The train will run at a maximum speed of 200 km per hour

Passengers will soon be relieved of lengthy journeys between Dhaka and Chittagong, as a high-speed train service is going to be introduced on the route.

Once the service is introduced, the journey from the capital to the commercial capital – which currently takes six to seven hours – will take one and a half hours, or a maximum two hours..

Dubbed the “bullet train”, it will run at maximum a speed of 200 km per hour. Existing Bangladeshi inter-city trains run at a maximum speed of 70 km per hour.

Travelling in Europe by train is already faster than by plane; and neighbouring India is also moving towards travel by bullet train.

Now Bangladesh Railway has taken a project to launch a high-speed train by June 2022.

On May 31, the railway signed a deal with China Railway Design Corporation and Majumder Enterprise of Bangladesh—to conduct a feasibility study for, and design, the proposed high-speed train line.

Project Director Kamrul Ahsan said: “As per the agreement, the feasibility study and design will be completed by December 2019 at a cost of Tk102.10 crore. The Bangladesh government funded the work.”

Route plan and design

According to the plan, the proposed train will run through Narayanganj instead of via the Tongi-Bhairab route.

The existing Dhaka-Chittagong rail link is 320km long, but the proposed route length is 230km.

It moves to Chittagong from Dhaka through: Tongi, Narsingdi, Bhairab, Akhaura, Comilla, and Feni. The proposed route will go through Narayanganj and connect at Comilla or Lakhsam on the existing Dhaka-Chittagong route.

Railway Minister Mujibul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune: “The Dhaka-Chittagong rail-link is an important route. The existing length of the route is 320km—which will be set at 230km.

“The train will run at 200km speed and the travel time will be only one-and- a-half hours or a maximum two hours,” he added.

The Dhaka-Narayanganj section of the alignment will be constructed next to the existing rail line while the other alignment portion, from Narayanganj to Comilla, will be elevated.

Several bridges, including two large spans over the Shitalakshya and Meghna rivers, will also be constructed for the rail link, according to the plan.

Kazi Rafiqul Alam, additional director general (infrastructure) of Bangladesh Railway, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The Dhaka-Chittagong high-speed train project will be implemented under the government-to-government agreement with China at an estimated cost of Tk50,000 crore.”

Quick transportation can boost the economy

The Dhaka-Chittagong rail route is the part of the Trans-Asian rail network. The network will be connected to India’s Kolkata and Myanmar’s Gundam—which could link to China in future.

Bangladesh Railway is also implementing a project to upgrade from meter gauge line to dual gauge for Tk1,683 croreto provide transit to India, Nepal, and Bhutan—and increase trade with these countries.

The new route will hasten journeys between Dhaka and Chittagong, but also boost the economy because of efficient transportation of goods among the neighbouring countries.

“The high-speed train project is important as it will mobilize trade and tourism,” said railway official Rafiqul.

The railway has been facing losses for many years. It suffered a loss of around Tk1,853 crore in the last fiscal year, according to sources.

“The new route and high-speed train will help increase the earnings of the railway,” said Rafiqul.

Bangladesh is looking to enter the bullet train era as the government has already completed some preliminary works for constructing the Dhaka-Chittagong high speed rail line.

Yesterday, Bangladesh Railway (BR) signed a deal with a consortium of two companies for doing the feasibility study and detailed design for the first-ever high-speed train project.

Once the project is completed, the journey between the capital and the port city will take only two hours, which currently takes more than five hours.

The Tk 102 crore contract was signed between BR and the consortium of China Railway Design Corporation (CRDC) and Mazumder Enterprise (ME) of Bangladesh.

Established in 2003, ME is an integrated consulting, engineering and contracting services firm. The company has been involved with several big projects of the government, but this is its first in the rail sector, CEO Mohammed Jashim Uddin Chowdhury told The Daily Star. ME is working on feasibility studies involving Maddhapara Mine and Barapukuria Coal Mine.

The 18-month project will kick off within 15 to 20 days after the consortium mobilises their manpower, Quamrul Ahsan, director of the project, told The Daily Star after the signing ceremony at Railway Bhaban in Dhaka.

Quamrul signed the deal on behalf of BR while Liu Meichao, business manager, International Business Department of CRDC, represented the consortium.

Railways Secretary Mofazzel Hossain termed it a historic day for the railway sector.

With 320.79km length, Dhaka-Chittagong is the main business corridor of Bangladesh Railway, and at present, the railway route is a circuitous way through Tongi-Bhairab Bazar-Brahmanbaria-Comilla-Chittagong, the project documents show.

But the shorter route, which would be Dhaka-Comilla/Laksham-Chittagong, will cut short the length by about 91km, making the total length around 230km, Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque said. The expected speed would be above 200kmph and it would take from one and a half to two hours to reach Chittagong from Dhaka, he added.

He hoped that the government would find the financier for the project, as it did with China financing the Padma rail link project.

Bangladesh Railway Director General Amzad Hossain said the double-track rail line between Dhaka and Chittagong alone is not sufficient to address the growing demands. The high-speed rail track will resolve the issue, he added.

Talking about the economic importance of Dhaka-Chittagong route, he said initially they have decided to run freight trains on the route at night.

Under the contract, the consortium's responsibilities will include identifying alternative alignments, assessing the viability of the project, preparing detailed engineering design, and cost estimation. It will also work on environmental impact assessment and land acquisition.

i think they should spend money on industrial setup which will create more jobs and it will boost the other factors of economy too ..

. . . .
A complete waste of time and money. Instead of wasting money behind such expansive transportation system , govt should spend it to improve the existing infrastructure. How many people in BD would be able to afford to travel by these high speed train?

Those who wanna travel fast can already travel via plane. Why the f... would we need HST?

