If you have been following all the hacking news recently, you would have seen that most such stories say the hack originated from China. No, it's not a conspiracy theory to indict the Chinese technophiles; China indeed is the world leader in hacking.

A report by Akamai Technlogies says the country deserve much of the blame for the spate of hack attacks late last year. The report lists the top ten countries where hacks originated in the last quarter of 2012. India was in eighth place with 2.3 percent of the world's attack traffic coming from our country during the fourth quarter of last year. In fact, India's share has decreased from 2.5 percent in the Q3 and 3 percent in comparison to the year-ago period.

With 41 percent of all major hacking activity coming from China, the country is far and away the most prolific in that time period. When it comes to hacking, the top three nations are China, USA and Turkey. While China and USA can be considered cyber-attack powerhouses, Turkey accounted for 4.7 percent of the world's attack traffic. In fact, Turkey's share increased by nearly 10 percent over the previous quarter.

At the bottom of the list is Hungary, which accounted for 1.4 percent of the cyber-attack traffic, narrowly beating out South Korea. Italy was placed in the ninth spot with 1.6 percent share, while Romania accounted for 2.8 percent of the world's attack traffic and is placed in seventh place, with the town of Ramnicu Valcea notorious for being a bit of safe haven for cyber criminals. Brazil, sixth in rankings, is the only Southern Hemisphere country on the list and accounted for 3.3 percent of the world's attack traffic.

Hackers from some countries carry out a lot of attacks, but consequently are also targetted by law enforcement authorities and ethical hackers. One such example, Taiwan accounts for 3.7 percent of hacks, but 12.7 percent of the computers in the country had been attacked by malware, a Sophos study found. Russia was fourth on the list with 4.3 hacking share. A recent attack on 40 companies, including Apple, Facebook and Twitter, is said to have originated from Russia.

Top Ten Hackers

1. China - 41 percent

China accounted for 41 percent of the world's attack traffic during the fourth quarter of last year, making the country the top source of cyber assaults. China's share increased from 33 percent in the previous quarter and 13 percent in the year-ago period, according to Akamai.

Investigations have discovered a sophisticated hacker network in China. Some members are connected to China's military, though the extent of these official operations is unknown. The government and its state-run media continue to deny China's involvement in international hacking incidents.

2. United States - 10 percent

The U.S. accounted for 10 percent of the world's attack traffic during the fourth quarter of last year, putting the country in 2nd place. The U.S.'s share dropped from 13 percent in the previous quarter and matched its percentage from the year-ago period.

The U.S. is home to members of some of the world's most notorious hacker groups, including Anonymous and AntiSec.

3. Turkey - 4.7 percent

Turkey's share increased from 4.3 percent in the previous quarter and fell from 5.6 percent in the year-ago period.

4. Russia - 4.3 percent

5. Taiwan - 3.7 percent

6. Brazil - 3.3 percent

7. Romania - 2.8 percent

8. India - 2.3 percent

9. Italy - 1.6 percent

10. Hungary - 1.4 percent

I doubt USA is far behind in hacking than China.Hacking is a delicate matter, and the main target is to hack properly, yet remain completely undetected.Spoofing IP,using proxy and various other techniques make them near impossible to detect from where the attack was generated.so,its understandable that they are behind China on getting detected.

As for India,we have some of the very best known hackers around the world.also,we have an extensive defence program where we use hackers, but you'll hear very few things about them.also, its not India's doctrine to leave "card" behind to let the victim know it was them.that might be the reason that the detection is so low.. :azn:

hacking is better then spying... Both are almost same thing. These days you can get almost everything saved/control from/by net. So its not bad... But only when used on other country :D

So, the Chinese are bad at this and get blamed for almost half of all cyber and hacking attacks in the world because of they are not good hackers?

Hacking without being caught :D something Chinese need to learn.

well,if you are "NOOB"(which means not professional),it's easier to get detected and get traced their IP.i read an article few years(over 3 years) back that how a chinese hackers landed into the trap of an Australian professional who laid a trap to check that is it really that Chinese hackers are roaming the cyberspace.he traced his IP and it was somewhere near Hainan,he said.surprisingly, only recently,American newspaper posted a pic of a building which they were claiming is the headquarter(or somewhat like it) of the cyber warfare dept of China in the very same region..tell me,how many agencies got detected in the same way??almost every country has cyber warfare agencies.. there are other similar kind of example too, just like a hacker hacked some USA's site and then opened his FB account(FB is banned in China for civilians) using the same ip.how much noobgiri is that??newspapers all over the world published their id. there are no denying the fact is that Chinese hackers doing some notorious job, which we call hacking spree to gather both technological and business knowledge, but they still gets detected most of the time and get blamed.of course, you don't expect anything will be done by china against those hackers as they are govt funded.but in other countries,it's a serious lapse that compromises defence policies by letting the enemy know what that hackers were looking for and which country they belong.
