NATIONAL RECORD: India all set to register highest voter turnout ever! - daily.bhaskar.com

New Delhi: India is all set to register a record breaking voter turnout this election season, surpassing the previous record in 1984, as 66.27 per cent voting has been reported in 502 Lok Sabha seats where polling has been conducted this time.
With a potential 6.61 crore people still left to vote for the 41 parliamentary constituencies that will poll on Monday, Indian voters look set to beat the highest ever turnout of 64.01 per cent that was recorded in the eighth Lok Sabha election of 1984-85. In the aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s assassination, as many as 25.62 crore voters out of a total 40.03 crore had voted in those Lok Sabha polls.
From the remaining 6.61 crore of the 83.05-crore-strong electorate, a turnout just exceeding 2.5 0 crore, or around 38 per cent, will take the overall turnout past the 1984-85 record.
Election Commission’s director general Akshay Rout stated, “As of now, we are already two percentage points higher than the highest turnout the country has ever seen. May 12 could end up smashing that record.”
For May 12, the electorate is 3.16 crore voters in Uttar Pradesh for 18 seats, 2.56 crore in West Bengal for 17 seats, and over 88 lakh for six Bihar seats.
All the EC is hoping for is for the current voter upsurge to continue on May 12. But given the heat-wave that has gripped parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, there is a fear that a poor show on Monday could pull down the cumulative turnout rate.
As per data compiled till now, of the 32 states and union territories where polls have been completed, as many as 30 have recorded a turnout that is higher than it was in the 2009 general elections. In fact, 17 of these 32 states and union territories have recorded their highest voter turnouts ever.
While smaller states such as Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa and union territories such as Lakshadweep, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Puducherry, Daman & Diu, Chandigarh were expected to have high voter turnouts in any case, it is larger states such as Orissa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Rajasthan where the turnouts have been unprecedented.
Turnout of women voters also recorded highest figure ever as they outnumbered men in 13 states this time.

Voting in Andhra Pradesh is highest ever at 73.46 per cent as against 72.63 per cent in the last elections. Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed higher voting with 49.96 per cent polling this time as against 39.68 per cent last time.Voting in Himachal Pradesh was 66.5 per cent as against 53.7 per cent last time. In Uttarakhand, polling was 62 per cent as against 53.68 per cent last time.Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Punjab and Meghalaya witnessed higher turnout of women than men.
During the 2009 polls, 41.72 crore voters of a total 71.69 crore had voted for a turnout of 58.19 per cent. During the last three Lok Sabha Elections, voter turnouts had failed to touch even 60 per cent. After the 1984-85 record was set, the highest voter turnout witnessed in the country was 61.97 per cent for the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998.

This simply shows the Demographic Dividend in India has RISEN.

They voted for Development over other useless issues.

The young and old, rich and poor , educated and illiterates , ruralites and urbanites ...all have come out of their shells ....and have done their due by casting ballot .

This election will prove historic in many sense ....for India and perhaps also for the region ...

When more people votes, it generally goes against the incumbent. That means people are not happy and they want a change.

what about contrary version that Modi factor has brought out polarization ..and there may have been negative voting ...against Modi ....?

Well i am not following election news,Can anyone kindly tell me about predictions??

Possible but seems unlikely. I don't have data to back it up, but according to my understanding the minorities used to vote in numbers even in the past. It was the majority who used to remain indifferent. This time that has changed.

Not necessarily, since you also have to factor in that India is still an emerging country, where people can't cast their vote as easily as people in the west or in far smaller democratic countries. So the higher outcome can also be a result of improvements of the infrastructure and procedures to vote. Also a factor should be Indias larger number of youth that should be interested in getting more involved, it's definitely a good sign for democracy.
Last week I saw a report about officials from African countries, visiting India to see how the election procedures works and especially interested in the voting machines / systems, that were said to be simple and cost-effective and could be exported to these countries. Once again a great show of not only industrial achievements, but that India is seen in the world as a leading democracy!

I don't think most people have to travel far to cast their vote and the infrastructure hasn't changed so much in those remote areas in the last five years that it would jump by 7%. The simple reason is that people are more enthusiastic this time.

Good sign!!

Waiting for Modi to take up the PM's chair. It's not a Modi wave but Modi Tsunami everywhere.

A good sign for democracy and means who ever comes to power will truly be what the people want and will thus have a mandate.

Well it's a very good sign for democracy ...But not sure if we will have clear mandate this time ...

seems India is heading for hung parliament once again ...although NDA will most likely manage to cobble up the numbers eventually ...
