Australia beats West Indies by four wickets in warm-up game

Shane Watson’s blistering 135 off 98 balls led Australia to a comfortable four-wicket win over the West Indies in its ICC Champions Trophy 2013 warm-up fixture in Cardiff on Saturday (June 1).

Chasing 257, Watson, unfazed by the loss of wickets at the other end, hit 14 boundaries and four sixes along the way.

Earlier, Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies captain, won the toss and elected to bat.

West Indies got off to a flying start as Johnson Charles, the opener, scored a brisk half-century laced with ten boundaries. But it was Darren Bravo’s quickfire 86 that formed the cornerstone of West Indies’ innings and helped it post 256 for 9.

After the early loss of Devon Smith, the opener, Charles and Darren Bravo added 65 runs for the second wicket before Clint McKay trapped Charles lbw.

Post Ramnaresh Sarwan’s dismissal, Darren Bravo and Dwayne Bravo steadied the innings with a stand of 53 runs. But McKay broke the threatening partnership as Mitchell Starc dug into the lower order.

Starc was the pick among the Australian bowlers as he bagged four wickets at an economy rate of 4.14. McKay returned figures of 3 for 45.

In reply, Australia rode on the 125-run fourth-wicket stand between Watson and Adam Voges. Voges, who had an impressive finish to the Australian summer coupled with an unbeaten century against West Indies in the fifth ODI at the MCG in February, played second fiddle to Watson after the early loss of wickets.

Tino Best finally brought an end to Watson’s blitz in the 30th over, with Australia 60 runs short of the target. Voges, who played a measured innings to start with failed to set himself free and soon fell to Best. Cameos from Mitchell Marsh (39 off 19 balls) and Matthew Wade (15 off 22 ball ) then took Australia home in the 38th over.

Australia plays its second and final warm-up game against India at the same venue on June 4 before taking on England in Birmingham on June 8 in a league stage encounter.

Kohli, Karthik seal five-wicket win for India

Chasing Sri Lanka’s 333 for 3, India romps home with an over to spare

With both sets of players enjoying themselves on a bright and sunny day in Birmingham on Saturday (June 1), Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik made the difference with stroke-filled centuries to lead India to a comfortable five-wicket win over Sri Lanka with an over to spare in their ICC Champions Trophy 2013 warm-up game.

Kohli (144) and Karthik (106 not out) made up for a shoddy Indian bowling performance with a 186-run stand for the fifth wicket that helped India chase down the 334-run target. The two got together at 110 for 4 in the 21st over, and batted with a lot of composure and poise even as the asking rate touched almost ten runs an over with 20 overs to spare.

Karthik, slow to begin with, gained confidence and composure as the innings progressed. He blasted 12 fours and two sixes even as the Sri Lankan bowlers failed to stop a rampaging Kohli at the other end.

Kohli, who brought up his century in the 37th over, didn't drop guard even after getting to the landmark. He was eventually dismissed in the 44th over, but by then the damage had been done.

However, it wasn't entirely smooth sailing for India as the bowlers struggled for consistency after Mahendra Singh Dhoni opted to field. The new ball bowlers – Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Irfan Pathan – failed to make early inroads. But credit for that should be given to Kushal Perera, who threw the bowlers out of gear with an aggressive approach.

With Tillakaratne Dilshan (retired out on 84) at the other end, Kusal batted without any hint of pressure and eventually retired on 82 to make way for the middle-order batsmen to get a hit. Apart from Vinay Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja, who beat the batsmen on a number of occasions, none of the other Indian bowlers were able to make a mark.

Mahela Jayawardena (30), Kumar Sangakkara (45) and Dinesh Chandimal (46) all had productive stints in the middle before being dismissed. And in the end, an unbeaten 16-ball 26 from Thisara Perera lifted them to their imposing total.

While the batsmen made merry, the bowling attack that missed the spearhead – Lasith Malinga – was handled with ease by Kohli. After the initial burst with the new ball that saw Shikhar Dhawan (1), Murali Vijay (18) and Rohit Sharma (5) dismissed cheaply, Sri Lanka came under Kohli's wheel before Karthik finished it off with a boundary. Suresh Raina (34) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (18 not out) too chipped in with useful knocks.

Last chance for Pakistan, SA to firm up plans

The Monday match is South Africa’s only warm-up fixture prior to the ICC Champions Trophy, while Pakistan too has only this match for practice after the game against Sri Lanka was washed out

45758.jpg

South Africa and Pakistan last played against one another in a tightly-contested One-Day International series in March this year, with South Africa winning by a 3-2 margin. With both teams possessing considerable strength in their bowling attacks, it was expected that the bowlers on each side would come to the fore, and that is what happened.

Both are likely to bank on their bowlers for the ICC Champions Trophy in England too, and will have a chance to test out their relative strengths when they face off in a warm-up clash at The Oval in London on Monday (June 3).

South Africa will be without two of its most experienced members in Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith, and while AB de Villiers, the captain, acknowledged that they would be missed, he pointed out that their absence had given new players an opportunity to shine.

South Africa already took positive steps in its match against Netherlands, with JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis, both returning from injuries, hitting rich form in an 84-run win. South Africa was without Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel too, and when the two return, the side will wear a formidable look despite of the absence of the stalwarts.

Pakistan’s preparations might have been set back a tad with its first warm-up match against Sri Lanka washed outon Thursday, but the side will be battle-hardened enough after two close shaves against Ireland, with a tie and a last-gasp win. Pakistan will be aware that South Africa will pose a much greater challenge, as indeed will the other teams in the competition, but Misbah-ul-Haq, the captain, can draw some consolation from the fact that the team has had some time to get acclimatised and has the talent to beat anyone if everything falls into place.

South Africa has only this warm-up match before the tournament starts, while Pakistan also effectively has only this one match after the washout. As such, though this might be a warm-up and both teams are likely to experiment, there shouldn’t be any let-up in intensity from either.
