The induction of the aircraft carrier Gorshkov/Vikramaditya has been delayed due to requirement of additional works and change in the scope of trials.

The additional works will increase the service life of the aircraft carrier significantly. The delivery of the aircraft carrier has been rescheduled for December 2012.

The procurement of modern weapon systems is undertaken as per the approved requirements of the Armed Forces in terms of capabilities sought and time frame prescribed, from various indigenous as well as foreign sources, including Russia, in accordance with the Defence Procurement Procedure.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri Shyamal Chakraborty in Rajya Sabha today.

Hi, regardless of this delay, this ship will be a very potent addition to the Indian Navy. It will have a compliment of Mig-29K navalized planes and anti-sub helicopters. It will be a very impressive ship once delivered. Thanks!

That's only if it's delivered sometime this century. How many delays??:hitwall::hitwall:

I'm sick and tired of the IM's indecisiveness. These incompetent fools have caused delays in nearly all of our indigenous programs and foreign acquisitions. I don't understand why they can't stick to a certain set of specifications and actually INDUCT a freaking platform before looking for upgrades.

The LCA was revised, revised and then revised some more before the IAF was pressured into inducting it. We had a similar experience with the Arjun, and now, with our sole aircraft carrier ready to keel over and die, these guys aren't satisfied with the existing delay so they figured they'd wait another year or two before we can induct the Gorshkov. I can't think of a single program that was completed/acquired on schedule.

We really need to fire Anthony and bring in someone responsible.

Hi Mr. Abishek, I am in the San Francisco Bay area. Yes, I understand it is frustrating with all these delays, but remember you are dealing with the Russians. India does not want to be in the position that Algeria was, in which it was forced to return its Mig-29SMTs due to shoddy construction. This aircraft carrier is going under a major refit. It was brought out of dry dock, gutted of its old systmes, new systems added, new propulsion systems added, and then had its flight deck elongated. This takes a lot of work, time and money.

Look at other programs, the JSF is 3 years behind, the Dreamliner is 3 years behind, and the A380 was 3+ years behind. All of these programs were overbudget also and were handled by heavy weights like Lockheed-Martin, Boeing and Airbus.

In addition, what other choice does India currently have? India is developing its own aircraft carrier, and it will succeed in that, but it will take time. British aircraft carriers are too small and can only handle Harrier jets, French aircraft carriers are way to expensive, and the US will never sell that type of ship to anyone. Take care.
