This Punjab Govt is an embarrassment, rather than concentrating on real issues, it goes after nonsensical matters.

A simple cartoon would not really alter the faith of someone unless their faith is very weak, but in Pakistan many have weak faith so it is expected.

This is in the long list of unnecessary motions by the Punjab Gov through which nothing is achieved at the end.

LAHORE: The Punjab government has formed a committee which will present a report on the airing of cartoons depicting Hindu mythology and if they can be banned in Pakistan.
The committee is headed by Punjab government spokesman Senator Pervaiz Rasheed and comprises Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) Cultural Wing President and MPA, Farah Deeba, MPA Khawaja Imran Nazir and other officials.

Even though Indian TV channels are currently off-air in Pakistan, several cable operators are broadcasting Indian content to meet the demands of their clientele.

A meeting of the committee was held in Lahore, which discussed ways to get these cartoons banned in Pakistan.

Deeba, who attended the meeting, told The Express Tribune that participants had discussed “cartoons which glorified mythology characters such as Hanuman had a bad impact on the minds of the young children.

She said that “these cartoons were in contradiction with the teachings of Islam and young kids could not differentiate between what’s true and what’s not so these should be banned.”

Deeba said that the meeting was attended by bureaucrats and the information, culture and youth affairs department secretary was also present.

However, banning Indian cartoons is not in the Punjab government’s control. According to Deeba, “We have taken our notes but cannot ban these cartoons on our own as this is a federal subject. We will however approach the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority through the federal government to seek a ban on such cartoons,” she said.

According to the 1998 census, 1.6 per cent of Pakistan’s population is Hindu.

Eminent artist and former principal of Lahore’s National College of Arts Salima Hashmi questioned the decision to form a committee for this purpose.

“Why doesn’t the government make a committee to know the root cause of militancy and why doesn’t it set up committees to find reasons of young children becoming suicide attackers?” she questioned.

Hashmi said that in India the number of Muslims was greater than the number of Muslims in Pakistan, so if Muslim children in India were not affected by mythology cartoons, why would children in Pakistan be affected? Hashmi told The Express Tribune, “Isn’t there anything constructive that they can work on? Why waste time on setting up such committees and inquiring into such matters which are not pertinent in the current situation?”

The Government, especially the Punjab Gov does not consider public opinion when making decisions.

You will find that many people in Pakistan would oppose such moves staunchly, the people were and are for freedom of religion or anything else for that matter.

Sure there will be a few who will commend this but as you can see from the comments, many would be infuriated by this.

Weird. Dont Hindus in Punjab watch these channels? What if there were cartoons showing Islamic characters? Wouldn't they have a bad effect on the Hindu kids?

Last i checked all kids regardless of social standing watched Cahchoo Chaudhry and chotta bhim. Stop reading too much into things.

I saw an interesting little video where a little Pakistani Muslim kid was chanting "Om Nama Shiva" after picking it up from television - much to the chagrin of the TV host. Anyway - it is actually Pakistan's call - it is their country - if they want to ban cartoons, so be it.

The children of "Liberal" people as you named them, do not have to watch little hunuman cartoons. They rather go for some science fiction and computer related stuff.

Above all i do not see these cartoons made keeping in mind preaching of hinduism as something for worldwide entertainment of children from different societies.

I do not see anything wrong if these are banned because either these cartoons or for entertainment or learning something positive whereas teaching children hinduism through these cartoons and Islamism at home by their parents will only lead to a confused half baked mind.


I say better watch Tom and Jerry the best for all ages.

Publishing cartoons of Hindu dieties over the television network might aggravate the sentiments of some Hindus. The creators of the cartoons were Hindus too is another issue.

We are a Muslim people, and we do not depict (in either extollation or in desparagement) any person or figure that is regarded highly (or lowly) by any religion, we just leave them alone. Running the cartoons means abetting such a depiction.

For these reasons I'd support the cartoons not be run on the tele.

No, it depends more on the sect they belong to and the area they hail from. The kind of teaching that they are exposed to has a major impact on their belief.

You will find that most people are much more liberal in their thinking but they hold on to their cultural habits. The thing with the ones who have a streak of intolerance within them is that they are a lot more vocal.
