Final two places up for grabs at ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier

ICC Media Release

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 is a few short months away and by 19 April, all eight teams will have confirmed their places at the tournament.

Hosts, India are ready to welcome the best and the brightest of women’s One Day International cricket as one of the six teams to have already qualified.

Defending champions Australia, secured their ticket to the 13th edition of the World Cup by finishing top of the ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) 2022-25.

The IWC 2022-25 saw ten nations compete with their ODI results across a three-year period totted up providing context to all ODI cricket played between these teams during that period.

With 18 wins and just three losses, Australia finished two points above India, with England rounding out the top three.

While Australia and England contended a record-breaking final in Christchurch in 2022, India did not make it out of the group stages and continue their search for their first ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup trophy.

The only other team to have won the Women’s Cricket World Cup besides multiple-time winners Australia and England are New Zealand, the hosts in 2022, having triumphed on home soil in 2000.

The White Ferns, who are the holders of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, earned a place at the 2025 edition by virtue of finishing as one of the top five teams, excluding hosts India, in the Women’s Championship table.

Finishing above them were three-time, semi-finalists South Africa, who are also still searching for a maiden ICC World Cup trophy after two near-misses at the Women’s T20 World Cups of 2023 and 2024.

The other team to have already booked their spot is Sri Lanka, who failed to qualify for the previous edition of the tournament, with the final qualifying spots for the 2022 tournament done on ranking due to the Covid-19 pandemic disrupting the cricketing schedule.

Bangladesh missed out on a spot in the Women’s Championship top six, and have joined the three other teams that competed in the Women’s Championship in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier in Pakistan set to begin next week.

Captain Nigar Sultana will be hoping for an immediate return to the Women’s Cricket World Cup after Bangladesh made their debut at the 2022 edition.

At least one team from the previous tournament will not make it to India, with the West Indies and Pakistan also taking part in the Qualifier.

Ireland finished bottom of the ICC Women’s Championship and are searching for a return to the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

The two other teams vying to qualify have never played in an ODI World Cup before, with Scotland and Thailand reaching the qualifiers based on their ICC Women’s ODI Rankings.

The former have very recent experience on a World Cup stage, however, playing in the last year’s Women’s T20 World Cup, but are still searching for a win.

Thailand had a memorable debut at the 2020 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup, having come through the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier of 2019, but like Scotland, went without a victory.

Only the top two teams at the end of the round-robin format tournament will make it to India.

Two venues in Lahore will host all of the matches, which begin on 9 April and sees hosts Pakistan take on Ireland, while Scotland face off against the West Indies.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday announced the match schedule for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025, set to take place in Pakistan, from April 9 to 19.

The Qualifier will be played across two venues in Lahore: the iconic Gaddafi Stadium and the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground.

The sixth edition of the Qualifier sees teams from four Full Members – Bangladesh, Ireland, Pakistan and the West Indies – compete with Associate Members Scotland and Thailand in the 15-match league tournament that will decide the two qualifiers for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 to be held later this year.

Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka apart from hosts India, have already qualified for the World Cup by virtue of finishing in the top six of the 10-team ICC Women’s Championship (2022-25).

Bangladesh, Ireland, Pakistan and the West Indies play in the Qualifier as they finished from places seventh to 10th in the Women’s Championship, while Thailand and Scotland made it as the next two best-ranked sides in the ICC Women’s ODI Team Rankings as of 28 October 2024.

Some exciting matchups in the tournament include Pakistan taking on the West Indies on 14 April in a day-night game at the Gaddafi Stadium, Bangladesh going up against the West Indies at LCCA on 17 April and sub-continental rivals Pakistan and Bangladesh clash at the LCCA on 19 April.

ICC CEO, Geoff Allardice said: “We are pleased to announce the match schedule for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025.

“The six competing teams are just one step away from the Women’s Cricket World Cup and I am sure they will all be eagerly looking forward to the competition.

“On behalf of the ICC, I would like to wish the teams all the best for the tournament in Lahore as part of the build-up to the Cricket World Cup later this year.”

A complete performance from Bangladesh women saw them crush Pakistan A by 167 runs in their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier warm-up match at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana led from the front with a 72-ball 70, striking 10 boundaries and a six. Her third-wicket partnership of 109 with opener Farzana Haque (50 off 85) formed the backbone of the visitors’ innings.

Despite a middle-order collapse that saw them slip to 210 for 9, tailender Jannatul Ferdus played a game-changing cameo, remaining unbeaten on 46 from just 34 balls to lift the side to 276 all out in 49.4 overs.

Pakistan A bowlers Umm-e-Hani and Waheeda Akhtar claimed three wickets apiece, with Tania Saeed adding two more to her name.

