India doctors, 1 in 5 via management quota

Yes, as you mentioned corruption is one problem. Some times back head of MCI was caught taking bribe to increase some seats in some private colleges. What I want to say that to increase or give fresh recognition to new colleges the state govts. should also be given a free hand. We know it will increase the corruption. State health minister will take money to sanction new medical colleges. But there should also be mechanism to check the quality. And we will get more MBBS doctors. I come from middle class. Middle class do not mind spending 15-20 lakhs for 5 year course. But more that that is difficult for them.

As I told before more the doctors, the more doctors will go to rural area automatically because of competition in cities. After all doctor earn his degree to earn and make living.

Increasing seats is a option but certain steps also should taken neither this move also fail miserably. If you only increased seats then it will be less competition then it would result in falling education quality which already declined day by day.
Competition didn't bent doctors to go in rural areas because lack of basic infrastructure in those areas.

So, we need certain steps to tackle this problem.

1. Improve basic infrastructure in rural areas.
2. Promote more players in medical education field which automatically increase seats & competition.
3. Promote & professionalise traditional treatment methods like Ayurveda, Yellowpathy.
4. Give autonomy & power to education regulatory body.
5. It should be necessary to practice in rural areas for minimum 6 month to grant a licence.

Increase in Medical seats in Government sector has been very slow. There is also some vested interest in creating a shortage so private colleges find takers. The problem is abysmal standard of Doctors coming out of the private colleges.

The Government sector has a lot of clinical material but little money while the private sector has money but few patients to teach its students. A new college may take at least 500-6-- crores to build.

There is some hope of seat increase in near future:

1. MCI is going to dilute the bed-student ratio so that maximum intake can be made 250 instead of the present 150.

2. Some talk of converting District Hospitals to Mini colleges but this may take time.

3. Bachelor of Rural Medicine to be started for meeting shortage of doctors in rural areas.

The private sector route is not the way to go, in my opinion.

Point No.3 is a very good Idea. Also Post No.14. But some body please put this into political parties head. Can't they put these in to their poll promises?

Thats right. Breaking medical cartel is the key of holding medical expenses down. It is better for the poor to get doctors with basic medical training than to get no doctor at all. The rich can go to doctors with fancy oversea medical school degree. The poor can get immense improvement in access to healthcare by flooding market with doctors.

I applaud India.

But we have vested interest here. Starting from politicians to few blessed(greedy with good hand)) doctors (not all doctors) make money due to shortage. This shortage is artificial and man made. If your last sentence become true the money making industry will be hampered. I have seen poor people coming from villages form small diseases and these hospitals in cities milk them in the name of different costly tests. They get cured is another thing but they loose substantial amount of money for small fever like things which could have been attended by rural doctors.

Making it compulsory to serve in rural areas has not been effective in my state. My state has got a clause that if you do not practice in rural area you can give a fine of Rs.5,00,000/-. Students happily pay that amount and go away. Yes point No. 1,2,4 are good idea. Doctors who also want to serve rural also have their hands ties as the medical infrastructure in rural is non-existent. If some body dies the villagers some times beat the doctor out of anger, but then what the doctor can do without necessary equipment and medicine?

Thats why I am saying that its make necessary to licence without penalty clause to practice in rural areas. In my village government build a very good hospital worth Rs. 5 crore today it has only doctor instead of required 17 specialist doctors.

but these mother effers have given all the seats to f@cking st/sc's.

my cousin is very intelligent.he passed the pmt exam and got admitted into a reputed college whose rank is always in top ten medical colleges of india.

but now he can't do empty because all the seats are given to st/sc by these f@ckin politicians.5 to 8 thousands general caste have to compete for just 10 seats :hitwall:

my own sis is waiting for medical councelling , she got a rank 2400 change but she cant get mbbs seat as the rank ends at 2200 for oc students while that of sc/st s is somewhere b/w 8000-9000 :( :hitwall::frown:
