War drums are being beaten at their loudest in New Delhi. Apparently, someone is trying to make efforts to push two nuclear-armed adversaries to the edge of a deadly war. And the source of renewed tension lies somewhere at the Line of Control (LOC,) the border between India and Pakistan dividing the disputed area of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The pressure has been so intense that Indian administration was forced to switch its stance on the issue of killing five Indian soldiers in Poonch sector. These soldiers were reportedly killed through ambush laid half a kilometer inside the India-held territory.
The official stance of Indian government presented in the parliament was clear; terrorists in Pakistan Armys uniform did it. This stance was in sharp contrast of the statement of Indian Army who had blamed Pakistan for this incident but subsequently corrected its statement. Indian Army Chief, Bikram Singh, was asked to visit the area and submit the report but he could not reach there due to inclement weather.
There was a mob attack on Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi and opposition parties, BJP and its extremist associate, are demanding suspension of peace talk and attacking Pakistan. Pakistan Army and Foreign Office have vehemently denied occurrence of any such incident. Pakistans prime minister, who also holds the portfolios of defense and foreign affairs, is in Saudi Arabia on a private visit to perform end-of Ramadan pilgrimage.
Only in the last week, four civilians were killed, who according to Pakistan strayed into Indian side of LOC but Indian hold that they were terrorists. The Indian authorities claimed to recover from them one AK-47 and a hunters gun from them which shows that they were not terrorists because terrorists are not equipped with such kind of arms.
It seems that politicians from both the sides are trying their best to save the situation. That is the reason that there was no provocative statement from either side. But Indian opposition and establishment are trying gain political mileage for BJP because it is election time and only those parties can ensure a win who play on anti-Pakistan rhetoric. The Indian media, corporate media, is fanning the flames of the conflict for their commercial reasons; the higher rating. Will the Indian government fall prey to pressure being built by extremists is something which only the time will tell.
