I would call our country 'Buddhist India': PM Modi

Do he knows Buddhism oppose the caste system? Dalits, Muslims should be equal to Hindustanist in the India.

he would know but will prefer not saying it.

two days ago, @The_Showstopper mentioned a brahmin king, pushyamitra sunga, who overthrew the maurya empire and then proceeded to wipe out all traces of buddhism in south asia.

and here we have modi from the bjp/rss government, the successors to the cruel pushyamitra, pretending to celebrate buddhism.

Hinduism is atheistic, agnostic, monotheistic and polytheistic.
Buddhism is atheistic and agnostic.
Jainism is agnostic.

so why don't you ask rss and bajrang dal the the bjp government at the center to demolish all those 500,000+ idolating temples in india??

things have to be simple, yes?? :)

and your profile picture is of bhagat singh, co-founder of the "hindustan socialist republican assocation" and true freedom fighter and revolutionary... would he agree with your views??

This is like saying Judaism, Christianity and Islam are the same as they share a similar tradition. But we know how wrong is that statement.
You read Upanishads,Buddhist tripitikas and Jainism books..you will know how close they are.

In Hinduism itself we have dvaita[which says God (paramatma) and living soul (jeevatma) are 2 separate entity ] and advaita [which says God and living soul are one and the same)..according to advaita we are all part of that great God and the dualism which appears in this world is just illusion.
Buddha says exactly the same thing. But he doesn't use the concept of Brahman(God)..he instead uses void..
For God's sake don't compare abrahamic religions to dharmic religions.

With all due respect to abrahamic religions for me they are just a bunch of stories concocted by some tribes...they don't have any philosophy apart from allurements of heaven and threats of hell..such stories are a product of simple minds who were leaving in deserts.

On the other hand, Jainism, buddhism,Upanishads, dvaita, advaita, vishistadwaita deal with a very high philosophy..they try to answer questions through sophisticated arguments and counter arguments...of course a common man may not be able to comprehend such complex philosophy..but that doesn't make them irrelevant..a common man can't comprehend many scientific formulas also... do they become redundant or irrelevant because of that?

Won't it be unfair to polytheist why should one force one ideals or beliefs system on another.

ooorreee babaa one more yaindoo saazish :pissed:
I don't consider it a good idea to paint everything hindu or hindu related. Let the distinct religions flourish, don't label them hindu just to please yourself. The Budhists nor the Jains like this behavior not to mention the Khalistani Sikhs.

Did you read up about that? Even Romila Thapar doesn't buy that account. The story from Ashokavadana is hardly reliable since the very same text also attributes exactly the same story to Asoka except that in that case the victims were the Ajivikas.

In any case, your assumption of Buddhism's demise because of such an action (even if true) are greatly exaggerated since the religion & its adherents survived & thrived for centuries after that, till Bakhtiyar Khilji came across the "wiped out" Buddhists nearly 1300 years after Pushyamitra Shunga had left the scene.

Obviously not if one is eating them. In any case, that is more Jain philosophy than Buddhist.

No, that logic does not hold. We consider Ganga water holy, does that mean we don't drink it? We consider the Earth holy, does it mean we stop walking on it or making practical use of it? It is a dharmic philosophy subscribed to by all dharmic religions. Only Jainism seek to give it an impractical interpretation which makes the religion more arduous to practice.

The concept of all life being holy is not in contention, the comparison with human life is. I stand by what I said. It was only the Jains who raised it to that level. Not the Buddhists.

i disagree with you Sikhism is a monotheists religion more close to Islam.

Hinduism is a big umbrella for many kind of philosophies .Hinduism has prominent and very respected branches which are monotheist. Hinduism not idol worship only although it does not prevent that like Islam.

Monoetheism in Vedas :

1. VEDIC MONOTHEISM : Vedic philosophy revolves round singularity of God. There is no mention of plurality of God in Vedas. Vedic religion is pure unadulterated Monotheism. According to Hoy Vedas, God is one, not many :
Verily He is one
Single, indivisible, supreme reality.
- Atharva Veda Verse No. 13/4/20

He is the sole sovereign
Of the universe.
- Rig Veda Verse No. 6/36/4

He is one, unparalleled
Through His wondrous, mighty
And formidable laws and deeds.
- Rig Veda Verse No. 8/1/27

There is only One
Who ought to be adored
By the people.
- Atharva Veda Verse No. 2/2/1

So you will be surprised to know that the concept of monotheism is not originated from Abrahamic religion. It existed 5000 years ago during the age of Rigveda

You will also be surprised to know that atheism is also a recognized and approved in Hinduism-

"Atheism (Sanskrit: निरीश्वरवाद, nir-īśvara-vāda, lit. "statement of no Lord", "doctrine of godlessness") or disbelief in God or gods has been a historically propounded viewpoint in many of the orthodox and heterodox streams of Hindu philosophies.----

Hinduism is a religion, but also a philosophy.[5][6] Among the various schools of Hindu philosophy,
Samkhya, Yoga and Mimamsa while not rejecting either the the Vedas or the Brahman ,[7] typically reject a personal God, creator God, or a God with attributes. While Samkhya and Yoga rejected the idea of an eternal, self-caused, creator God, Mimamsa argued that the Vedas could not have been authored by a deity."

The comparison with human life holds too. Only the impracticality of implementing it in toto that prevents it from being put in practice. Hinduism functions on the precept of Ahimsa which does not mean no harm, but least harm. If the conditions on Earth were such that humans could live without killing any plant or animal life, then killing any creature/plant would have been equally prohibited. On a practical level, we do not even consider humans equal distinguishing them as per their capacity, expertise, usefulness, etc.

There are some life considered holier than others. The Hindu approach to the cow is a good example. All things may be equal but some are more equal than the others.

Won't it be unfair to polytheist why should one force one ideals or beliefs system on another.

fairness would be the idea of peacefully and continually presenting to them the naturalness of moving away from the unnecessarily complicated and superstitious and ineffective way of polytheism... as example, and which i have presented a few times on pdf, did the abundant presence of much visited and old polytheist temples in nepal prevent 10,000+ people from dying in the earthquake??

I personally believe Universe is a Hologram and we are in a computer simulation

i believe the universe ( space ) to be a physical something that should be compulsarily traveled and something that will spiritually enhance humankind.

till Bakhtiyar Khilji came across the "wiped out" Buddhists nearly 1300 years after Pushyamitra Shunga had left the scene.

i don't know about that precise number ( 10,000 ) but this is what i read just now...

from ( The facts or mindblowing facts of Nalanda University - Quora )...
Nalanda was ransacked and destroyed by an army under Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1193.Bakhtiyar khilji Destroyed the university thinking that it as Fort of the empire.

a mistake, obviously... and buddhism is closer to islam... i consider buddha a prophet.

In any case, your assumption of Buddhism's demise because of such an action (even if true) are greatly exaggerated since the religion & its adherents survived & thrived for centuries after that

so why is andhra pradesh the further extent to the south, the region where buddhist structures are to be found while karnataka and tamil nadu are abundant in hindu temples and monasteries?? karnataka even has jain structures.

I might sound insane when I said Universe is a hologram but this contention is actually a scientific theory.

Look, I'm not arguing whether Bhakhtiyar Khilji made a mistake or not, the point was limited to addressing the question of whether Buddhism was totally wiped out by Pushyamitra Shunga since that would have precluded the chance of Messrs. Khilji & Co. finding them present there.

Btw, Buddhism has a strong streak of atheistic philosophy running through. Regardless of whether you personally would have considered the Buddha a prophet, not many other Muslims would have agreed.

Err...what is the point & what does it have to do with Pushyamitra Shunga?
