What's new

IAF has 220 Su-30MKI's in Active Service.

The orders are-
1. 50 SU-30MK and MKIs ordered directly from Russia in 1996..
2. Another 40 SU-30MKIs, ordered direct in 2007.
3. A license-build deal with India’s HAL -140 more SU-30MKI Phase 3 planes (MoU 2000)..
4.A final deal of 42 HAL-built in December 2012.

ie. TOTAL=50+40+140+42= 272.. (4 crashed)

Completion...
1. 50 SU 30 (8MK+10K+32MKI)... all upgraded to MKI's...
2. I think deal (2007) is the confusion....
This deal is neither an off the shelf buy nor an indegenous production... It's an assemby for speeding up the induction .... Proof for this is after the Dec 2012 HAL Chairman R. K. Tyagi
"HAL's total responsibility for this supersonic multirole aircraft has now gone up to 222," said HAL Chairman R. K. Tyagi. "
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. building Su-30 MKI fighters - UPI.com

More proof in 2009 before DEC 2012 deal of 42...
In addition to licensed manufacture of 140 SU-30 aircraft by M/s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a contact for procurement of additional 40 SU-30 MKI was signed with M/s HAL in 2007. Out of these three aircraft have been delivered to the Indian Air Force and delivery of the remaining aircraft is expected to be completed by 2011-12.
The manufacturing of the aircraft will be under Transfer of Technology agreement between M/s HAL and M/s Resoboronexport, Russia. M/s HAL would be procuring the technical kits from Russia and assembling the aircraft.
This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply (2009) to Shri L Raja Gopal in Lok Sabha.....

Also in 2011 before Dec 2012 deal of additional 42MKI....
Subsequent to CCS Sanctions, contracts were concluded with IAF for supply of 140 8U-30 MIG aircraft by 2014-15. Further contract for supply of additional 40 SU-30 MKI aircraft was concluded with IAF for completion within 2014-15, along with earlier order of 140 aircraft. Out of the total 180 aircraft, 99 aircraft have been delivered till 2010-11.This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Shri MM PallamRaju in written reply to Shri Nand Kumar Sai in Rajya Sabha.

3.Licence build deal- Not know the exact number... but HAL production=total 134( out of 222)... The HAL production increases to 28/ annum (may be because of indeginous+ assembly production) ..

4. Latest deal final deal signed in 2012.. HAL will produce or assembled...
India, Russia seal new defence deals - Livemint

So total SU 30s in IAF=50+134=184...

NB:Also as Eighth squandron raised in DEC2012.. That is 18*8=144 in DEC2012.. Total produced will be close to above in 2014.

So your estimate is 184 total with IAF.

What is the timeline for the remaining 88 jets?

What about the 42 Super SU 30's that was to be signed by Putin in 2012? was it signed and if done then what's the delivery schedule?.

India has 7 times the population of Pakistan. IAF needs 7 times the number of Su-30MKI as the number of JF-17 in PAF. 150 JF-17 ordered should be responded with 150 * 7 = 1050 Su-30MKI ordered. :yes4:

I'm not sure what to make of this. Until last year, multiple sources estimated the total in IAF service to be 160+. This, for instance:
168 Sukhoi Su-30 MKI Presently Flying In The Indian Air Force [IAF]

Has the batch of 40 ordered in 2007 been delivered? I thought that the batch confirmed in 2012 was the same 40 ordered in 2007, with the next batch of 42 super-30s awaiting confirmation. Therefore, a total of 272. Your link seems to suggest that the 40 ordered in 2007 have already been delivered, and that the order for the 42 supers have been placed in 2012.

Not all delivered planes are active. PAF has 49 JF-17, but only two squadrons are active as of now.

Furthermore, all of PAF's 50 delivered JF-17 were manufactured by PAC. All the JF-17 delivered by China were used for testing. It is possible that all the Su-30MKI delivered by Russia were used for testing, and that the 134 Su-30MKI manufactured by HAL were delivered to IAF.

IMO, PAF has 50 - 1 = 49 JF-17 and IAF has 134 - 4 = 130 Su-30MKI, giving a ratio of 130 / 49 = 2.65 in favor of IAF.

Just my two cents. :yes4:

India hopes to put 272 Russia’s Su-30MKI fighters into service by 2018

The Indian Air Force’s backlog of orders for Russia’s Su-30MKI fighters, makes up 272.

The fighters are assembled by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) that has received a license from Russia’s Sukhoi aircraft maker.

“Since India received 50 assembled planes from Russia, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited had assembled another 134 fighters in India,” a source close to the Indian company told Itar-Tass on Monday. “We hope to form 14 squadrons of Su-30MKI fighters by 2018. By this time we will have 272 such planes in service.”

After this India might enlarge its backlog of orders, if the Sukhoi/HAL fifth generation fighter project or introduction into service of India’s own light fighter Tejas were delayed, the source said.

The Indian Air Force is expected to get its first squadron of Tejas in 2015 and the second one - in 2017. The project to build India’s Tejas fighters began in 1983. The plane made its maiden flight in January 2011.

Anyone know what happened to the first two batches of Su-30 delivered from Russia? These ones did not have canards and it seems to me non canard Su-30 cannot be upgraded to canard Su-30 due to different airframe. Canard ones have a straight part of the airframe on which the canards are attached. Non canard ones have a curved LEX in this section.

Sukhoi Su-30MKI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IMO, IAF currently has 134 from HAL + 32 Su-30MKI delivered from Russia which were batches 3, 4, 5 of the initial 50 Su-30 ordered from Russia - 4 Su-30MKI lost to accident = 162 Su-30MKI. :yes2:

wiki lists 9 Su-30MKI squadrons. Assuming 18 per squadron, total number should be 9 * 18 = 162, which would match my calculation. :yes4: Assuming all 50 Su-30 delivered from Russia are active, the total number of Su-30 would be 50 + 134 - 4 = 180. Assuming 20 per squadron, the number of squadrons would be 180 / 20 = 9, which matches the number of Su-30 squadrons given by wiki.

There is much confusion because Su-30MKI and Su-30 are often used interchangeably, so it is likely there are a total of 9 Su-30 squadrons in IAF, and it is not known exactly how many of the 4 Su-30 lost to accident were Su-30MKI. Furthermore, initially 50 Su-30 were ordered directly from Russia and 140 were ordered to be manufactured at HAL for a total order of 190 Su-30. It is likely that the additional Su-30 ordered later were to be manufactured by HAL rather than delivered from Russia, which is why Russia only delivered 50 Su-30. Currently, 272 Su-30 are on order, 50 delivered from Russia, 134 delivered from HAL, another 88 Su-30 to be delivered from HAL.

The final conclusion is, the number of Su-30 in IAF is 180, and the number of Su-30MKI in IAF ranges from a low of 162 to a high of 180.

Tejas first flight in January 2011? Seriously? Cuz that's when J-20 made its first flight. :disagree: SP-3 and SP-4 are to be delivered in 2015. I seriously hope IAF doesn't form the first Tejas squadron with only two planes.

There were only 18 Su30 fighters in k and Mk versions . Russia bought them back and replaced it with MKI.

They have re-exported those18 fighters .
