Russia itself sells many defense equipments including submarines and planes to Vietnam. SO no issue.

Russia may sell directly for its own national interests, but to let a third party use its tech for the purpose, is a completely different ball game. we will see how it goes. Its a developing story.

they got leverage in Russia.. regardless of chinese trade they got support from Russia all time.. higher than mountains deeper than oceans may also change in future... but today you got chinese back up even Trade with India is higher than Trade with pakistan..

self defeat in what sense.. My comparison is true.. regardless Indo-china trade.. china sell weapons to pakistan despite Indian objection.. both cases are same .. Russia-china trade is huge although Russian -Vietnam relation pretty strong...

Dynamics of that region is completely different to South Asia.

Russian bilertal relations with Vietnam are no issue. The issue is when a thrid party, India, selling a rebranded Russian product to Vietnam which may go against Chinese interests, that is where the interest lies.
