India bans import of Laptops, Tablets and Personal Computers with immediate effect

people fundamentally misunderstand how china built up its manufacturing

if it was due to protectionism then mao china and north korea would be manufacturing powerhouses

all areas that the chinese are strong in is due to openess

all areas they are still weak in is due to protectionism

the only way to build up an economy is through openness, that’s what an economy fundamentally is, trading, let the free market do its thing

All of China’s strengths are not open, or are not allowed to be opened by the United States. For example, China’s aerospace technology, the United States does not allow China to participate in international exchanges, and also specifically prohibits it by legislation. China’s aerospace technology is now one of the most advanced.

China’s open industry is computer or chip manufacturing. China has actually formed a vested interest group in the economic division of labor set by the United States. For example, China’s Lenovo has almost no practical research and development in science and technology. It is an assembler of computer accessories. I can do all of Lenovo's technology industries by myself, buy computer accessories and assemble them into a personal computer.

China used to have its own computer operating system, which was completely open to foreign countries. Microsoft took advantage of China's opening up and piracy to kill China's operating system.

There is a balance that is required between protectionism and openness. Too much openness and your nascent domestic industry will be immediately killed. Its like putting a newborn child in front of vultures and let it fight it out and hope it survives. You need to have protectionism until the industry grows to a certain point and then open up the economy.

In this case, its a stupid decision not because of protectionism but because it was implemented in haste without consulting stakeholders, also continuously changing laws deter foreign investors. If they had made it clear to foreign companies that they intend to implement this kind of law before they made their investments then it would be fine, but now several companies like apple have already made their investment and now finding out they can no longer sell macbooks…they will feel they are being blackmailed/cheated and foreign companies will think a hundred times before entering india.

yet india can launch rockets but can’t manufacture worth a shit

I am sure they can make laptops. It is just making at consumer grade quality at the price points.
The last time I checked there were no restrictions on sales of laptops. Why waste energy making something that is freely available ?

On the other hand rocket technology is still restricted in terms of availability

It is the RIGHT DECISION . The Indian electronic ecosystem has reached the point where PC, Laptops and tablets can be manufactured by a number of companies.
Component import is not restricted only the finished product.
I have made my own PC since the 1990's .
It does not take great technical achievement to put the components together to make these low level products.
Any competent assembler can easily manage that.
What are the odd this will be mostly assemble work with only a certain percentage of the east stuff made by these companies looking to get the Made in India stamp by the government.

Is the make a quick buck mentally, maintain high margins from the get go, invest very little in the work force and factory, also very strong in Indian companies? (Genuine question)

This might not be a field Indians companies can be competitive in without some carve out in foreign markets that gives them preferential access over Chinese manufacturers. Foreign sales are what are needed to subsidize the building up of efficiencies and then local market share and pushing out Chinese competitors. Any indication this is the plan?

Never really understood the obsession of this prajati with us

Export markets are down everywhere

Lol, what's your point? Or are you suggesting India would increase its share in global merchandise trade by imposing a ban on imports?

Productivity of Indian labors is extremely low. India is just not competitive in manufacturing period. Neither is India part of RCEP which means you'll be cut off from the Asian supply chain in due time.

The only way India could gain some sort of global influence is by opening your domestic market to other countries but now your chaiwala pm has even closed that door.

Looks like your leaders also know India's actual place as a perennial third rate middle power despite whatever you people are fed by your godi media.
