might as well...uh...I can’t think of doing anything else to make it easier for the police.

karthic-sri-albums-mine-picture4498-abhinav-bharat.jpg

...except may be this.
Yet, this is precisely what these guys did. In the seized laptop of Sudhakar Dwivedi, police found videos of all the Abhinav Bharat members holding meetings in Faridabad, Ujjain and Bhopal discussing their plans.

3. Know thy enemy. Having someone to hate is critical for the existence of a terrorist group. So these guys decided to hate Muslims. Totally understandable, what with Muslims being minority and all, they clearly must be the oppressor in India. But once you have made Muslims your sworn enemies, don’t go recruiting them for your agenda. Aseemanand confesses that Sunil Joshi, who executed the Ajmer blast, had two Muslims helping him in the bombing! What the hell? It’s like US Army paying Taliban for its troop security (oh, wait...)

4. Don't be an asshole. As terrorist group names go, Abhinav Bharat is not exactly the most terror-inspiring one; come to think of it, Abhinav (meaning innovative) Bharat doesn’t even mean anything. Then why get into copyright infringement with a perfectly decent NGO? Abhinav Bharat is a charitable trust working in Mumbai since 2001 (their website is the first to pop up when you google Abhinav Bharat) blissfully unaware of any bomb plots. Now they have to run around issuing press releases and convincing every tom, dick and harry that the only crime they ever committed was trying to popularize hockey (during IPL!)

5. Give us a little context please. According to ever-so-informative video tapes seized by police, Abhinav Bharat agenda is to replace constitution of India to include more Hindutva in every aspect of society. It goes on suggesting more drastic measures like building forts in Madhya Pradesh (for real) for youth to have something to look up to etc. And the bomb blasts were just a way of drawing attention and uniting the Hindus. But then why didn’t they claim responsibilities for the blasts? For more than two years after the beginning of these bomb blasts, everyone including the police continued to think it was some Islamic extremist! Were we supposed to guess? Clearly these guys are loud as a mouse squeak.

6. Do not employ sentimental old fools. The worst part is Aseemanand confessed not because of police pressure or desperation but because of an honest to god, feel-good-movie style change of heart. Aseemanand was turned to the path of love and penance by Kalim - his cellmate in Hyderabad jail - who helped him by bringing food and water. Despite being a Muslim, Kalim’s helpful nature led Aseemanand’s conscience to ask him “to do prayschit [repent].” How is a hardcore terrorist organization supposed to maintain its operational secrecy if one of its primary member has a conscience?

These are the lessons learnt from history. So in future please keep them in mind while you mindlessly prepare for a random attack on innocent citizens who are likely to have played no role whatsoever in your imagined atrocities against Hindus (they may very well be Hindus.) As we all know, learning from your past mistakes helps you avoid them in future. Just like US having failed to miserably in Iraq and Afghanistan is no longer thinking of invading Iran (oh wait...)

http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/malegaon-blast-case-cbi-opposes-bail-to-nine-accused-81923?pfro

Mumbai: The nine Muslims who have spent four years in jail for the Malegaon blast should not be granted bail, said the CBI in court today.

On the 17th of this month, the men asked that they be released because of Swami Assemanand's confession that right-wing Hindu groups were responsible for the blast which killed 37 people in the communally-sensitive town of Malegaon in Maharashtra in 2006.

But the CBI told a special court for the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) that Swami Aseemanand's confession - recorded in December in a Delhi court - has yet to be verified. Other than that, the Muslim men have produced no valid reason for their bail.

The Malegaon investigation was handed over to the CBI in December 2006. For the next three years, the CBI did not submit any report on the case. In February last year, it said that there was no evidence to charge the nine men jailed for the Malegaon blast, but stressed that it believes they are indeed responsible for the terror attack.

That remains its stand in court, boosting the demand by politicians to ask that the government to submit a white paper on Hindu terror and the persecution of Muslim youth.

"LK Advani had said that all Muslims are not terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims. I can also say now that all RSS men are not terrorists but all terrorists are RSS men!'' said Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh today.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If it is indeed Right wing extremism that caused these blasts, why hold these young men ??

