If India goes for JUST single seater plane then we can get the plane early as RuAF requirement is very low

Requirement for the Russian airforce is low right now because they would firstly test the plane out before they order in larger numbers. But after that is done you could see the numbers grow exponentially. Or they might just be working on another version.

On the other hand this deal would show that India and Russia are still major ally and Russia is still a major defense partner of India and is far ahead of US in terms of defense equipment supply.

This was precisely the Russian mindset when the Americans blew the Russian thinking through their back-wall when it introduced the F-117 A. I would say, if the current generation SAMs can still detect the Nighthawk, then it is a quantum leap for SAM systems to have achieved it. It would be beneficial to us with that strategy IF the planners thought like you do.

Well in my opinion one should understand that two countries with vastly different economic strengths must not compete as it unnecessarily creates economic strain. Asking PAkistan to counter India's acquisition plans does not make economic sense. Its like saying that India must prepare to counter-balance US. Lets try to be a little realistic here. India's defence budget will be around 120 billion or so by 2022. Pakistan must not think on counterbalancing India. Its like Canada/Mexico asking to compete with US.

I am a hedge fund portfolio manager, and everyone in my group has this long-term stance that India's quest to build its own private defence industry is the carte blance that will forever end the topic of Indo-Pak arms race unless Pakistan sincerely strives to develop the same. (Just an opinion of few folks on the Wall Street.)

Rivers of know-how to flow between India and Russia. The question is whether we can absorb given the quantum of know-how.

It would be better for India to involve a couple of private players like L&T, Mahindra and TATA to counter HAL's inertia. We need to wake up the public sector employees from their slumber and get them going with renewed energy.

little delay in FGFA/PAK FA to get the most capable one, was very much expected. we were getting too many news in Australia to buy more Super Hornets to fill the gap as even IOC of US's 5th gen aircraft F35/JSF is also delayed till at least 2018.....

while its still not performing as expected by the Australian defense experts, its professionals are likely to go back to even design stage to fix the problems they have on the final stage of F35/JSF.......

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program has some negative issues that must be watched in the coming years.

Other signs of ill-health with the F-35 program are that the U.S. Navy is buying more Super Hornets to fill gaps in their carrier air wings. The United States Air Force (USAF) is in a similar state of affairs. For them the F-35 program is 7 years late compared to the 2001 plan. Initial Operating Capability (IOC) for USAF IOC's has been pushed to 2018. USAF now plans to refurbish 350 F-16s to deal with broken promises by the F-35 program.

The independent Australian airpower thinktank the Williams Foundation has called for Australia’s acquisition of the F-35 JSF to be delayed to allow the aircraft to mature, in light of recent news that IOC (initial operating capability) for the US Air Force may now be as late as 2018.

Part of the presentation showed a computer simulation which calculated that the F-35 would be consistently defeated by the Russian-made SU-35 fighter aircraft. The defeat calculated by the scenario also showed the loss of the F-35's supporting airborne-early warning and air-to-air refueling aircraft.

Independent air combat analysts from Air Power Australia have also stated that the F-35 is not capable of facing high end threats; that what will be delivered (if it ever arrives) will be obsolete; and that the F-35 is not affordable or sustainable.

F 35 sure has absorbed a lot of money, it would be wise to buy more hornets or F 16's till F 35 actually starts to roll out.
