IAF clueless about what's causing bulk of its aircraft to crash

i know Indian military academies are amongst the most disciplined in the world, i'm not blaming the staff, i'm only talking about of bunch of new recruits, out of whom one happens to be my close friend.


Hey c'mon; are you trying to talk 'bout yourself? Do you even know 'bout the 'sniff-test'?
BTW, did you get turned down for the Services?

What recruits do when off base is obviously not in the service's control however if you think the military doesn't screen its servicemen regularly for all such indiscretions then you are being naive. Good luck to your friend with being given flight status if he is indulging in such activity....

Forget the BS that he is trying to peddle here, any flier gets up against a DAP Test before flying. Hell, that kind of testing even takes place in Civvy Street whether for Aviators or Mariners.
Even Railway Drivers get checked nowadays defore commencing Duty Hours. Probably the only guys who are exempt are Rickshaw drivers and Tonga drivers!

Exactly what I was trying to say! If one thinks the military would be less strict than the civilians in this respect THEY are the ones smoking something....

The vast majority of crashes are of the aged aircrafts- once the Cheetak, Cheetah, MiG-21 and MiG-27 are out of service you will see the number of crashes fall through the floor. As these old aircraft don't have FDRs or CVRs naturally the exact cause of aircraft loss will go unknown because one can't say for certain without such basic information to hand.

The IAF's crash rate remains one of the lowest of any AF in the world no matter what the media wants to spout.

Let's take the example of the Mirage 2000.

Both India and Taiwan bought 60 planes. While the attrition in Taiwan was 5 planes, we have lost 10 in India.

Btw, Taiwan has had their planes 5 yrs longer than India.

We cannot just stick our heads in the sand and pretend that our training and maintenance is top notch.

eg. Taiwan bought 12 two seater Mirages for training while we bought 7. Just an example of their focus on training vs ours.

The training issue has hopefully been addressed with the Hawks.

Last 5 years India has had 10 military aircrafts involved in accidents.
While Pakistan 7...

India has double the number of flying machines than Pakistan.

Or shoddy HAL services, poor training from IAF due to lack of trainers (back then) and of course, metal fatigue due to service going far beyond their lives.

Freak cases are like the C-130J that recently crashed. It was brand new.

That seems more like sabotage.

Cant say about hercules. But rest of crashes come from Mig 21 and jaguar junk.
Pakistan is facing same problem with its mirages. I hate it too.
Luckily we enjoy better maintenance and upgrades to F7(our Mig21) while russians are notorious for providing support of there tech.
And the Su30 crash was probably due to maturing tech and lack of training. Similar to the one JF17 crash.

The IAF operates 27 different types of aircraft managing such a vast spread of fleet comes with its own challenges. current fleet includes six types of fighters, eight types of helicopters, 5 models of transporters and three type of trainers So The aircraft has the highest crash rate as it is the most flown also. The defence ministry's expert committee, in its report running into five volumes, went into every aspect of flight safety and looked into all the components of the aircraft. The Indian Air Force bringing down its rate of accidents to the lowest ever in 2012-13 is good news. But the safety record of the IAF can be taken to the next level only when the modernisation of its squadrons is complete. Perhaps just as important is an improvement in the quality of the aircraft being manufactured by the public sector HAL.

Its really sad that we dont have an advanced air crash investigation technology. We have a large fleet of planes and are one of the largest air force in the world and so many crashes but we have failed to get the technology to investigate. Comparing the accident records with others is not the solution.
