Most Peace Keepers in the World - Pakistan

Why would media prase such acts of pakistan, all they can see is our nukes falling into the wrong hands. If anyone has seen this movie Black Hawk Down, it was the PA that went there and rescured the americans, but that all was neglected and only the americans were shown heros. Musharraf in his book has also criticisied on this bias neglecting of the important role played by pakistan army there.

Why should not the media praise what is good as it demolishes what is bad?

Yes, why?

All nations praise their own, even when it is done by others.

What's new?

One must learn to appreciate and understand the verities of existence as a world and not whimper!

Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone!

What is the connection between UN Peacekeeping and Terrorism?

The point is - what Pakistan has done to curb terrorism and other related matters compare to other countries.

The connection is that you cannot be a saint if you are devil, you can only be one thing at a time. The true image of Pakistan was & is wrongly presented by media.

All they can see is our nukes falling in the wrong hands nothing else ( as said before).

True.

But every country claims that they are fighting terrorism.

If it is the US' Global War of Terror, then indeed Pakistan is in the forefront.

Pakistan is in a unique position as far as the US Global War on Terror.

Because Osama took refuge in Afghanistan and because the Mujahideens were launched against Soviet troops in Afghanistan from Pakistan, Pakistan became the focal point of these people, who then went wild and out of control and engulfed Pakistan and Afghanistan along the Durand Line.

This scourge had to be cleared lest the vermin gnawed the innards of Pakistan. Therefore, it was only natural for Musharraf to join the US Global War on Terror. It is a war that Pakistan is fighting for her own needs and is misconstrued by some that Pakistan is fighting the US' GWOT as a proxy.

While it is commendable that Pakistan is contributing to UN Peacekeeping as also fighting alongside in the US Global War on Terror, Bangladesh, India are also combating terrorism and at the same time contributing to the Peacekeeping efforts. In fact, the sub continent is contributing maximum inspite of the heavy demand on troops for its own security against terrorists.

That is correct that the prism is scattering light in many directions.

Yes, all are worried, including those in Pakistan, that the nukes don't fall into the hands of terrorists.

It would be wrong to surmise that the terrorists are a bunch of illiterate malcontent.

There are many educated people, including professionals of various fields, amongst their ranks. These people can cause havoc if the nukes fall into the hands of the terrorists and their leader orders these professional to devastate the world.

Given the animosity of these terrorist to the established govt of Pakistan, it could be the first target of theirs, being in their proximity as also having sleeping sympathisers within Pakistan.

If I were a Pakistani, I, too, would be worried.

Well, if you go to Pakistan you will see that hardly anyone is worried. If these people get our Nukes it will not be bad, just for the rest of the world, even for us it would be terrible. So why would we let anything like this happen? And where did this whole scene of our nukes falling into the wrong hands come from?

They occupy less then 1% of Pakistan's land, heck there are probably the same number of people in India who are radicals. The communists which your president said are the biggest threats to India, we don't see indians worrying about their nukes, well that is because they are a small force and will be very unlikely for them to obtain such things.

Same goes for Pakistan, its all the stupid west media, it was probably a joke or a attempt to create a story and the whole world has picked up on it.

One is right to feel that it would be also terrible for Pakistan if the nukes fell into wrong hands.

However, the apprehension is not totally misplaced, if I may say so, because if the President of the country, who was also the Chief of the Army can have assassination plots that implicate air force personnel, then there is a genuine fear that even the security forces could have been infiltrated.

Further, owing to the religious reasons, many do not feel that there are terrorist and instead feel that these persons are merely agitating against the American intervention and nothing more. These very persons would turn a Nelson's eye if the terrorists did indeed attempt to steal the nukes, giving the terrorists the benefit of doubt be because of fierce nationalistic fervour or because of religious fire in the belly!

At the same time, I understand that it hurts the national sentiments when such apprehensions are displayed by foreigners.

Whatever, some action that reassures both within and without Pakistan is the need of the hour,

All I can say is that the concerns you have mentioned above are some of the exact same things that the Americans have brought up to the National Command Authority in the past. Although I can't provide specifics, there has been plenty of content made available that addresses issues such as threat of insiders or people having sympathies with crackpots on the outside and in turn, turning a blind eye to nuclear theft.

Currently the Pakistani nuclear arsenal is in better shape (in terms of security than most others including some in Europe) because of the scrutiny around the exact same reasons that you have pointed out and due to working with the US on the nuclear safeguards. The US side came back with a set of "best practices" with regards to nuclear security and Pakistani NCA took those BPs and internalized them.

In terms of action, for those interested in understanding some of these issues, they can listen to no less than the Director Strategic Plans Division, Air Commodore Khalid Benuri talk in depth about the perceptions, threats and what all that has been done to address the threats (dealing with perception is always the harder part) at the following:

The more the content of this interview gets around the better in my own opinion.

Thanks Blain2.

Your post makes me feel a wee bit comfortable!

Anyway, who is Blain1?

Just curious!

I was Blain1 in a previous life. Too long a story to pen (I mean type) here. As far as I know, Blain1 no longer exists

BTW, I hope more than my post, the interview is what people see. One of the best ones that I have seen from the folks on the NCA side.
