স্বাধীনতার এত বছর পরেও ভারত-বাংলাদেশ সীমান্ত এলাকায় জমি ছাড়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হল। কয়েকদিন আগেই জমি জরিপের কাজ শেষ হয়েছে।

দুই দেশের সম্প্রীতি বজায় রাখতে ভারতের দখলে থাকা পাঙ্গা নদীর দেড় কিমি এলাকা বাংলাদেশকে ছেড়ে দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে বলে খবর। চলতি মাসের প্রথম সপ্তাহেই দুই দেশের প্রতিনিধিদের উপস্থিতিতে জমি জরিপের কাজ শেষ হয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন দক্ষিণ বেরুবাড়ির প্রাক্তন পঞ্চায়েত প্রধান তথা দক্ষিণ বেরুবাড়ি প্রতিরক্ষা কমিটির নেতা সারদাপ্রসাদ দাস।
দেশ ভাগের পরেও দুই দেশের মধ্যে জমি নিয়ে অনেক জটিলতা ছিল। ছিটমহলের মতো অনেক সমস্যার সমাধান সম্প্রতি হয়েছে। কিন্তু ভারত-বাংলাদেশ সীমান্ত দিয়ে বয়ে চলা পাঙ্গা নদীর একটা বড় এলাকা নিয়ে জটিলতা থেকে গিয়েছিল। এবার সেই এলাকাটুকুও ভারতের পক্ষে ছেড়ে দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে।
দক্ষিণ বেরুবাড়ি প্রতিরক্ষা কমিটির পক্ষে সারদাপ্রসাদ দাস জানিয়েছেন, ‘‘জলপাইগুড়ি জেলার এই ভারতীয় এলাকার পাশাপাশি সংলগ্ন বাংলাদেশের ভেতর দিয়েও যমুনা ও পাঙ্গা নদী গিয়েছে। দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই এই দুই নদীর ভারতীয় ভৌগোলিক সীমার মধ্যে থাকা কিছু অংশের দাবি জানিয়ে আসছে বাংলাদেশ। আর তা নিয়ে সমস্যা চলছিল। অবশেষে তার সমাধান হল।’’
জানা গিয়েছে, দক্ষিণ বেরুবাড়ি পঞ্চায়েতের নতুন বস্তির হেকেনা পাড়া থেকে ছয় ঘড়িয়ার মধ্যে প্রবাহিত পাঙ্গা নদীর ৩ কিমি জমির মালিকানা চেয়েছিল ভারত, অপরদিকে ছয় ঘড়িয়া থেকে ফকিরাপাড়া পর্যন্ত যমুনা নদীর দেড় কিমি এলাকাও নিজেদের দখলে রাখার পক্ষেই দাবি রেখেছিল ভারত। সারদাপ্রসাদবাবু বলেন, ‘‘ইতিমধ্যে বেশকিছু ভারতীয় জমি আলোচনার মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশের অধীনে চলে গিয়েছে। তাই নতুন করে যাতে নদীর এলাকা দখল হয়ে না যায় তার জন্যই এই দাবি তোলা হয়েছিল। স্থল-সীমান্ত চুক্তি অনুযায়ী দক্ষিণ বেরুবাড়ির যমুনা নদীর ভৌগোলিক দখল ৩ কিমি নদীর এলাকা ভারত নিজের দখলে রাখতে পেরেছে। অন্যদিকে পাঙ্গা নদীর দেড় কিমি বাংলাদেশকে ছেড়ে দিতে হচ্ছে।’’
