HAZARIBAG: Years ago, when Kanti Lakra converted from Hinduism to Christianity and adopted the surname Kerketta, little must her family have realized that the consequences would follow her to the grave.

Kanti's body lay at her home in Kesura village in Hazaribag for more than 36 hours as first a Hindu crematorium and then four churches refused her husband to perform the last rites. The 60-year old had died of kidney failure on August 12 at the Hazaribag sadar hospital.

DSP Ratneshwar Thakur said Kanti's husband, Shiv Prakash Ram, first decided to bury the body as per Christian tradition at the village burning ghat because there was no cemetery there. However, the villagers stopped him from digging a grave. The DSP said they told Ram that they could only allow a Hindu funeral at the ghat and advised him to cremate his wife as he was the only Christian in the village.

"We can't allow burial of a body in the burning ghat although Ram could have carried out the last rites as per Hindu norms," said Balram Mahato, the village head.

Ram then decided to bury her body in his own orchard, but this, too, was opposed by Hindus. "The villagers refused to let Ram use his residential plot as a graveyard because the house has an old Shiva temple," a police source said.

Ram finally approached the cops and met officer Arvind Kumar Singh and a police team visited the village to help him find a suitable space for the grave. But the team failed to convince the villagers and the police had to approach higher authorities in the district for a solution.

Finally, DSP Thakur and a magistrate were sent to the village as the body required to be disposed at the earliest. They asked four churches, Church of North India, Gossner Evangelical Lutheran Church, Society Of God and All God Church, in Hazaribag and adjoining areas for space in any of their cemeteries, but all four disallowed burial of a person who had converted to Christianity.

"The family adopted Christianity under CNI and we cannot allow him to use our graveyard for burial of his wife," said Mukund Barla, pastor of GEL Church. When Ram approached CNI, authorities there refused as well saying she belonged to a different village.

After 36 hours, the administration found a plot on a government land far from the Kesura burning ghat. Thakur said the body was buried by Christian tradition on Wednesday amid strong police presence.

Indian is a very generic sense to describe the subject of the article? Do not you think same thing is not applicable in rest of the South Asia?...In India...Hindu people are always victimized in the policy level by the GOV to maintain the secular fabric of our nation...And apart from that there are loopholes in Hindu religion itself...So in a nutshell....if people feel victimized, then reaction will come from people of all religion...be in Hindu,Muslim or others too...So this is a basic nature of society...which is nothing specific to India itself...

.
India has an official policy of tolerating Islam. but its people, like the Indian members in PDF, might not be as tolerance. Hence, there is a disconnect and an appearance of being the least tolerant.

If India has the policy of force out Muslims and people follow through with it, the country might appear more tolerant as there is consistency.

.
In fact we are the most religious tolerant and no country in this and any known/unknown world can think about a country like India as far as religious, cultural or linguistic diversity is concerned...even our minority religion is bigger than your country in numbers for which religion you set up a seperate house! Only India can tolerate it!!

This is most unfortunate ...if report is true.

Even if it is true...in a country of billion people stray incident like this can happen. Not that I am justifying it .
Surprisingly the allegation of being Religiously intolerant comes from person from country like Pakistan which does not tolerate even people from their own religion.

It's height of hypocracy !!!

I'm always going to be skeptical when Chistianity is involved. It has been proven there is a lot of shady goings on wrt US-based "Christian" groups and India. They have engaged in some very dodgy news stories in the past.

Many of the traditional Christians here in India are also skeptical about them.. Using money, offering visa to US etc are some of the methods used by them to convert people.. There are a lot of NGO organisations that government should watch closely..

We shouldn't rule out things at face value . Stray incidents like that do happen. there are unscrupulous elements in all countries which bring bad name . Because there are always people poised to cherry-pick such reports and throw at our face.

But at the same time we don't have to brush everything under the carpet .

We know what horrible thing happened in Graham Stains case ...

If our basic nature as diverse- multi religious, multi cultural nation is to be maintained - we have to take all such incidents seriously !
As far as thread like this is concerned ....It's sign of intellectual bankruptcy ....

This thread just shows...there are persons who are quite happy in their world full of " delusions" and they come to international forum like this to sell their delusions. fortunately there are very few willing to buy these " delusions" ....
