30 Bangladeshis return after serving jail term in India

DHAKA: Thirty Bangladeshis returned home through the Jakiganj border in Sylhet on Thursday (July 26) after languishing in Indian jail ranging from two to 23 years.
Additional police superintendent of Karimganj in Indian state of Assam, Devajit Nath, and police inspector Wakil Ahmad handed over them to Jakiganj Land Port’s immigration officer Rafiqul Islam and Jakiganj Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman.
After the transfer process, the police handed over them to their relatives. Many got tearful when they got to their dear ones.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Jakiganj Circle) Sudipta Roy told reporters that Bangladeshis who repatriated from India have been served jail terms ranging from 2 to 23 years.
He said many of them have long been sentenced for not knowing the exact identity of the detainees. Later, the process of repatriation has begun after confirmation of their identities through the Indian High Commission.
Of the 30 Bangladeshis who have returned, four from Comilla, two each from Sylhet, Cox's Bazar, Natore, Faridpur, Kurigram Netrokona, Panchagarh and Chuadanga, while One each from Bogra, Brahmanbaria, Pabna, Satkhira, Chandpur, Mymensingh, Khagrachari, Jamalpur, Dinajpur and Khulna.
