India govt. adds 15,800 new MBBS seats with US$ 2billion

New Delhi: The Centre today cleared a proposal for increasing over 10,000 MBBS seats in government medical colleges across the country by upgrading them to help bring down the doctor-patient ratio. Of the Rs 10,000 crore proposal, the Centre would bear Rs 7,500 crore and state/Union Territory's share will be Rs 2,500 crore. Making more doctors.

Making more doctors. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in its meeting today approved the Rs 10,000 crore proposal of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for upgradation of existing state government/central government medical colleges to increase the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) seats. "This will result in the increase of about 10,000 seats at a total cost of Rs 10,000 crore, with a proposed central assistance share of Rs 7,500 crore and State/Union Territory share of Rs 2,500 crore," said a government release.

The funding pattern under the scheme will be 90:10 by Central and State Governments respectively for North Eastern states and special category states and in the ratio of 70:30 for other states.

The total cost of one MBBS seat is approximately Rs 1.20 crore. The proposal is aimed at increasing the number of doctors to help bring down the doctor-patient ratio from the current 1:2000 to 1:1000.

At present, there are around 50,000 MBBS seats across the country
and government is keen to increase them to address the issue of shortage of doctors. The government is aiming at increasing the MBBS seats across the country to increase doctors for helping reduce the disease burden and work in the unserved areas of the country, especially in the rural hinterland.

Last week, the government cleared a proposal of the health ministry to set up 58 new medical colleges in states with central assistance and upgradation of district hospitals, thus helping create 5,800 more MBBS seats.

The establishment of 58 new medical colleges by upgradation of existing district hospitals in deficient states will help increase the intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats in each medical college. Currently, a total of 381 medical colleges in the country with 49,918 MBBS seats registered with the apex medical regulator - the Medical Council of India.

1.) + siddha and Unani too.

Just look at the support of the chinese govt. to the chinese system of medicine and they are the back bone of china.

2.) Our elite research institutes meant for the cutting edge research and development are bogged down by the load of the patients. Just take AIIMS at New Delhi. about 80% of the cases that came to the AIIMS are of the general in nature which can be treat by the GP or local dispensary but people flock to the AIIMS due to its free of cost + reputation.

3.) Now, AIIMS have build a new building for referral and screening where their team of doctors will screen and only forward the serious patients to AIIMS for admissions.

4.) It will reduce the workload and the expenditure and AIIMS will spend its time and resources in research and development. To provide new and cheaper health solutions to the people of India.

This is one of few ( very few) good initiative by MMS.. Good Job..
