In West, a man wouldn't even buy his girlfriend an ice cream: JI chief

PESHAWAR: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq claimed on Sunday that Western ideals and culture were so materialistic that a man there would not even spend money to buy his girlfriend an ice cream.

“We don’t want the promotion of a culture in Pakistan where a couple won’t even spend Rs5 on each other for an ice cream,” he said at a clerics’ conference at Tehmash Khan Stadium in Peshawar.

The JI chief made the claim while narrating the story of a young American couple he had heard from another party leader.

Haq said the party leader, who had told him the story, on a recent trip to the US had seen the couple separately paying for their ice creams.

The JI chief also bashed the Western culture for its individual freedom and liberty.

Comparing societies, Haq said people in Western countries left their parents at old homes and met them only once a year but in Pakistan they lived as joint families.

Talking about Pakistan’s banking system, the JI leader said interests should be abolished.

“The country’s leadership isn’t serious about bringing an end to the interest system but our party will continue striving for its elimination” he added.

Criticising Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for referring to ‘Bhagwan’ as God, Haq said it was “ideological terrorism” and the premiere’s remarks were meant to appease the West.

Hi,

What an ill-informed idiot.

WTF - no one told me?!!

And I just dropped a little over a grand on my girl a couple of weekends ago!

Have No idea what you are trying to say
Apparently that's what passes for romantic conversation while wooing women in the Jamaat (and other religious parties). No wonder these parties are primarily composed of frustrated old men who protest any attempt at outlawing underage marriages - they know their chances of actually winning over a women are zilch.

Awesome weekend visiting Louisville for Thunder over Louisville.

Because God forbid a woman pay for her own damn ice cream, eh?
BTW he really is right. In the West, the men don't buy nothing for their partners. They have to buy the wedding ring themselves for a proposal!!!!!

Nothing wrong with that. The bride/bride's family typically pays most of the wedding costs.

At first I thought it was a stupid point to make, then I considered the obvious draconian message that he's trying to get across using the relatively harmless example of ice cream, sure enough, if you read, it is there. He has one valid point in all this and a purpose for using the west as some example of societal and economic degeneration.

Honestly, I can't speak for the US, but most of Western European nations both at a societal level and economic are FAR more civilised than most Muslim states, in a way, their concern for humanity is almost that which Islam tries to instil among us Muslims.

Here's where he has a point:
Comparing societies, Haq said people in Western countries left their parents at old homes and met them only once a year but in Pakistan they lived as joint families.

It's true, there is something about the cultural differences here and the economic system that leads kids sometimes to abandon their parents, sometimes completely, sometimes in old folks homes. I would not want this to become more common in Pakistan, we should treat our parents with the same love in their old age that they had for us when we were kids.

And here's partly the other purpose of his statements:
Talking about Pakistan’s banking system, the JI leader said interests should be abolished.

This is a great way to collapse the Pakistani economy and ensure that we have no banking system at all, and no connections with the outside world. Hence my point about the draconian part that was bound to be in any such statement.

.
Whoa whoa. Respectfully, let's not generalize here, sir. It's unfair to assume whether someone is a momin or not, since we all walk on our own paths and have to answer for our actions ourselves.
That being said, I agree to an extent. Many in Pakistan have turned to zealot nuts to lead them, which is not very good for the country.

Moomins are easily recognized.

I am sure I would take out a loan for 100M$ immediately,
but I would demand no amortization as well.

You can take out as much as you like, when they talk about abolishing interest, they probably don't intend to include abolishing the time value of money, but that's what it would take.
