Superb performance by Pakistan

Thanks . Big game on Saturday though Pakistan team has big big problems in its bowling . Semi finals will be an achievement .

I see a lot of KL Rahul in Abdullah Shafique. Great future prospect for Team Pakistan. The lazy & languid footwork and the elegant drives coupled with occasional powerful strikes. It was a beautiful inning, which I enjoyed a lot (I was on sick leave yesterday, so got to watch the full match). In the future, if not in opening, he can be molded into a excellent no. 4/5 batsman.

Rizwan's was as usual excellent with his calculated inning. He has taken a shine to no.4 position and looks unstoppable. Enjoyed the drama with his "sometimes cramps & sometimes acting" too.

Well played Team Pakistan inspite of some ordinary bowling effort in the first 35 over (Constructive criticism only & its a scope for further improvement) & the fierce innings from Kushal Mendis.

The other guy, Saud, also looks promising. Finally some bold selection paying dividend. Its time to give some break to Sadab to sort out his line & length issue though. May be Abrar playing in his place will make Pakistan a serious contender for the cup.

Pakistans strength is in its bowling - Sri Lanka smashed them and if they pulled their finger out should have hit 375 plus.

Worry that the bowling hasnt clicked. To get into the top 4 - 6 or 7 games have to be won. Winning 2 has certainly given them a head start.
Its a really long tournament and they need to focus on getting their big guns in the bowling dept functioning.

BTW Kholi still got it and he was the key against Aussies.

India 273 for 2 (Sharma 131, Kohli 55*, Rashid 2-57) beat Afghanistan 272 for 8 (Shahidi 80, Omarzai 62, Bumrah 4-39) by 8 wickets

India vs Afghanistan was one of the closer encounters of the 2019 World Cup, but a blistering hundred from Rohit Sharma ensured there would be no double jeopardy in 2023. Any jeopardy at all was taken out of the game in the first ten overs or so of the chase, when Rohit, who went past Sachin Tendulkar for most hundreds at the ODI World Cup, took the attack to all Afghanistan bowlers, turning a potentially tricky chase of 273 into a net run rate boosting cakewalk.

A half-century from Virat Kohli capped a near-perfect day for India as they eased to an eight-wicket win with 15 overs to spare, after a disciplined performance with the ball had restricted Afghanistan to a below-par total despite half-centuries from Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai.

India's top order, Rohit included, had missed out badly against Australia after the hosts fell to 2 for 3. Today, Rohit would ensure there was to be no repeat of that. A sedate first couple of overs were followed by Rohit's first boundary, and the floodgates opened. Fazalhaq Farooqi was belted over long-off for a six followed up by a couple of fours.

There was a repeat dose in his following Farooqi over, with Rohit speeding along to a lightning half-century, which he brought up with a boundary, off 27 balls. Another couple of sixes and a boundary followed, and by the end of the powerplay, India had rollicked along to 94, the highest of this tournament.

With Ishan Kishan content to play a supporting role at the other end, Rohit let his languid arms loose. The spinners weren't spared; Mujeeb-ur-Rahman leaking three boundaries in four deliveries to the opener, and before the end of the 18th over, the inevitable Rohit hundred was up. Coming in 63 balls, it was the fastest by an Indian at an ODI World Cup; that Rohit was the one that achieved that record was not in the least surprising.

Rashid Khan removed Ishan Kishan at the other end, but Rohit just motored along with Kohli for a while. But Rashid, who came on to bowl later than his side perhaps needed him, finally cleaned him up with a flipper for 131, though by now India needed only to go through the motions. Kohli's innings was little more than batting practice, and by the time he tonked the winning shot back down the ground, that net session, and India's win, was complete.

SL Lost because of their fielding, I did not see Pakistan batting because it was too early for me. but heard they also dropped catches.

Fans throng hospitals for overnight stay as India-Pakistan hysteria grips Ahmedabad

Cricket fever has gripped Ahmedabad ahead of Saturday’s World Cup group stage clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan and a visit to the hospitals near the venue of the match in the western Indian city clearly shows the degree of excitement.

Quite a few hospitals have seen a sudden influx of patients booked in for check-ups involving a night’s stay to coincide with the most anticipated match of the 50-over showpiece.

Several doctors told local media the rush for check-up “packages” was an ingenious way to find affordable accommodation as hotel costs have soared up to 20-fold ahead of the match.

“We have come across some cases of people coming to watch the India-Pakistan match also taking an appointment for health check-ups and staying in hospitals,” Tushar Patel, President of the Ahmedabad Medical Association, told Reuters.

The Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association has discouraged its members from accommodating such fans.

“We have asked our members not to entertain such requests. Hospitals are not meant for non-patients,” its president Bharat Gadhavi told Reuters.

Three wars

The Asian neighbours have fought three wars since becoming separate countries in 1947 and the relationship further soured after the 2008 Mumbai attack.

While bilateral cricket became a casualty of geopolitical realities, it also whetted the appetite for a clash between neighbours who play each other only in multi-team events.

India and Pakistan head into the showdown having both won their opening two matches at the tournament.

The first batch of tickets for Saturday’s game were sold out within an hour of going on sale in August, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release another 14,000 earlier this month.

Ahmedabad resident Hemish Patel and his friends, after several days of failed attempts, grabbed four tickets, each costing 6,000 Indian rupees ($72.15). “We logged into the site with multiple devices,” he said.

“We constantly kept on refreshing the site and were able to book within 10 minutes after the sale of tickets began,” he said. Patel was one of the lucky few.

Tickets are fetching up to 25 times face value on resale and city police arrested four youths on Tuesday for selling fakes.

Airfare has surged up to four times and Indian railways will run a pair of super fast trains linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Perfect venue

The 134,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium, which hosted former US President Donald Trump in 2020 and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earlier this year, looks like a perfect arena for cricket’s fiercest rivalry.

According to Indian media reports, Saturday’s game will kick off with a musical performance and with be graced by Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachan, Rajnikanth and others.

Ahmedabad has been declared a “no-drone zone” on Saturday, and 11,000 security personnel will be deployed for the high-profile match, Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik said.

On their first tour of India since the 2016 T20 World Cup, Pakistan were accorded a warm welcome in Hyderabad, where they played their first two matches.

India have a perfect 7-0 record against Pakistan at ODI World Cups and while the rivalry assumes the Orwellian concept of serious sport — “war minus the shooting” — players from both sides share good relations.

During the Sri Lanka leg of the Asia Cup last month, Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi gave Jasprit Bumrah a gift for the Indian’s newborn baby and the video went viral.

It will be a special occasion for Indian Liyakat Khan, whose daughter Samiya is married to Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali.

“My wife went to Pakistan in 2021 when my daughter was expecting her first child. We will meet again … I can’t wait to hold my grandchild,” Khan told the Indian Express newspaper.
