how many of the fighters of say IAF can be taken out in a large scale first strike by say China?

I hope this is factored in and precautions taken to avoid large scale losses against sudden unprovoked attacks on IAF bases, if at all that is a possibility..!!

in Conventional Strike may be they will get lucky with a few ..
in all out nuke strike may be 40-50 ....

Cruise Missiles have a very limited area of attack and bunker-ed planes can easily be saved ... a heavy strike force of Fighters and Bombers over Tibet can always be detected beforehand (so that is not an option) ...

in case of Nuke strike by Cruise and Ballistic missiles effectively all the Fighters over ground can be targeted.. but most fighters underground can be saved...

actually india has a large landmass..so india can easily spread its fleet in different airbases and this will be tough to destroy a large portion of them.and as our awacs will be operational in big numbers and air attacks from tibet will be discovered long ago, hope only north eastern and northern squadrons will face the hammer.though there are huge amount of air defence,if they even succeed,it will not be a huge loss as most of important assets are based on other sectors.

Hopefully the much waited TEJAS will be inducted by then...

jags are 120 in nos. not 100 + some mig-27 (may be 50-60) will still be in service but with limited role, so add another 80 or so fighters to ur total. The total no. around 2022 will surely be more than 800.

+ can IAF become third largest air force around 2022 after USAF & PLAAF??? that would mean leaving behind the Russians, our largest suppliers.

Your assumptions are a bit wrong

While currently we do have 100 Jaguar IS, 12 Jaguar IM and 20 Jaguar Trainers , BUT apart from 50 Jaguar IS , and 7 Trainers , which were inducted in 2001-08 , the rest of the fleet will be 30-35 Yr old in 2022, and should retire inspite of upgrade .
As far as Mig27 are concerned , well they are suposed to begin retirement in 2015 , With the Rafale actually replacing them sqd by sqd , Infact Rafale is expected to replace 5 Sqds of Mig 27 and first 2 sqds of Jaguar
Remaining 4 Sqds of Jaguar and 3 Sqds of Mirage would be replaced by AMCA , unless it is delayed then we could see 74 More Rafales replacing 4 Remaining Jaguar Sqds

RuAF has 1669 Fighters and 200 Strategic Bombers at present

Even if we go by their induction plan till 2015 and assume that they dont induct any more fighters / Bombers till 2022 , They will still have 950+ Fighters and 100+ Bombers in 2022

While IAF would be lucky to wound up with 800 Fighters in 2022

.
Whatever way you look at it- the IAF is going to be a completely new force by 2022- one of the most powerful AFs on the planet!

. . .
Well it's a good thing the IAF has plenty of underground hangers in strategic locations!

actually aircraft bunker has one major advantage and one major disadvantage.this kind of hard structure is tough to destroy and it protects air assets.but due to bunker blaster weapons,it is a huge risk to store huge amount of air assets into that kind of bunker.but if the hardened structure gets proper air defence and if it is in a strategic location, then why not???i hope chinese air force can't penetrate a huge amount of sam web to destroy these hardened structure if placed in a strategic positions.

. .
and why the heck did we spend on buying the AWACS if planes on the ground cant be protected from bombings by enemy fighters? They are supposed to detect enemy a/cs at long ranges...isnt it?
