Indian army says fired at from Pakistan side in Kashmir
Thu Aug 21, 2008 1:35pm IST

SRINAGAR (Reuters) - Indian army troops came under mortar fire on Thursday from across a military control line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, an army spokesman said.

"Our troops did not retaliate," Indian army spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel S.D. Goswami said. "We are checking whether mortars were fired by terrorists or Pakistani soldiers."

No one was hurt in the shelling in Rajouri sector on the Line of Control (LoC), or ceasefire line, in south Kashmir.

There have been a series of clashes in the past few months along the 742-km de facto border after relative calm following the beginning of a peace process between the nuclear-armed rivals in 2004.

New Delhi says Islamist guerrillas regularly slip into India under cover of shooting by Pakistani troops to join an insurgency in Kashmir that began in 1989.
Islamabad denies the charge.

The two countries have fought two wars over Kashmir, which they claim in full but rule in part, since independence from Britain in 1947.

Looks like we are truly back in the 1990s. Pak Army doing their thing, ISI doing their thing, and weak civilian government just hanging on.

India is going to truly miss Musharraf.

Pak firing vitiating atmosphere: India

Press Trust of India
Friday, August 22, 2008, (New Delhi)
With Pakistani troops violating the ceasefire again by resorting to cross-border shelling, India on Thursday night described the developments as "unacceptable" and said these vitiate the atmosphere between the two countries.

"It is a matter of concern," Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma told PTI when asked to comment on yet another incident involving Pakistani shelling on Indian positions in Nowshera in Jammu and Kashmir early this morning.

Pakistani forces resorted to intermittent firing of mortar shells in Jhangarh area of Nowshera sector in Rajouri district for 45 minutes from 0640 hours, marking the 27th violation since January this year of the five-year-old border ceasefire pact.

"It is unacceptable.. This does not help improve the relation but vitiates the atmosphere," Sharma said reflecting the Indian government's anger over continued provocations despite repeated calls from New Delhi to desist from such actions.

The minister noted that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had himself "clearly and firmly" conveyed India's concerns to his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani in Colombo on the margins of SAARC Summit earlier this month.

more of a diversion tactics by PA to divert the attention from internal politics

Interesting that the accusations come in the backdrop of India's expressed displeasure with Pakistan over raising Kashmir at international fora again. More of the same old blame game again.

Nitesh:
more of a diversion tactics by PA to divert the attention from internal politics

Oh please!

As if the average Pakistani cares about an alleged ceasefire violation announced by the Indians no less, with the PA often stating that they have no idea what the Indians are talking about.

If these things were done for 'domestic consumption', then Pakistan would be initiating these and raising a hue and cry in the media over India violating the ceasefire. Instead we see that it is the Indians who follow that modus operandi.

.
obviously AM sahab you will say that this is just hue and cry and we will say that it is absolutely correct, but what makes u say that the news is absolutely wrong?

Exactly !

So stop blaming us & we will stop countering it , it is as simple as that.

i am sure you got my point.

Oh stop pretending. You know it, we know it. The Pak army is violating the ceasefire.

As for the theories why, there are several, inlucuding:

1. Show of support for kashmiri separatists
2. Lack of control of civilian govt. over the PA.

etc.
