Benazir Bhutto said Rajiv Gandhi had failed to deliver on his promise to pull out troops from Siachen.

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistani premier Benazir Bhutto has claimed that it was because of her initiatives that militancy could end in Punjab in an assertion that marks the first-ever confession by a Pakistani leader of Islamabad's support to the Khalistani secessionists.

Retaliating against national security advisor M K Narayanan's charge that Bhutto, as premier of Pakistan, had failed to make good the promises she made, the PPP leader claimed that she had kept her word. Benazir said that she had fulfilled her assurance to Rajiv Gandhi to cut off Islamabad's support to Khalistanis.

The former Prime Minister, who was replying to questions by a news weekly, said the fact was that it was Rajiv Gandhi who failed to deliver on his promise to pull out troops from Siachen in exchange for Islamabad's choking off the support to Khalistani secessionists.

Pakistan's support to anti-India terror in Punjab was never a secret, but it is the first time that somebody as senior as a former prime minister of that country has acknowledged the plan to 'inflict a thousand cuts' on India to avenge the loss of East Pakistan.

NSA Narayanan had recently said that Bhutto could never be trusted as she had not kept her promises given to Rajiv Gandhi. Bhutto said Narayanan could not have known what transpired in 1988 because it was a one-to-one meeting.

"If anyone kept the word, it was I, not Rajiv. He (Rajiv) went back to India and then called me on his way to the Commonwealth to say that he could not keep his promise to withdraw from Siachen and that he would do it only after the 1989 election," Bhutto alleged. She said: "There was not a fly on the wall. How can anyone say I have not kept my promises when the single biggest result of that meeting was the end of the Sikh insurgency."

However, the man responsible for wiping out Khalistani secessionism, top cop KPS Gill, rubbished Bhutto's claim taking all credit for the containment of militancy in the bordering state. "No PM in Pakistan would have the stature to change the 'destabilize India' policy," he told TOI.

Interesting..

though the Standard response of
Pakistanis --> We were helping them fight oppression.
Indians --> We knew it all along they want to destabilize.
Pro-Khalistanis --> Pakistan is a natural ally
Anti-Khalistanis --> Pakistanis are upto mischief
Neutral --> Kids at play

Personally I admire Bhutto, for admitting support to terrorist(India)/Political(Pakistan) organizations involved in terror activities and helping to put an end to them and undo the wrong(??)

And of course, Miss Bhutto is the most truthful person on earth!

it seems to me that MS Bhutto is being attacked by these waste conspiracy. every one betrays her and she is the most innocent woman on earth. Has anybody here read the book deception. its about pakistans nuclear arsenal. in the whole book she keeps saying that she is not at fault. the taliban are a creation of Musharraf. it needs to be noted that we actually ( if we ever did) helped the taliban come to power was when MS Bhutto was in power. in the book she also says that everything that the army was doing she found out not by briefing from the army but by the US ambassador to paksitan. she also contends that the pakistani army completely out of the loop in everything. if this is truly the case then she herself is admitting that she is a pathetic leader and should not actually come in power when she cant control any aspect of the military or foreign policy.

Hi,

Whatever you guys might believe, it is the truth and nothing but the unholy truth---she did it----and guess who was the person charged to give the list of khalsas to the indians---Aitzaz Ahsan.

Her bitterness is that Rajiv used her very well " every which way "---she was taken for a ride----the position of financial strength that pakistan is in right now----and the political backing the Benazir has of the west---she is their blue eyed daughter right now----india would never want to see her in power.

She has some old scores to settle with india----with a financially broke pakistan, she could do nothing----with a financially stronger pakistan---it is a different story.

I am not a Benazir fan---I never thought that I would be saying this today, but mark my words---if she gets in power----there will be some verbal fireworks and india maynot come out ahead.

Benazir has the ability, the capability, the resources, the backing and support of the west, she has developed into her father's true daughter---she has so much " larceny" built into her, she would be devastating to her opposition.

Only if she had not made that statement about handing AQ Khan and opening pak border to u s forces---there would have been nothing in her way too stop her.

Mastan,

I hope you are right. Thus far she has put on nothing but a self-serving show to get herself back in the PM's office. There was once a time that most of the Pakistanis hoped for able leadership from her but that was not to be...with so many favors owed to so many if she gets into the PMs office this time around, I think she will be disappointing again!

I wonder if she will keep India on the backfoot, especially since she is the 'darling' of the US and US has great stakes in India on various fronts!

This is unfortunately our history. Our politicians wasted every opportunity to take revenge from India.:angry:

pls note R-Ghandi is not amongst us to say what really happened!. i for one dont believe in her claims!

Rajiv gandi is ka payo tha na jo woh apni baat per kaim rahta. He used her and used her well. I must admire the guy. One thing that bothers me is why has she never been charged of treason? Or does the word treason has some different meaning in our dictionary.
Indians still doesnt trust her. give me a break here. Is this some kind of a plot to make her win again the hearts cashing anti indian sentiments.
US will not do a damn thing. There interest clearly lies with india. As for her being the darling of the west well that only extends to her cooperation in rolling back the nuclear programe of pakistan, giving excess to Dr.Qadir and opeining boders for the US forces. And for this she will be rewarded with hot cash and cash is only thing what attracts the beautiful couple. They migh even give Zardari 10% of evey military action taken in pakistan and to extend his cooperation.
This is the only reason, i really dont feel like casting my vote in favour of musharraf. Come on man what was he thinking when he went for national reconciliation. He says pakistan comes first, i am unable to understand bringing her back, taking the cases back, how does that help pakistan. Infact you are giving her another opportunity to make sure that last time pakistan survived, this time it doesnt.

MOds note: sorry for my first line in urdu, it couldnt be expressed in a better way.

But her statement is wonderfully timed (also convenient since it cannot be verified since Rajiv Gandhi is dead and so cannot give his version) to garner votes from the anti Indian lobby that finds Musharraf being too cosy with India!

Anti Indian sentiments do pull in votes!