Actually this is necessary as it will link the two largest cities in BD with high speed rail for both passengers and cargo.
During the day people can be swiftly transported between the two cities and cargo can be moved at night.
Just the economic benefits of being able to move cargo back and forth between Dhaka and Chittagong port will make the project pay for itself. Let us not mention how much of a status symbol it would be for BD to have this fast railway in place - appearances count and BD will gain a positive reputation that will benefit the country economically.

I know it is hope against hope - but I really want to believe this. We have needed this for a long, long time.

i think they should spend money on industrial setup which will create more jobs and it will boost the other factors of economy too ..

There are one hundred SEZ's planned in Bangladesh (land acquisition almost completed) and one third of them are already past land-development phase. More than a dozen are large Export zone projects with factories already on them. Fast transport corridors (road/rail) are a must which is an adjunct to industrial development. Experts and management need to move around between business capital and industrial facilities and ports.

200 km in 7 hours?
Distance using new fast route is 230 KM. Design speed is 200 KMPH but in reality will be around 150 KMPH average. So time from Dhaka to Chittagong will be 1.5 hours.

A complete waste of time and money. Instead of wasting money behind such expansive transportation system , govt should spend it to improve the existing infrastructure. How many people in BD would be able to afford to travel by these high speed train?

Those who wanna travel fast can already travel via plane. Why the f... would we need HST?

Air travel has limitations on availability of leased planes as well as (let's face it) Bangladeshi weather. Train travel (provided the right of way can be secured properly and maintained extensively) is fast and relatively simple.

By the time one spends hours sitting in airport lounges, boarding and de-boarding procedures for airliners, taxiing to and from gates, travelling to and from airports faraway from city centers - 1.5 hours between city centers using fast train may not be that bad an idea, especially if fare is comparable.

Wuhan - Guangzhou, the distance is 1022 km. but the whole trip... it only takes 3 hours!

the price can be controlled by scale. The 1022 km high-speed train in China only needs 515 yuan (or less than 100 USD).

Or more cheap, 463 yuan. But it takes 4 hours.

High speed railway is better to strengthen regional economic ties. This is not what the plane can do. Wuhan explains everything.

Is high speed cargo trains a thing? Like its a bullet train but instead of carrying people they transport cargo around the country.

Cargo does not generally need to be transported at high speed, but the line primarily built for passengers during the day can be used to transport cargo between Chittagong and Dhaka during the night.

Dhaka-Ctg high speed trains to ferry 50,000 passengers daily
Minister says 2-hr travel time; new route to reduce distance as well

High-speed-train1.jpg

Over 50,000 passengers will be able to commute between the national capital and port city Chattogram daily in just two-hour time once high speed trains are introduced on Dhaka-Chattogram route, reports UNB.

In an exclusive interview, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque said recently that once the high speed trains are pressed into the service, expectedly by 2025, passengers on this route will be able to avail trains once every half an hour from 6 am till 10 pm.

The high speed trains will carry passengers from Dhaka to Chattogram and vice versa in just 1.5 to 2 hours' time costing Tk 1500 per passenger, said the minister.

Citing it as an important project for the country, the railways minister added that the trains will be similar to those operated in Europe, China, Japan and Korea.

Eight pairs of high-speed trains will shuttle between Dhaka and Chattogram, each containing ten coaches and two engines in front and back of the trains.

Each train can accommodate 800 passengers, with as many as 32 trips daily from Dhaka to Chattogram and vice versa.

Currently, eight pairs of trains commute on Dhaka-Chattogram route, accommodating 15,000-20,000 passengers daily. These trains generally take over five to six hours to cover the distance.

Now, railways minister said, the distance between Dhaka and Chattogram by rail is 321 km, but it would come down to 230 km after the construction of a new rail route, while the travel time will be something between 1.5 hours to 2 hours, with the high speed train moving as fast as 200 km per hour.

According to sources at Bangladesh Railway, the entire project will cost Tk 50,000 crore, which the Bangladesh government plans on completing with the help of a foreign donor.

They also said that an entirely separate rail line will be constructed in the Dhaka-Kumilla, Laksam-Chattogram route, which will be built over Feni and will conclude at a newly-built rail station just beside the existing station in Chattogram.

In a recent research report Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said that the new high-speed trains would generate demands for 60,000 passengers on Dhaka-Cumilla, 40,000 on Cumilla-Feni and 50,000 on Feni-Chattogram routes.

A contract to undertake feasibility study and detailed design regarding the project was signed between Bangladesh Railway and a Bangladeshi-Chinese consortiumonMay 31 between China Railway Design Corporation (CRDC), China and Mazumder Enterprise (ME), Bangladesh Consortium (CRDC-ME Consortium).

The railways minister said the Tk. 102 crore study will be completed within the next 18 months.

On completion of the feasibility study and detailed design plan, railway sources said that the government will approve the Development Project Proposal (DPP) by 2020, and seek for donor to finance the project.

Related tenders will be floated for contractors within this period.

Necessary land acquisition for the new rail line and station will also commence, which will run parallel to the other aspects and conclude by 2021.

It will take three to four years to complete the entire project, with rail sources estimating the project to be completed by 2024-25.

We have the ability to build "land fleet" in Bangladesh.

Wuhan has the first high-speed train in 2009, so it only takes 10 years!
Good god....that looks amazing.

Main one is full of sh!t with Hasina bashing.

On topic......this is a good initiative.
Now Bangladesh Railway has taken a project to launch a high-speed train by June 2022.
Hopefully it will be done by 2030. And it is fine, if it gets done by 2030. 200km/hisn't exactly bullet train...but for BD it surely iis. BD is small. So it wouldn't need a 400km/h trains....although I wish I could see a maglev operating in BD before my death.
