DHAKA: Local government minister Syed Ashraful Islam Saturday said China would be a major business partner of Bangladesh in near future.
"The road link and rail communications network from Kunming of China to Bangladesh will establish new economic relations with the South Asian countries," he said while speaking at a discussion at a city hotel on the occasion of the 63rd founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
The minister stressed the need for strengthening connectivity with neighbouring countries for economic development and changing the people's fate.
Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal (ML) organised the programme with party's general secretary and industries minister Dilip Barua in the chair. Information minister Hasanul Haque Inu and China envoy in Dhaka Li Jun attended the it as the special guests.
Syed Ashraf, also Awami League general secretary, said the progress of Bangladesh in the economic, political and social sectors depends on friendly and effective relation with India and China, the two emerging super powers of the world.
Information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Haque Inu said the policy of engagement and dialogue could be pursued to remove tension worldwide.
"China's experience in this field would bring positive results for Bangladesh," he added.
Industries minister Dilip Barua recalled the contribution of China to the country's socio-economic development.
He termed China as a 'world role model' in the field of economic development.
Among others, Prime Minister's foreign affairs adviser Dr Gawhar Rizvi, general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim, Awami League labour affairs secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj, general secretary of Bangladesher Workers Party Anisur Rahman Mollik, general secretary of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) Khaliquzzaman Bhuiyan, Ganotantri Party general secretary Nurur Rahman Selim and convener of Gano Forum Pankaj Bhatyachariya attended the function.

Bangladesh's export to China was $320 million in fiscal 2011-12, but import was an overwhelming $5.9 billion. Now you should know who is benefited from this business partnership.
Major imports from china includes expensive capital industrial machinery.All electronic products are chinese including Nokia, samsung, Sony, panasonic etc. Our whole private sector and major part of the public sector uses machines from China, Japan, germany and other EU states. While our import from India include agricultural goods and some automobile junk.For eg motorcycle import from India equates to a miniscule 300million $$.While your passenger cars don't even stand a chance here. Our agricultural productivity is pathetically low and requires farmed Indian products . Btw most of those goods come via smuggling thanks to your BSF robbing our state of precious tariffs. SO don't come here comparing BD-chinese trade relation with that of your bharat mata. Our trade imbalance with china will always be there which is not at all harming us to that extent and chinese have already taken steps to increase the imports from BD so as to reduce the imbalance just like a true friend does. China is an irreplaceable development partner and an ally of BD.
Do not be misguided by ignorant non-Bangladeshis. Read to know what is a polder, and someday you will find BoB will send us not water, but oil and gas. We will build many polders Holland style to neutralize any rise of sea level. Soil is more available than we need to build the sea dykes.
Go and visit many points in Padma in December/January after the recession of current flood water. You will see more soil/silt in the Chors (shoals) than we can use. Even the island country Maldives want to buy our Padma silts to raise the level of its island. When we use up the current soil more soil will be flushed in in every monsoon.

So, keep courage, BD will not be inundated not even after a million years.
