ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman and former cricket hero Imran Khan on Monday opposed the government’s decision to hold the final of Pakistan Super League in Lahore, citing security concerns in the country.

Speaking to media shortly after the Punjab government made the decision at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Khan expressed doubt that deploying army and strict security arrangement for the event would make people think that peace has been restored.

Imran Khan said there would no cricket in Pakistan for the next ten years if fear of blast materialized.

The PTI chairman said decision to hold the final in the wake of deadly bombings was madness.

Reacting to Imran Khans’s statement, Marriyum Aurangzeb asked the PTI chairman not to become Bal Thackeray of Pakistan by opposing the cricket event.

The PSL T20 tournament is being played in United Arab Emirates and as part of their efforts to restore international cricket in the country Pakistani cricket officials and the government want to hold the final in Lahore.

Gunmen attacked a bus of Sri Lankan cricket team which was part of a convoy on March 3 2009 in Lahore. At least eight people including six po licemen were killed in the attack.

‘PSL final will be held in Lahore’

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif Monday gave the go-ahead to hold the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Lahore.

The decision was taken after a high-level security huddle, following a string of targeted attacks across the country, particularly in Lahore, which claimed nearly 100 lives.

“Law and order committee, and provincial, federal security institutions, decision to hold PSL Final in Lahore has been finalised,” the Punjab government said in a statement.

“Hundred per cent foolproof security should be assured for the PSL final in Lahore,” said Shehbaz. “The decision has been taken keeping in mind the interests of Pakistan.”

‘God willing, foreign players will play PSL final’

PSL Chairman Najam Sethi, while talking to the media in Lahore, confirmed that the final would indeed be held in Lahore on March 5.

“The nation has shown its passion and unity. The Pakistani nation is peaceful and it will not be blackmailed,” said Sethi, as he announced the decision.

Sethi said the tickets would go on sale from tomorrow, both online as well as at outlets. “Details [regarding tickets] will be available tomorrow,” he said.

Hoping for the revival of cricket in Pakistan after the successful staging of PSL final, Sethi said, “Hopefully, after the success of PSL, we will send a message to the world and cricket will come back to its home. Cricket is the heartbeat of the Pakistani nation.”

“We have to wait until March 3 to know which foreign players will travel to Lahore, as we still do not know which two teams will qualify,” he said speaking about the participation of foreign players in the final.

“We have already spoken to all foreign players. I will go back to Dubai to speak [about the final]. Inshallah, foreign players will come,” he added.

The Punjab government gave green signal to PCB for holding the final of PSL in Lahore, which was decided in a high-level meeting of the provincial authorities in Lahore, with IG Punjab, DC and CCPO Lahore, other high-ups of the Punjab government and Pakistan Sports Board in presence.

Meanwhile, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah revealed the itinerary of the final.

“We have prepared a security plan for the final. It would be a day-night contest,” he said. “We will start the match at 1630 PST and the closing ceremony will conclude at 2300 PST.”

Rameez Raja, brand ambassador of the tournament, had said earlier that hosting the final in Pakistan was of great news for all the fans as they have been starved of seeing superstars not playing at home and this will give them a great opportunity.

“I don’t know whether the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore will be able to handle the pressure of a PSL final but I’m hoping they all come and we have a great spectacle as this will take Pakistan to new horizons,” added the former Pakistan captain.

Imran opposes hosting PSL final in Lahore:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has opposed the idea of hosting PSL final in Lahore terming it ‘madness’.

“This is such a bad idea, for I can’t understand what will we gain through this,” Imran Khan said. “Bringing army to Lahore and alarming security to hold a match, that too a PSL match not an international one…Will this make people think that peace has been restored in Lahore,” he said.

This would be counterproductive, given the fact that the army providing security for the match, Khan added.

“God forbid if a blast occurs, then instead of bringing cricket to the country, there would be no cricket here for the next ten years,” Khan said.

“Keeping the present situation in view and the deadly bombings for a week, this is madness,” he said.

On February 21, the PTI chairman, while commenting on hosting of PSL final in Lahore, had said that the entire T20 league should be held in Pakistan.

