How can India be a superpower if it can't even build a bridge?

If I were in India, I would totally sue that suresh kalmadi for damaging India's and indians reputation. I don't have to win, but at lease they'll know their countrymen care. But no worries, I would return to India next year, if no one takes up, I'll.

A lawyer has filed a number of cases on CWG authorities including Kalmadi. He has spoken about it in CNNIBN yesterday.

BJP warns India faces games humiliation

India’s Hindu nationalist opposition has strongly attacked the Congress-party led government for putting the country’s global standing in jeopardy by failing to rescue ramshackle preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

As some national teams delayed their arrival in Delhi after a walkway collapse and accusations flew surrounding “filthy” conditions in the athletes’ village, the Bharatiya Janata party pointed to the disarray surrounding the games as evidence of the government’s weak leadership.

Venkaiah Naidu, a BJP leader, told reporters on Wednesday that the government was close to causing humiliation for India. “National prestige was involved but the government is unmoved,” he said.

Mr Naidu appealed for Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, to reassure the international community that the Delhi games would be a success and stem the number of top athletes deserting the championship. “Please do not put the nation to shame by your casual and careless approach,” he implored.

Some political analysts said embarrassment over the games could be damaging to Mr Singh at a time when his government was being criticised for inertia and struggling to quell violence in Kashmir, India's northernmost state.

The games were in the balance on Wednesday night after several teams said they were reviewing their preparations in light of mounting health and safety concerns. A number of countries are setting up training camps in nations such as Qatar and Malaysia and plan to ferry their athletes to India from there.

England’s swimming team flew to Doha, the Qatari capital, on Wednesday. The Australian team is using Kuala Lumpur as its pre-games base.

With the opening ceremony for the event scheduled for October 3, team officials and the Commonwealth Games Federation have castigated organisers over the condition of the accommodation, expected to house 8,000 athletes and officials. Scotland’s team officials are delaying the departure of their athletes, while Wales has set a deadline of Wednesday evening for organisers to provide safety guarantees.

Mike Fennell, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, is due in New Delhi today to discuss final preparations with Mr Singh. Sir Andrew Foster, chairman of Commonwealth Games England, told the BBC that the next 48 hours would decide whether the big teams attended the games.

India’s preparations have been hit by allegations of corruption, mismanagement and an absence of leadership.

The latest woes have persuaded some top athletes to withdraw from the games. Dani Samuels, Australia’s world champion discus thrower, said she had decided to miss the games as she feared for her life should she visit Delhi.

Indian officials were insisting that it was too early to pass judgment on what was intended to be a showcase event.

“Why are we all concluding that the games are a failure even before they have started?" asked Sheila Dikshit, Delhi’s chief minister.

How can India be a superpower if it can't even build a bridge?

There have been approximately 7-13 bridge failures in USA in the last 10 years alone. So apparently by your logic, USA is not a superpower!

Commonwealth Games 2010: British parts in collapsed bridge under scrutiny

Indian government officials claimed that Tuesday's collapse of a footbridge near the Commonwealth Games Stadium, which left 27 people injured, could have been caused by the failure of components supplied by a British company.

The incident is the most serious of a host of problems to have hit the Games preparations. Five of those hurt are said to be in a critical condition.

A spokesman for New Delhi's Public Works Department, who was present when the bridge fell, said: "The first two pairs of clamps of Macalloy bar suspenders, imported from Britain, broke and there was a progressive failure of the remaining 11 pairs, resulting in the collapse".

Macalloy's managing director, Peter Hoy, told Telegraph Sport that the company had supplied components for the bridge and a company representative was helping investigators with their inquiries.

"We have got components on the bridge, they are some components of many parts, and at the moment there is no indication what caused the collapse," he said.

It is understood that engineers usually prop up structures such as the bridge with piles until the work is completed, but that appears not to have happened in this case, as workers were laying concrete on the bridge at the time it fell.

The Indian company in charge of the footbridge, P & R Infraprojects, which also developed the main stadium and the netball and velodrome facilities, has been prevented by the Indian government from obtaining future public works contracts until the reason for the collapse is established.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit attempted to play down the seriousness of the bridge collapse. "These minor glitches do happen," she said. "Something maybe dripping, some tile may collapse, it doesn't mean the entire Games are bad."

Dikshit said the authorities had decided not to rebuild the bridge and would instead create a new path for the spectators to enter the venue. She confirmed that compensation payments would be made to those hurt in the bridge collapse.

This isn't exactly the bridge over the Yangtze or Ganges or the San Francisco bridge. Its a piddling little bridge which, nevertheless, carries a lot of prestige value for India. The whole CWG is a nightmare. I have never heard of a superpower make such a mess of things. Yes bridges do collapse but the whole CWG project is a failure even before it started. Bangladesh is aligning itself with a mere wannabe.

hehehe someone used the word Indian superpowerhood :P bollywood, tollywood come on guys

90% of your border is with India and the other country is Burma. Bangladesh can do what the hell it wants, but it cannot change geography and esp. when your country is eaten away by Bay of Bengal annually.
