Wow, that doesn't look good at all, majority of the fleet is from the '60's era. I don't understand why they're taking so long just to decide which plane to buy, not to mention the time it will take to deliver the new planes. Even the LCA program is taking its own sweet time, and the high crash rate...

very, very disappointing, the IAF urgently needs to get its act together.

Actually by 2013 there should be 230 mkis with 40 lca, 50 upg m2k, 65 upg mig 29,also at least 40 mrca by 2014 with 6 each of phalcon, il 78, and airbus tankers not to mention 5-10 pak fa for testing along with that you have 120 jaguars for strike with 125 mig 21s for air defense all that combined with spyder, lrsam, srsam, akash, pad, aad for important locations and legacy systems for other locations as all of those missiles except for spyder and akash wont be produced in huge numbers by 2015 however they could still be produced in substantional numberS which could make a huge diference if they are networkd with civil and non civil radars and other units.

Majority of the fleet being from the 60's era is not necessarily a bad thing as long as they have been periodically upgraded and modernised. Afterall, even the great F-16s (earliest models) are of 1976 vintage and B-52s are still in service. It is fashionable nowadays, (and a tool with which to denigrate the other guy) to call every thing 'Soviet Ere' or 'Legacy'. Tell me which new aircraft apart from the F-22 has USA built since 1990? Or aircraft carrier for that matter? Going by that definition, almost everything the US flies is 'Soviet Era' or 'Cold War Era'.
Having said that, I agree that you are right and we need to move faster in order to catch up with China. Having been fixated with Pakistan for far too long has caused us to aim too low. It is a good sign that this is changing at last.

Sir where did you get the figure of M2000- 50 nos and Jaguar - 120 nos.

As per the list provided by NEo the numbers should be 30+ Mirages and around 80 Jaguars.

Edit : Gucci, Just checked with my sources your figure for the Jaguars matches.

Neo,

As per my information around 178 Jaguars were delivered to IAF. Around 34 -35 have been lost to crashes. Taking out 25 Trainers, the list is still around 125+.

Is there something which I am missing?

nice day dream..

2002-2009 = 7 years

IAF produced only 60 MKIs

2009-2013 = 4 years

according to a fanboy IAF will produce 160 in just 4 years...
looks like some one has been dreaming alot.

Hi Neo, can you tell me where you got this numbers from? Some infos are not right, the 18 Su 30 MKs were sold back to Russia and replaced by new MKIs in 2007. Also this year the last squad of Mig 23 was decommissioned and replaced by MKIs, some of them are left in service as trainers for Mig 27.

At first 2014/15 was the intention not sure if they can keep it, but you should keep in mind that the production number will increased during the years. Nobody starts to produce a new aircraft directly with 10 or more per year, that's. Also the total number HAL wanted to produce is 140, so they only would have to produce 80 more.

P.S. Here is another fleet list:

its been confirmed that there are at LEAST 70-80 mki's but i estimate there may be as many as 120-140 right now with 40 more on the way from Russia that leaves 50-70 more to be built in 4 years and the air chief confirmed that mki delivery is on schedule even with the escalations (which was a clause when the contract was signed) thus 2013-2014 will mean at least 11 sqn's of mki (229).

60 mki's in 14 years doesn't make sense that's about 4 mki's produced per year and that figure is way way too low, i think if mki's were produced at 10 a year there should be at least 140 mki's and 10 a year isn't very high, heck even china has more su-30's if you go by the 60 mki's in service and they signed the contract more than 3 years later. for me i believe there must be 120-140 mki's in service.

and i think 20 lca's will be inducted by 2010 and 20 more by 2013 is highly likely.

as for mirage 2000 its been reported that 51 have been delivered and i've only seen reports of 1 crash so far.

as for phalcon i believe contract should be signed this year for 3 more and they should arrive a bit faster since experience was gained on the first 3 which should all arrive by 2011.

and the airbus tanker deal is to be signed this year as well while the il-78's are all in service.

oh and dont forget about the 16 mig 29k's for the IN along with an option for 30 more which i believe will be exercised soon.

and barak and matri will complete development by 2011 and production starts in 2012 and spyder will be 100% induced by 2015 and 5-6 akash systems should be inducted as well, and pad and aad should be available in small numbers (20-50 missiles each) by 2015.
