India approves plan to develop Iran's Chabahar port

Ignoratio elenchi!
Nothing has happened all of a sudden.Afaik this trilateral partenership is concerned then it was agreed upon in 2013 when congress was still in power. It was speculated that India hastened this because of China's decision to develop Gwadar port in Pakistan.
And this trilateral partnership would also help reduce land locked Afghan's dependence on Pakistan.
But I'm still wondering why would India develop a port which is so close to Pakistan??
This port Chabahar can be attacked easily by the enemies.

Let me bring one thing to your notice. Chah Bahar is an Iranian port; not an Indian port; regardless of India's role in developing it. Secondly, India will not have a Naval base there, since India does not need one there, neither will Iran allow any country to set up a Naval Base in its territory, let there be no misconception regarding these matters. If Pakistan attacks Chah Bahar, then it will simply be an attack on Iran and therefore an 'Act of War' on Iran.

Likewise, there is some absurd extrapolation that Gwadar will become a Chinese Naval Base. If that becomes so then it will firstly raise issues about Pakistani Sovereignty; secondly it will still remain a target in case of Indo-pak hostilities.
Thus both Chah Bahar and Gwadar will always be Iranian and pakistani ports respectively.

Good news..... Goi should work fast on implementing this and try to finish this project ASAP........
I think the project should be a prolonged one instead...

if china attack on that port mean WAR with IRAN... If India attack on Gwadar port means war with PAK and not china....

Nothing left to proof on India & Iran relationship, Iran was never Pakistan's friend & people now need to understand that & stop saying crap. Iran can never be trusted.

If you look into history of military pacts the facts will prove you wrong. Iran came to your help during the 1965 conflict.

I have already explained in the past as to how Chabahar can cannot compete with gwadar in trade output as both Afghanistan and few central asian states trade through chabahar even by 2060 won't be more than 10Billion dollars.

And tomorrow if kashmir problem is solved,India will jump into pakistan for trade with afghanistan and central asian through afghanistan via pakistan

Iran plans to turn its southeastern Chabahar Port into a trade hub in the near future, an Iranian official says.

At a meeting with Indian Ambassador to Tehran Shri Niraj Srivastava, Head of Iran's Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Gholam Hossein Shafe'ee pointed to Iran’s development plans for Chabahar Port and said those investing in the area will have a secure and promising prospect.

Shafe'ee pointed to Iran’s emphasis on the rail transport system, adding that the country plans to connect Mashhad rail road in northeastern Iran to the western Afghan province of Herat and launch development projects in Sarakhs special economic zone in northeastern Iran.

Srivastava, for his part, described Chabahar Port as a key location for the promotion of Iran-India trade and said New Delhi seeks to participate in development of the area.

The diplomat said that India has allocated USD 300 million to invest in development of Chabahar Port and the country plans to take part in development of rail roads from the area and shipping lines in the next steps.

Iran’s Chabahar Port, located 72 kilometers (44 miles) west of Pakistan’s Gwadar port, holds immense strategic and economic significance for India.

The port is already connected to the city of Zaranj in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Nimruz and can serve as India’s entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.

The simple fact of the matter is that Chah Bahar is not only important for Afghanistan's connectivity; but even more so for Iran. Chah Bahar will help Iran to become a Gateway to CARs.
But most of all: Chah Bahar is valuable to Iran as a entrepot free of the Hormuz Straits bottleneck, immune to any Iran/GCC/KSA tensions which tend to erupt now and then.

Chabahar will provide an alternate route to Afghanistan and Central Asia with India and Indian ocean. Strategically this will help India and Afghanistan as Pakistan is hostile with both. Central Asia's business with India is restricted due to Pakistan coming in between and Chabahar will help the business grow multifold. Iran being the host country will also benefit. Similarly India is developing Sittwe Port in Myanmar to reduce dependence on Bangladesh for supplies to north east region. Both Sittwe and Chabahar will help Indian business more hence India is pursuing the development of these ports.
Linking these ports with naval base is meaningless as these areas fall well within Indian Naval Strike Zone. Indian Navy's warships keep scanning entire Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. There is no new requirement of a naval base in the region.

New Iranian port to hurt Gwadar port's prospects

ISLAMABAD: The development of an Iranian port in Chabahar would affect the Gwadar Port's role as the main sea route from the Central Asian Republics (CARs), Pakistani embassy in Dushanbe has informed Islamabad.

Pakistan has been told that Iran is vigorously pursuing the Chabahar Port with India's assistance, to monopolise trade from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, intended for the Gulf and the East.

According to documents dispatched to the Foreign Office by the Pakistan embassy in Dushanbe, which were later sent to the Ministry of Communication, almost the entire trade activity from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan intended for the Gulf and the East would be routed through Chabahar instead of Gwadar if the Iranian port materialised.

"Pakistan is pinning high hopes on the Gwadar project as the transit point for goods from Russia and the CARs bound for the Gulf and the East, but the Chabahar Port would inflict a huge financial setback to Pakistan," sources in the Communication Ministry told Daily Times.

They said the construction of third phase of Iran-Afghanistan Transit Highway has also begun near Zabul border post on July 14, 2003. The phase includes construction of 15km of highway, which would connect Zabul's Zahak district to the border post and onwards to the Silk Bridge being constructed over Parian river. The river serves as the border between Iran and Afghanistan.

The estimated cost of the project's third phase is 43 billion Iranian riyals and it is likely to be completed by March 2004.

Sources said the highway's earlier phases, joining Chabahar to Zabul and Zahak, have already been completed.

"Sixty percent construction work on the Silk Bridge has been completed. The bridge is aimed at facilitating the export of goods from Iran to Afghanistan and onwards to the CARs," sources added. The documents also reveal that Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan have recently inked a trilateral agreement for the Anzob Tunnel project. Tehran has also approved a $10 million grant for Tajikistan to complete the project. The tunnel would provide safe and uninterrupted road access to Chabahar port from Tajikistan.

According to the documents, Iran has also decided to extend $21 million credit to Tajikistan for developing its transportation and road sector.

The documents say the main hurdle in the highway's completion is the bridge on the river Panj at Bandar Sher Khan on the Tajik-Afghan border. Interestingly, the US government is financing $12 million for the construction of the bridge.

IF you ever will wake from your wet dreams then you will realise that Gwadar simply does not have the capability to compete with Gwadar since no Central Asian nation in his right mind would use infrastructure in pakistan for accesing Gwadar whereas no such problem exists with Chabhar.
Add to that it will give Afghanistan means to stand in it own feet and give effective reply to bullying by Pakistan.

Adding to my earlier post, there is a proposed North south economic corridor which invoves Russia,Iran and Central Asian nations. The interest taken by CAR's alone tell us that regional countries want to use which port.

Secondly Xinjian region of China will only use Gwadar port which is a relatively poor region so all your dreams of billion and trillion dollars of trade will remain dream only.
