What's new

India has tech for nuclear warships

Of course, when our Indian brothers do good we are also proud. This is a delicate time, if we do it right (i.e. work together) a Asian Century will shed light on the world. If we fight amongst ourselves, it will weaken all of us for the Lion's kill. :agree:

please SinoIndusFriendship,you are "热脸贴人家的冷屁股"ing

Technological development is necessary, but less should be spent on military and more to improve the quality of life of average citizens. When 40% of Indians earn $1 or less, I cannot really praise when that country wastes money on nuclear armaments. It does not bring prestige to India. In Bengali we say Gariber Ghora Rog or a poor man's indulgence in horse racing.

I think the latest feat by India will start a dangerous arms race in the Sub-continent.

arms race with who???...If somebody wanna join an armsrace with India, then all i can say is what u just said...."Gariber Ghora Rog", atleast we can afford an arms race!

Why, what's the use of powering them with nuclear power?

It's good that we improved our capablities that far, but that doesn't mean we have to put that tech in all new ships, without thinking about the high costs!
The only vessels that really need such a powerplant are SSBNs, bigger carriers and maybe battle cruiser. But as far as I know bigger carriers will not come before 2020 and do we need battle cruisers?
I agree with toxic_pus, it's more important to use such techs in the civil field, than for carriers and cruiser!

Dude its not just another ship in a shipyard...its an aircraft carrier, need lots of energy and will be hungry all the time. Like the plus point of every other nuclear powered carrier, it would be able to stay at ocean for a long time and such a capability is a must for an ambitious blue water navy.

Good.

Thanks for the info. I have read reports of Coal, Hydro & Natural Gas in India and i still don't think we will be using Nuclear Power Plants in the scale which is being REPORTED.

And from what i read - India has LIMITED uranium resources which are of low grade ore. So that makes me think most of the Fuel which we are going to import will be used for Military.

You seem correct. India has abundant Plutonium, not uranium. Also those reported numbers are inflated for mass consumption. India would be better off developing her own Plutonium-based Nuclear power stations. That way they would stimulate local economy and be more independent from foreign suppliers!

^^^ I think we are abundant in Thorium than Plutonium. However a recent news reports that India will achieve uranium self-sufficiency by 2013.

India will achieve uranium self-sufficiency by 2013: Anil

India is expected to achieve self-sufficiency in uranium production to feed its existing nuclear power projects and proposed plants by 2013, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar said.

With the Jadugoda Uranium mill in Jharkhand expanded and the proposed expansion of Turamdih mill expected to be over next year, uranium production would go up.

Besides, exploration of uranium is underway at Tummalapalle in Andhra Pradesh and it is expected to go on stream by 2013, he told reporters here.

Kakodkar was here on the occasion of five years of the propellant reaction project at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research attaining criticality.

"We are also working to explore uranium at Gogi near Gulbarga in Karnataka," he said and expressed the hope that a proposed project at Meghalaya would also be cleared soon.

With the completion of proposed projects, the country would overcome shortage of uranium by 2013.

Stating that the existing reactors were of world class, Kakodkar said, "We will also put in continuous efforts to further improve their performance through our research and development team."

Centre had given approval, in principle, for setting up a 4X700 MW nuclear power reactor unit. "We want to quickly get (final) approval and start constructing these projects. There are also plans to set up another 4x700 MW power unit," he said but did not divulge details.

xebex, the report said by 2013 India will have sufficiency however it doesn't say how. Also exploration will go on stream by 2013 doesn't mean there's a discovery of uranium ore. Sounds like a 'feel good' article to me, no offence meant.

There is no need to put everything in Public.

Actually mines from Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Kerala will go into full production by 2013. You can find info on net.

Kalpakkam, Aug. 2: Inside a cavernous, 20-metre-tall, light greenish building at the nuclear complex in Kalpakkam lies the elder sibling of India’s “secret weapon”.

Here, 75km from Chennai, is located the prototype of the nuclear plant that powers the Indian Navy’s first indigenously built nuclear-powered submarine, the Arihant.

While the sleek, 112-metre submarine was revealed to the world last week amid fanfare, the media today got their first glimpse of the top-secret project code-named — deliberately and misleadingly — Plutonium Recyling Project (PRP) since no plutonium is involved in the process.

This is where the first step towards building the nuclear plant for an Indian Navy submarine began in the late 1990s. Inside the hall, the land-based template of the Airhant’s nuclear reactor had been running smoothly since September 2006, churning out crucial readings that helped refine, design and fabricate the Arihant’s enriched uranium power plant at distant Visakhapatnam.

“In PRP we have what we call the ‘half boat’ in which the inner chamber of the rear half of a nuclear submarine is anchored to the ground. From its pressurised belly the 80MW nuclear plant operates,” explained PRP director S. Basu.

“The entire propulsion plant with primary, secondary, electrical and propulsion systems is packed into the half boat — measuring 42 metres in length and eight metres in diameter — and forms the heart of the nuclear submarine that powers its journey.

The navy sent its personnel here to be trained to operate the nuclear plant.

“This project saw India indigenously develop its first ever compact pressurised water reactor,” said Bhabha Atomic Research Centre director S. Banerjee.

“Although smaller and lighter, the plant generates power quickly, so essential for a submarine’s fast pick-up and quick manoeuvrability. For this the plant uses light water and enriched uranium unlike our land-based reactors that use heavy water and non-enriched uranium.”

Anil Kakodkar, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, said the light-water reactor had proved to be a technology demonstrator and given India a new capability, the marine propulsion reactor technology, to produce nuclear-powered submarines.

“This will help us explore (the possibility of) using these compact reactors for generating power in remote areas,” he said.

Asked when the nuclear reactor would achieve its first criticality (operational capability), Kakodkar said that before that the vessel had to go through the sequence of harbour and sea acceptance tests that would test the plant’s stability during a submarine’s journey.

Rear Admiral Michael Moraes, Flag Officer Commanding of submarines, said that ideally, the navy required another 13 nuclear-powered submarines.

“Even for us, the Arihant is a novel experience and in spite of the slightly higher noise levels of nuclear submarines, (acoustic) dampening features continue to give these submarines the much needed stealth advantage that makes them an ultimate secret weapon,” he said.

Asked if he was waiting to take the first dive once the Arihant was commissioned, Moraes quipped: “I am dying to, and I hope it happens soon.”

you think another 13 nuclear submarines with make "McMahon"legal?
you don't know chinese........you should learn how to use your muscle as a big country, china will never behind india like we behind US 60 years ago, when you have 13 nuclear submarines ,china already have 40

i dont want to feed u but i think that IN would have decided that 13 will be enough to protect our interests in this region.just making sure we r superior in our waters.having less no of subs doesnt make us lag behind in tech.

i don't have have problem that IN protect her interests as long as it's legal, trust me ,india will never be enough to protect "McMahon"

no problem with this

Why why why do you keep feeding the chinese trolls.?

He has derailed this thread again and again and again.

Stop doing this to yourselfs dudes.

He keeps blabbing about Mcmohan line, when the topic was Nuclear Aircraft carrier. You must understand his mental state.
===

I will do my bit in bringing this thread back to topic.

I think out of the three aircraft carriers being built the last two will be nuclear.

What do you guys say.?

Its only a matter of time that the guys at kalpakkam make another Nuclear reactor to power it.Hope fully this time some where around 150MW reactor.
What do you think?
