In a significant development, reports are emerging now that long-delayed test firing of Indo-Israeli LR-SAM from Indian Navy destroyer INS Kolkata will happen by the end of this year with Improved LR-SAM Interceptor missile which will have improved range of over 100km.
In our previous report, idrw.org had mentioned that DRDO has carried out some level of optimisation which now also comes with improved propellant for the missiles which has lead to improved interception range of over 90-100km in its present configuration.
The initial range of the missile was capped at 70km by the developmental team but with current improvements missile will have improved interception range and Israeli team independently are also working on Barak-8ER (extended range variant) with the addition of booster which effectively doubles the range capability of the Barak-8 interceptor to 150km.
Both ER or LR-SAM are compatible with IAI Elta ELM-2248 (MF-STAR) radar, BMC4I system and all the support systems, so new variant can be developed entirely in India with little help from Israel in future and will not require changes in existing LR-SAM System architecture.
India is currently integrating LR-SAM into the lead ship of Kolkata Class Indian Navy Destroyer ” INS Kolkata” and soon will also find its ways into ” INS Kochi” which is followup ship of Kolkata Class which already entered service last month.
