Indications have emerged that India and France are in talks for 36 more Rafale fighter jets, in addition to the 36 contracted in 2016, for a total order of 72 aircraft. It has also emerged that while the French government was hoping for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allude to those talks during President Emmanual Macron’s ongoing visit to India, that may not happen in the current circumstances.

In a letter to Indian defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman twelve days ago on Feb 26, French defence minister Florence Parly has said it would be ‘particularly appreciated’ by her government if the Indian government revealed during President Macron’s visit that the two governments were in discussions for an additional 36 Rafale jets for the Indian Air Force. Parly also refers to a letter written by President Macron to Prime Minster Modi on October 25 last year requesting that discussions be initiated on France’s proposal to provide 36 more Rafales ‘with a very significant share of Make in India’.

President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Modi today presided over the signing of 14 agreements across sectors. As part of the strategic relationship, the two defence ministers signed a reciprocal logistics support agreement that would ‘facilitate the reciprocal provision of Logistic Support, Supplies and Services between the Armed Forces of the two countries during authorised port visits, joint exercises, joint training, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts etc’, according to an India’s External Affairs Ministry statement...................

Why do you still want to procure more 4th gen aircraft? Why not focus on 5th gen?

5th Generation fighters cost 3 times more per hour to operate

They are luxury force multipler.

For every sortie a F35 makes the RAFALE makes 3 sorties

To win a war you need lots of 4th generation fighters ie 80% of the IAF needs to be high end 4th generation fighters

Rafale
Mirage2000
Su30mki
Tejas

Some 500+ planes

THEN we ADD some luxury 5th generation later ie F35 or SU57 ie 60-80 planes

You guys have a decent 4th gen fleet, and you're already making your own 4th gen fighter (Tejas). Why not just focus on 5th gen for now or buy more of the platforms you already have, rather than making new acquisitions?

5th gen is the future.

Except mki we don't have any gen4 fighter

Did you forget about MiG-29, Mirage-2000 and LCA Tejas? Not to mention a lot of your 3rd gen aircraft are upgraded to the point at which they are just as potent.

You guys should focus on 5th gen when it comes to buying more planes, and just make more LCA's at home.

Mig29,mirage2000s aren't gen 4 when we purchased, but yeah they are being upgraded .

Uhh yes they are.

Actually 4th gen is a very generic term and many aircrafts can qualify for this designation. But Rafale is arguably the best 4th aircraft at present and keep upgrading. It's even can be classified a 5th gen aircraft except of stealth.

Stealth is kinda what makes 5th gen 5th gen lol.

India have huge amount of money so they can buy.i think India considers France as a reliable partner and I think iaf likes Rafale but there must be a project to make fighter jets under make in India.make in India is sidelined.

Frankly, we don't have a 5th gen fighter in line as of now. FGFA maybe scrapped looking at the recent developments and even if we go for the F-35, we would be last in line and dealing with Americans comes with a lot of strings attached. Moreover, Su-30MKI is a heavy fighter and we need a medium fighter to fill in the gap between the MKI's and LCA's.

I hope MoD allocates more funds to fastrack the development of AMCA while pruchasing 36 more Rafales making them the last import ever for IAF