Congress is indeed playing a very good game - whip up the passions among the Muslims by portraying an apparition of 'Hindu' terror, while at the same time not releasing the Muslim youths - secure the votes in the elections and let the case be buried in the quagmire called Indian judicial system forever.

Confusion over confessions

Probe into terror attacks is mired in vagueness as various persons have admitted to same crime

With investigation so far linking the banned SIMI, Swami Aseemanand and associates, and David Headley with Samjhauta Express and some other blasts, the probe into the case is mired in a maze of confusion.

Top SIMI commanders Safdar Nagori, Kamruddin Nagori and Aamil Parvez had, in their narco test, ruled out involvement of Lt Col Srikant Purohit or Pragya Singh Thakur in the Malegaon blasts and owned up to the Samjhauta Express explosion.

However, Aseemanand has reportedly claimed that he and his associates — Riteshwar, Sadhvi Pragya and Sunil Joshi — met at Riteshwar’s house in Valsad in June 2006 to target Muslim localities with a view to avenge spiralling terror strikes by jihadi groups in the country.

“I told everybody that bomb ka jawab bomb se dena chahiye, (I told everyone we should answer bombs with bombs). At that meeting, it was also decided to target Samjhauta Express,” if Aseemanand’s confessions are to be believed.

Further muddying the picture is well-known disclosure by Faiza Outalha, former wife of David Coleman Headley, about his role in Samjhauta bombing.

Even before the investigators came to know about Headley’s link and zeroed in on the Hindu outfits, top SIMI leaders had admitted the involvement of SIMI and jihadi elements in the Samjhauta train carnage and Malegaon blasts of 2006. Apart from the Samjhauta Express and Malegaon blasts, Nagori and his associates have also confessed to SIMI’s role and involvement of Muslims in terror attacks in Mumbai, Aurangabad, Hyderabad, Ajmer and the shootout at the American consulate in Kolkata.

Nagori told a team of doctors of FSL, Bangalore, “In the Samjhauta Express blasts, some persons from Pakistan had come and they had purchased the suitcase cover at Kataria Market, Indore. One person (from SIMI) Tanzeem had helped them to get the suitcase cover stitched. SIMI leader Abdul Razak had helped Pakistanis in the Samjhauta Express blasts.”

The banned outfit’s commander revealed that meetings were held by SIMI at Kurla, Kapadia Nagar and Mira Road in Mumbai for executing the terror attacks on Samjhauta Express and other blasts in the country.

During the drug interrogation, Nagori revealed that SIMI has a strong presence in Maharashtra, including Malegaon, and he was "aware of the complicity of Muslims in the 2006 Malegaon blasts".

The 32-page narco analysis test report of Safdar Nagori, Kamruddin and Aamil Parvez (a copy of the FSL report is with The Pioneer) quotes Nagori as having said, "In the Malegaon blasts (2006), some of the Muslim members were involved and that he (Nagori) was aware of it. SIMI members were involved in the Samjhauta Express train blasts."

Interestingly, the narco analysis test reports of the trio were studied by the ATS, Mumbai, which had subsequently questioned them.

The Madhya Pradesh Police had arrested the top SIMI commanders, including the Nagoris and Parvez in March 2008.

Nagori also revealed during the narco test that Razak (who had helped the Pakistanis in Samjhauta train blasts) had informed him beforehand about the Samjhauta Express blasts. Razak had sought the help of West Bengal SIMI president Misbah-ul-Islam for the Samjhauta explosions. Razak has a number of relatives in Pakistan, according to Nagori's revelations. Kamruddin Nagori also concurred with Razak's involvement in the Samjhauta Express blasts.

Wrong - any killing is to be condemned whether it is by a Hindu or a Muslim.Period.

But the issue here is the false fabrication of evidence to portray a nationalistic organisation as an extremist org in order to secure some votes. I oppose that only.

You dont need to be a Gandhian to say that dude. You are confusing between being meek and being righteous. I am the latter , not the former.
