The Syrian army claimed on Tuesday it had shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone after an Israeli attack on a regime position in southern Syria, state media reported.

Syrian news agency SANA reported that President Bashar Assad's forces shot down the Israeli aircraft in Syria after the IAF struck in the southern Quneitra countryside in response to a mortar exploding in the Golan Heights. The projectile's landing in the Golan appeared to be spillover fire from fighting in Syria.

In a rare response to a foreign report, the IDF on Tuesday denied that any of its aircraft had been downed, but said Syrian forces had fired two surface-to-air missiles after the Israeli strike Monday night on a Syrian position.

However, the military said the missiles were nowhere near the vicinity of the Israel aircraft. The IDF added that all the Israeli jets had returned to base.

On Monday evening, Syrian fire crossed into the northern Golan Heights as a nationwide ceasefire brokered by the US and Russia came into effect in the embattled country.

In response, the Israeli air force attacked cannons belonging to the Syrian regime on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

The IDF considers the Syrian regime responsible for every action on its territory and will not suffer any attempt to hurt the sovereignty of the State of Israel and its residents safety, the army stated.

Eli Malka, head of the Golan Regional Council responded to Monday night's fire emanating from Syria saying, "There is no difference between spillover fire and intentional fire, a bomb is a bomb and poses a risk to human life."

"It is the responsibility of the Minister of Defense and the IDF to convey a clear message to all parties on the other side of the border that all shots fired in the Golan will be treated as firing on Israel and the IDF will respond by destructing the source of the fire," Malka added.

Is Assad crazy? He wants to roll back all the little advances his troops made recently? Lol.
I would have loved if his missilles indeed brought down this Israeli jet. That way Israel will wipe his airforce.

Assad better make sure his border with Israel in the gollan heights is secure. Else any mortar attack/fire towards Israel from there(no matter how small) will have ever consequences for his regime. He should focus on fighting rag tag rebel groups in his country.

the answer for the mortar fire is there in your own post but terrorists dont need an excuse to bomb syria. can you compare the extent of damage caused by a shell of 60/80 mortar when compared to 2000 lbs LGB from a jet?blo*dy israeli terrorists.

Does it matter? 3 spillovers in 1 week cause of the fighting in syria, should we tolerate such actions? should we tolerate missiles and rockets landing in our territory? the amount of damage doesn't mean shit

Israel sees the Syrian regime as responsible for what happens in his country, and will respond to any attack on the Israeli controlled border

IDF: Syrian claim to have shot down Israeli warplane, drone is 'total lies'

(CNN)The Israel Defense Forces have rejected Syrian military claims to have downed an Israeli warplane and drone over southwest Syria Tuesday morning as "completely false."

The General Command of the Syrian Armed Forces said in a statement that the incident occurred at 1:30 am local time Tuesday (6:30 p.m. ET Monday), after Israeli warplanes attacked a Syrian army position in al-Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights .
The statement said that Syrian air defense shot down a warplane southwest of al-Quneitra, and a drone west of the town of SaaSaa.

But the IDF spokesman's office called the claims "total lies."
Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said that "overnight two surface-to-air missiles were launched from Syria after the mission overnight to target Syrian artillery positions. At no point was the safety of IDF aircraft compromised."
The Israeli mission had been conducted to strike Syrian regime targets after a projectile launched from Syria had struck the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. No casualties had resulted from the Syrian strike on the Golan Heights, the IDF said.

The Golan has been repeatedly struck with projectiles fired from across the border in southwest Syria, as fighting in the country's five-year civil war drags on. Last week, three projectiles landed in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.
The Israeli strike on Syria came hours after a nationwide ceasefire, brokered by the United States and Russia, came into effect in the war-ravaged country.

In the first 24 hours of the deal, the second concerted attempt this year to halt the grinding civil war, the peace appeared to be holding, although a monitoring group reported a number of violations in and around Aleppo in its early hours.
Israel seized parts of the Golan Heights, a strategic, rocky plateau to its northeast, from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War.

The international community considers the Golan Heights to be occupied territory and Israeli settlement-building there to be illegal. Syria wants the return of the territory that UN peacekeeping forces have monitored for decades.
