Indian Air Force dominates Pokharan air space in biggest ever wargame
Sun, Feb 28 06:40 PM

Pokharan, Feb 28 (ANI): Operation Vayu Shakti 2010 showcased the tremendous firepower demonstration of the Indian Air Force on Sunday in three parts-during the day, at dusk and at night, which is essential for the IAF's success in any battle.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and the three service chiefs, besides senior officers of the armed forces witnessed the firepower demonstration of the Air Force. Defence attaches of 28 countries including the US, UK, France also witnessed the preparedness of the IAF.

"Vayu Shakti 2010 is aimed at providing the nation reassurance that the IAF will deliver when called upon. The need of present time is to be lethal, flexible and agile," Air Chief Marshal PV Naik, the Chief of the Air Staff, said in a statement.

In order to control the air space of the Thar Desert, the area was battered by thousands of tonnes of TNT as combat aircraft and attack helicopeters of the IAF carried out the biggest ever exercise of live bombing, using air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles.

Besides control of the air space, the objective of the exercise was to destroy the enemy's war-making potential. The responsibility to hit hard at the enemy is the task of the Air Force and a critical requirement of any battle.

Almost every branch of the Air Force contributed to the mission. The IAF fighters blasted simulated targets on the ground with a breath-taking display of aerial combat.

The FPD saw frontline fighter aircraft like Su-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, Jaguar, MiG-21 and MiG-29. The supporting transport fleet included AN-32, Embraer and IL-76, while Mi-17 1V and Mi-35 attack helicopters constituted the rotary wing ingredients.

For the first time, Phalcon AWACS (air-borne warning and control system) were used to monitor the huge exercise, while an unmanned aerial vehicle streamed live video images of the target destruction. Another force multiplier - IL 78 mid air refueller - was also used in the exercise.

A total of 107 aircrafts participated in the exercise. Some of them getting airborne from far off bases like Agra, Bareily and Nagpur besides from bases in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

In addition, the Akash Ganga, the IAF's parajumping team and IAF's Garuda Force performed their dare devil stunts to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

The entire show, which was televised live across the country, was the outcome of a month-long planning, preparation and practice by the IAF pilots, engineers and the armament technicians who worked together to make the show a grand success.

The operation took place at Chandan field firing range at Pokharan, which is spread in 99,000 acres. By Praful Kumar Singh (ANI)

IAF carries out fire power exercise with frontline aircraft

Showcasing its precision strike capabilities during day and night, Indian Air Force on Sunday carried out a massive fire power blitzkrieg using its frontline aircraft such as SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, MIG 27 and MIG 29, at the Pokhran ranges in Rajasthan.

The high-voltage exercise ‘Vayu Shakti’, witnessed by President Pratibha Patil, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and a host of foreign dignitaries, showcased massive bombing, aerial dog fight and day-night air drop of commandos in the Thar desert.

In the two-hour event, 100 combat, reconnaissance, transport and rotary wing aircraft took part in the massive Fire Power Demonstration (FPD) by the world’s fourth-largest air force and displayed the day and night employability of air power by frontline fighter aircraft.

Speaking on the occasion, South Western Air Command Chief Air Marshall P.S. Bhangu said the demonstration was being carried out after six years and the plan was to hold it more frequently.

Despite Saturday’s crash-landing at Jaisalmer, the Sarang team performed with its ALH Dhruv helicopters. A chopper of the team had crash-landed due to loss of power in flight on Saturday while rehearsing for the show.

Along with the Surya Kiran and the Sarang aerobatic display teams, the Sukhoi-30s also performed aerial stunts.

Russian-origin Mi-35 attack helicopters, Mi-17 medium lift helicopters, IL-76 heavy lift and AN-32 medium lift transport plane also flew over the venue for the day-and-night air drop for specialised operations.

For the first time, the AWACS was used to monitor the mammoth exercise while an unmanned aerial vehicle streamed live video images of the target destruction.

In addition to 70 aircraft which participated in the exercise, 30 aircraft were kept on standby, in both air and on the ground.

For the FPD, mock radar sites, tanks, marshalling yards, terrorist camps, runway, BMP infantry fighting vehicles, blast pens and convoys are among a few of the targets that pilots destroyed.

IAF’s Special Forces Garuds were also para-dropped, who carried out the drill to neutralise a mock terrorist camp.

Displaying jointness among Services, Army’s Special Forces and Navy’s Marine Commandos also took part in the exercise.

The idea of the exercise is to project the IAF’s objectives in its present avatar, as spelt out by Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik: “To see first and farthest, to reach first and furthest and to hit hard and accurately.”

I don't see a real need for bombers, but if in future wars we would need such a capability, I think the P8I will be used for it.
P8I will have a radar that can detect ground targets and is said to use PGM, stand off missiles, besides torpedos and anti-ship missiles. So a P8I armed with SLAMMER and JDAM could be used as a bomber too.

err... Why do you want to turn a 300 m$ plane into a bomb truck?

^^ I completely agree the role as the P8I are far more important and i believe they are way more vauable to be used for bombing

Well i wouldn't go as far as that since just yesterday, another one of these machines seems to have fallen out of the sky.

IAF's Dhruv helicopter crash-lands in Jaisalmer | Deccan Chronicle

I can list the number of american OH-58's or UH-60's lost due to technical failures in the last 10 years. The number is more than 25. Two Dhruv crashes have been with the Sarang team. They take these machines to the very edge of their flight envelope and such accidents are but a matter of time. You should check how many OH-58's have had hard landings and pilots died. I would say Dhruv has a very good crash worthiness record.