‘One match can’t do miracles’

Former PCB chief Arif Ali Abbasi also held similar sentiments. Talking to a newspaper, he said: “PCB officials have failed to understand the gravity of the situation,” adding, “We should not mingle cricket with politics. Cricket is a culture and it demands peace. Cricket matches are not played in such an environment,” said Abbasi—who has the credit of organising two World Cups, in 1987 and 1996.

“One match, even if it is the final of PSL, can’t do miracles,” he added.

“Who will take responsibility if anything wrong happens?” he asked.

Abbasi said the current PCB chiefs were not related to cricket administration in any way in their professional lives. “They don’t know how to tackle the situation,” he said.

our govt want to show the world that Pakistan is peaceful by bringing a league match at cost of mini curfew (involving army in security of a match) in Lahore?

i dont think foreign players will come, soon players associations will start issuing statement against it, boards will not allow their players to play in Pakistan.. just wait and watch.

Imran Khan is right.

first blow

Imran khan called this match pagal pan for security reasons but when it come to Dharnas he rejects public security. Is that not selfish.
if any untoward incident happened then we have to forget playing int'l cricket in Pakistan for the next 10 years !! is it important to hold the final in Lahore as wide spread operations are going on in Punjab and other provinces ?? is it worth taking risk ??

Imran did multiple protests in wake of strict security risks. Was he not thinking about terrorist then and now he is thinking about terrorist. Grow up man. When it come to his personal agendas he is selfish and ready to get Pakistanis killed to bring down Nawaz they both are same.

IK has completely lost it at this point.

The status quo needs to be changed and this is one step towards bringing back international cricket to Pakistan. All politicians should be showing a united front on this matter as opposed to trying to score points against one another.

Chut1a Khan at his usual chut1apa again!

If the government decided not to hold the match in Lahore, I am willing to bet that he would have b*tched and moaned that it was the wrong decision, government caved, afraid of terrorists etc.

BUT where the decision has been made to hold the match in Pak, he's found some other reason to complain.

I swear the man has mental health problems! And in his twisted psycho dimagh he's probably hoping for an incident just so he can satisfy his ego and say I told u so.

:hitwall:

.
Unfortunately I am behind the Military on ths one 100%

Imran Khan should have offered to help ensure more checks and balance at Afghan border from KPK area to help out

It's all well and good that the match is happening in Lahore but if something happens.. (hope not) well then forget about cricket for a long time ... that's all as far as security is concerned had the NAP been implemented properly first time round we wouldn't be doing all this now.. it's high time we deal with all issues at hand and these politicians all realise that no one cares about their nonsense and if they aren't bringing a solution then get out the way and stop being part of the problem every day have to listen to this vomit nothing new and I'm not talking about Imran Khan I'm talking about that Maryam :blah: ... from the motu gang

.
Confuse khan politicise everything but i think its good idea to play PSL final in Lahore..We have witnessed empty stadium in dubai which is not good for PSL and Pakistani cricket and playing final in lahore will be slap on faces of those anti Pakistan element who are trying their best to stop this final in Lahore by conducting terrorism and creating fears

.
Imran Khan said there would no cricket in Pakistan for the next ten years if fear of blast materialized.

Even 10 years from now full proof security will be needed to held matches. We know terrorists are actively targeting cricket events in Pakistan. Last time when Zimbabwe played couple of years ago, some terrorist tried to get in to stadium but was stopped outside.

Pakistan/PCB fucked up by giving poor security to Sri Lankan team 2009 tour in height of terrorism. That was the time to wait for or either provide full proof security.

.
I OPPOSE IMRAN KHAN ON THAT.

Pakistan deserves to get its shine back. Nations stand before terrorism and fight it with courage - not track backwards. Pakistanis deserve to see sports in their stadiums and this is the time when we make it happen.

.
I stand by my words and agree with IK

PSL shouldn't have organised final in Lahore after recent incidents. PSL need to gain popularity first and they are scaring foreign players to even show willingness for future editions
