New Delhi: After the Balakot strike and the dogfight with the Pakistani air force in February, India is looking to increase its stockpile of missiles with the Modi government ordering weaponry worth about $700 million for the Indian Air Force from Russia.

These include air-to-air missiles with an extended range as well air-to-surface missiles, ThePrint has learnt.

Highly placed sources said close to 300 short-range air-to-air missiles, the R-73, and 400 medium-range air-to-air guided missiles, the RVV-AE, also known as the R-77, have been ordered.

The R-77 is the Russian counterpart to the US medium-range AIM-120 AMRAAM missile. The American make was unsuccessfully used by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to target Indian Su-30 MKIs on 27 February, a day after the IAF strikes on Balakot.

These missiles are designed to arm the Russian-made MiG and Sukhoi aircraft.

The order, meant to boost the IAF’s capability, also includes a radar-busting missile, the X-31, said the sources.

Russia, India eye longer range missiles

Sources said Russia has also offered to help India for future orders with missiles with ranges longer than the ones it currently possesses.

According to Russian Tactical Missiles Corporation, the developer and producer of most of the Russian air-to-air missiles, the R-73’s range is 30 km. The range of its latest version, the RVV-MD, is 40 km.

It’s the same case with the R-77, which can hit targets at a distance of up to 80 km, while its latest version, the RVV-SD, can go up to 110 km.

Russia is currently offering its partners globally the short-range air-to-air RVV-MD missiles, medium-range air-to-air RVV-SD missiles, long-range air-to-air RVV-BD missiles, and medium-range air-to-air RVV-AE (R-77) missiles.

Integrating other missiles — for instance, the Israeli Derby air-to-air missiles — with the Su-30 will require permission from Russia, said the sources.

“Russia and India can jointly implement the programme of modernisation of the IAF’s air-to-air missiles. All the requirements of the Air Force can be discussed and met. The work could start as soon as possible once the formal request is made,” added the sources.

How stupid can you get. What about the 4 unfired Russian missiles that were supposed to shoot down an F16. With this brain power or a desperate coverup I think in five years Pakistani flag will be flying over the Lal Qila.

Kindly interpret actions and leave the rhetoric aside.

Given the tension with US for arms procurement with Russia, the last thing India needed was another purchase unless it was essential or apt.

If the Russian missles had failed, IAF was in no hurry to procure and instead would have waited for Astra and Derby to rearm itself.

Given the high cost of this deal and the way it was conducted with zero fanfare, I think India actually went ahead to restock and to purchase tech for anti-radar missiles.

I am just thinking out loud, no need to react, a response is better appreciated.

700 million dollars for 700 missiles, they are too much expensive.

Exactly as i said Russia wont allow isreali missiles to be integrated with their jets. Lastly Russians would have exported similar missiles to equip chinese su 35.

Pakistan should try to seek the PL-15 and Pl-10E for its JF-17s as soon as they become available. The 26 JF-17Bs need to become EW aircraft and 2 per squadron should allow the fighters to have a fighting chance against any air to air or ground launched SAM if they can be equipped with modern jamming pods.

A few hundred Pl-15 and PL-10Es and modern Jammers for the JF-17B and Pakistan should be able to hold its own with its continued commitment to pilot training and C4ISR excellence.

Looks like the Russians said NO to the integration of the Derby-ER to the Su-30MKI's.... and what India has ordered is no different to what she alredy has in their stocks. Just replacing expired missiles and bringing inventory levels to war fighting levels it seems.

If its the 110 km range, I think they will be able to match our c-5s (and SD-10Bs). Do recall US came up with c-7 around the same time, that tells they wanted to outmatch the latest Russian iteration with theirs.

If its the 110 km range, I think they will be able to match our c-5s (and SD-10Bs). Do recall US came up with c-7 around the same time, that tells they wanted to outmatch the latest Russian iteration with theirs.

Apparently it was changed halfway to the SD but the AE makes the bulk of the order. While it does match the range the Russian missiles are still outsticked by both the c5 and Sd-10 with much worse results for the R-77 series below 15k where the denser air and the Stellis mesh control system makes more drag.

Unfortunately, the MKi’s can either do just this or the I-Derby ER which is still outranged. Both are great missiles with a High Pk and the derby having better ECCM to the Aim-120C7 but the WEZ is less than the C-5.

The PAF continues to retain first shot capability in most scenarios, the MKis just have to dodge them all - not exactly an easy feat against an AMRAAM despite as many fake patches as the IAF unashamedly prints.