In reply, Pakistan A struggled from the outset and were bowled out for just 109 in 39.1 overs. Hani top-scored with an unbeaten 26, while Eyman Fatima was the only other batter to reach double digits.

Bangladesh’s bowling unit delivered a clinical display, with Fahima Khatun, Marufa Akter and Rabeya taking two wickets each. Fariha Islam Trisna and Sumona added one scalp each to round off a dominant showing.

Pakistan A will now regroup ahead of the tournament opener against Ireland at Gaddafi Stadium on April 9. The same day, West Indies face Scotland at LCCA.

The top two teams from the qualifiers will earn their place at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, joining Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and hosts India.

Pakistan women beat Ireland by 38 runs in a low-scoring thriller to win the opening One-Day International (ODI) encounter of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 Qualifiers on Wednesday.

On a hot day in Lahore, Pakistan’s Diana Baig and Nashra Sandhu starred with the ball, picking up four and three wickets each to bowl the Irish women’s team out for 179.

Seamer Diana got the prized scalp of opener Sarah Forbes in her first spell and then came back to clean up the tail by getting the wickets of Christina Coulter Reilly, Louise Little and Arlene Kelly.

Left-arm spinner Nashra got the wickets of Irish captain Gaby Lewis, Amy Hunter and Laura Delany, not letting the Irish top-order push on towards the target after a decent start.

The final wicket for Ireland fell to a run-out, with Skipper Fatima Sana lobbing the ball to Nashra at the stumps to end the Ireland innings by running out Cara Murray.
None of the Irish batters were able to cross the 50 mark, with captain Lewis and batter Hunter scoring 44 each.

Earlier, the hosts were bowled out in the penultimate over of the innings and could not capitalise on a decent start, being just three down for 153 at one stage in the match.

Pakistan’s Aliya Riaz top scored for the hosts, hitting 52 of just 58 deliveries in an innings where she hit four boundaries and a six.

Sidra Amin was the other half-centurion for Pakistan, getting her 50 of 110 balls and scoring three boundaries in the process.

Scotland 244 (Sarah Bryce 55, McColl 45, Matthews 4-56) beat West Indies 233 (Matthews 114, James 45, Fraser 3-50) by 11 runs

Scotland pulled off the first upset of the Women's World Cup Qualifiers by denying Hayley Matthews, who single-handedly kept West Indies in the game despite leaving the field twice with severe cramps, and beating the side by 11 runs.

Matthews became only the fourth player to take four wickets and score a century in an ODI but West Indies' over-reliance on her cost them. She took four of the first five Scotland wickets and forced herself to return to the crease twice - once off a stretcher to keep batting when West Indies were nine wickets down - but it was not enough.

Scotland were the side that rallied around Sarah Bryce's 55 (off 56 balls) and her 82-run fifth wicket stand with Megan McColl and then their spinners. Offpinners Katherine Fraser and Darcy Carter and legspinner Abtaha Maqsood took six wickets between them to defend 244 and get their first points on the board.

In the day's other match, hosts Pakistan had their bowlers, led by senior seamer Diana Baig, to thank for securing them a 38 run win over Ireland.

Pakistan trudged through their innings to score 217 and Ireland were bossing the chase on 96 for 1 in side 24 overs. Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu took three wickets in four overs to leave Ireland's middle-order exposed before Baig took care of the tail.

She finished with figures of 4 for 35 in her first appearance for the team since their opening match of last year's T20 World Cup and got Pakistan's campaign off to a winning start.

West Indies 181 for 6 (Taylor 46, Henry 46, James 36, Maguire 3-35) beat Ireland 175 (Hunter 48, Delany 32, Matthews 4-24, Ramharack 2-27, Alleyne 2-33) by six runs

West Indies survived a major scare against Ireland on their way to their first points of the Women's World Cup Qualifier. Chasing 182 in a match reduced to 33 overs a side, Ireland were 57 for no loss in the 11th over, then lost 4 for 23 and needed 98 runs from 96 balls with six wickets in hand.

The required rate ebbed and flowed as wickets fell, and at nine down, Ireland needed 26 from 23. That became 15 off 12 and eight off the last over, but Hayley Matthews once again had the decisive say and claimed the final wicket to finish with figures of 4 for 24.

Ireland will rue their batting effort in the immediate aftermath, but once the dust has settled will know the game was lost in the field, where they dropped six catches and allowed West Indies to post a challenging target.

At least in the batting department, West Indies had contributors other than Matthews as they shook off a slow start in the tournament, following defeat to Scotland two days ago, and criticism over the lack of contributions from other senior stars. This time, a pair of 46s from Stafanie Taylor and Chinelle Henry anchored the innings.
