Huawei to set up $500m plant in India

So, what shall we call the products? Made in India or made in China?

If they are “Made in India”, as they should apparently be, and if they have higher value/price ratio, I believe the big-hearted Chinese will embrace that without a problem if they are to be sold in China. There are Japanese cars all over the place in China.

Another interesting thing is that, obviously if it is made in India, mostly it is designed in China at least for the core part. China goes an echelon high: a good move for China.

Huawei has a lot of patents. If there is intellectual property dispute, we’ll see how India government handles that.

I think 'made' in common parlance still means 'manufactured'. As such it will definitely carry a Made in India label. Thats true for Suzuki, GM and Hyundai cars as well.

It may be called conceptualized in China. Credit should go wherever deserved. But again, the article mentioned that Huawei also has a R&D center in Chennai; so we cant really be sure about that. As I said, for a global company its very hard to trace the true origins of a product. With so many cross-functional and cross-geographic teams on a product, one cant really pin-point one location and attribute the product to that location.

NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecom company by revenue and customers, has ended its dependence on western vendors by awarding China’s Huawei a part of the telecom gear contract to supply 3G equipment.

Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland-headquartered Nokia Siemens Networks have been Bharti’s exclusive telecom gear partners in India since early 2000. Ericsson manages Bharti's networks in 15 circles while Nokia Siemens handles the rest. So far, the Indian operator has signed five major outsourcing deals each with these companies. India has 22 telecom circles.

The Chinese equipment major will provide 3G equipment to Bharti in 3 circles, an executive aware of the development told ET. Huawei will also manage and maintain Airtel’s networks in these regions, the executive added.

On Monday, Bharti said that it had chosen Ericsson India, Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei Technologies as network partners to launch 3G services in India without divulging details. Another executive aware of the contract said that Ericsson would supply equipment in seven circles and Nokia Siemens in three.

As per industry estimates, Bharti’s contract size will be to the tune of $700 million, but company executives declined to comment.

Bharti has some experience of working with other equipment vendors. It had earlier awarded the contract to build, maintain and manage its networks in Sri Lanka to Chinese equipment major Huawei after a competitive bidding process.

In the 3G auctions that ended in May, Bharti Airtel had bagged third generation (3G) airwaves that allows it to offer high-end services such as video conferencing and ultra fast internet on mobiles in 13 of the 22 telecom circles in the country.

It had paid around Rs 12,300 crore for these airwaves. The company is expected to rollout 3G services by late December. This deal comes within two days of Sistema Shyam choosing China’s Huawei and ZTE along with Ericsson to manage its networks across India.

The two Chinese vendors are also learnt to have bagged the contract to rollout 3G services for Reliance Communications across 13 circles. Earlier this month, Tata Teleservices had said that Huawei would implement the initiation of 3G services for the company in five circles while Nokia Siemens Networks has bagged the contract for the remaining four circles.

The combined deal size for the Tatas is just under $300 million, an industry executive tracking the equipment contracts said.

For Ericsson and NSN, this marks their second major 3G contract in India. As reported earlier by ET, an industry executive with direct knowledge of the development have confirmed that Vodafone Essar has awarded a 3G equipment order worth about $500 million with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens, who are its existing vendors.

An analysis by ET reveals that global telecom equipment vendors will garner some $3 billion in the first wave of 3G rollouts in India, making India the largest market for gear makers in 2010.

That was fast. Huawei India's announcement of the building of a $500 million plant only came out one or two days ago. And the contracts start rolling in? If Huawei had known that there was a quid pro quo, they would probably have built the $500 million plant in India a long time ago.

"Chendusudise," it is simply a matter of modern business practice to place a plant in the home country of a major customer. That is just the way it is.

China offers the best tech and best chance for California to make a profit from this investment.
But given the anti-Chinese political atmosphere in US now, won't they deport the Terminator back to Austria if he dares to choose China ?

We have seen this Sino-American dance on a prior occasion.

China has the best tech because she invested billions of dollars into HSR technology. China is $2.4 trillion-dollar cash-rich in forex reserves and can offer financing on attractive terms. The real negotiations will center around the number of American jobs and manufacturing facilities that China is willing to commit on this project.

The article shown below is a likely outcome of the Sino-American negotiations for 380 km per hour Chinese 380A HSR in America.

The U.S. Renewable Energy Group and A-Power Energy Generation Systems, Ltd. Launch Final Development Phase of Jointly Owned 600 MW Wind Farm

Wednesday, April 28 2010

Las Vegas, NV – The U.S. Renewable Energy Group (US-REG) and A-Power Energy Generation Systems, Ltd. (NASDAQ: APWR) today celebrated the launch of the final development phase of its jointly owned 600MW wind farm with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism in Las Vegas, NV.

In October of last year, US-REG, in partnership with A-Power and Cielo Wind Power, announced the largest-ever Chinese and American joint investment in renewable energy with the construction of a 600 megawatt wind farm in Texas. In part as a result of that project, A-Power set forth plans to build a major wind turbine production and assembly plant in Nevada. American Nevada Company executives were also in attendance at the celebration with respect to the planning for the proposed Nevada facility.

Major executives and public officials participating in the ceremony hosted by US-REG Managing Partner Cappy McGarr included U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Party Secretary Zeng of the People’s Municipal Government of Shenyang, Vice Mayor Yang Yazhou of the People’s Municipal Government of Shenyang, Chief of Staff to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, David Krone, US-REG Managing Partner Ed Cunningham, A-Power Chief Operating Officer John Lin, Cielo Wind Power CEO Walt Hornaday, and American Nevada Company Chairman Brian Greenspun.

“Secretary Salazar is a leader in the development of America’s renewable energy industry, and we are grateful to have his support as we embark on one of the largest wind energy projects ever developed in the United States. We are inspired by Secretary Salazar’s dedication to steering our nation toward a new energy economy that will create thousands of jobs and improve America’s energy security,” said Cappy McGarr, US-REG Managing Partner. “Each of the executives and public officials here today share the common goal of creating a clean energy future for the people they represent. China and the U.S. must and will work together to tackle the issues facing future generations.”

The planned assembly and production facility would be expected to employ approximately 1,000 Nevada workers and create hundreds of additional jobs during construction. On completion, the plant would act as A-Power’s primary wind turbine hub in the United States, supplying equipment for a number of projects in North and South America, including the 600 megawatt joint venture wind project in Texas that will bring clean electricity to approximately 180,000 American families.

“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was instrumental in advocating for the state of Nevada and its renewable energy workforce,” said Ed Cunningham, US-REG Managing Partner. “Leader Reid’s strong commitment to clean, renewable energy has put Nevada at the forefront of America’s renewable energy sector, and the strength and sophistication of its renewable energy workforce made Nevada the ideal location to construct the wind energy production and assembly plant."

yes,a business to help our enemy will doom to failure

Generally you cant keep the technical advantage against other competitors by stopping them getting it,but to do better than your competitors which means to have more Research and Dvelopment investment and more innovations. What Huawei needs to prove is not to decide where to set the developing centre but make more innovations. If India is not a good place for investment,Huawei will leave soon.Plus currentlly Indians are not our primary target.
