BBC News - Heroes' welcome for Afghan Twenty20 cricket team

The Afghan cricket team have returned home to a heroes' welcome after winning the qualifying competition in Dubai for the ICC World Twenty20.

Hundreds of fans from across the country travelled to the airport in Kabul to greet the players with drums and the national dance.

The cricketers were taken to a hotel in the city for more celebrations.

Team captain Nooroz Mangal thanked the supporters and expressed hope that the team would now get a decent ground.

'International standard'

So popular are the players that a bank promised each player a new car while a private airline has said it will present a $20,000 gift to the team.

But some players complained that in the past such promises have not been met - they have expressed fears that neither the money nor the car keys will actually materialise.

It was a good occasion for team captain Nooroz Mangal to repeat his plea for an "international standard" cricket ground in Afghanistan.

The country still lacks a single international sport ground.

Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates has now been named as Afghanistan's "home ground" for one-day internationals and first-class cricket after the team qualified there for the 2010 World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies, starting on 30 April.

Cricket became popular among Afghan refugees living in Pakistan during the 1980s and 90s.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board was formed in 1995. Like all sports, cricket was originally banned by the Taliban, but was granted an exception by them in 2000.

The Afghanistan Cricket Federation was elected as an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) the following year.

It is the first time in cricketing history that an affiliate member has qualified for a major tournament. Afghanistan has been placed in Group C with India and South Africa.

i can't say about Bangladesh but i feel this Afghanistan team has the potentian to become World Champians one day

Bangladesh has also improved a lot but still there is a long way to go

It was really exciting to follow the Af team's dream run. I had become a big fan of them. To top up the 20-20 success, they had successfully chased massive fourth inning total in the 4 day match against Canada. Well done!!

P.S.: Rumor has it that couple of their fast bowlers hit 150+ pretty frequently.. Can anyone confirm it?

LOL that shows how good is street cricket in Pakistan :D

Afghan cricketers charged up for World Twenty20

DUBAI: Afghanistan will be going to the Twenty20 World Cup in West Indies to do more than just meet their heroes... they want to beat them, teenage wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad has warned.

The Afghans, who qualified for their first major ICC tournament earlier this month, have been drawn with the current top two test-playing nations, India and South Africa, for the first round of the April 30-May 16 tournament.

Although they will be competing against players they have previously idolised from afar, Shahzad said the Afghans would not be cowed by big-name reputations in the Caribbean.

“We have great respect for them, so obviously we will be very keen to prove ourselves against those two teams,” the big-hitting 18-year-old told Abu Dhabi's The National newspaper.

“It's cricket and anything can happen, especially in T20. We have seen Ireland knock Pakistan out of the 2007 World Cup and we have beaten Ireland so many times.

“So it all comes down to how you play - reputations don't matter on the field. We have a very good team for T20 and our confidence is high. We are not going to the West Indies to socialise, we want to make our nation proud.”

Shahzad, who hit an unbeaten 214 as Afghanistan made 494 to beat Canada in a first class match in Sharjah earlier this month, said a personal highlight would be playing against India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the opening match in St Lucia on May 1.

“Dhoni is my favourite player and I am really looking forward to playing against him,” he said of his fellow wicketkeeper.

“I don't like Dhoni just because he is a great cricketer, I like him because he is a wonderful human being.

“I have not had an opportunity to meet him until now, but this is one thing I have always dreamt about. Now I will be getting this opportunity in the West Indies.”

Shahzad and his team mates were feted by flag-waving crowds when they arrived back in Kabul on Thursday.

“Every time we return home, we are given a grand welcome,” Shahzad told the paper.

“We have seen 25,000 to 30,000 people come to receive us at the airport. So their love and prayers have a great motivating effect on the team.

“It is the reason why we want to keep winning - to bring joy to their lives and, God willing, we will do more of that in the West Indies.”

Great show.....hope to see India-Afghan match one day.

Why hope?

It is inevitable.

They are in the same group with India and South Africa.

We will be playing the group match against Afghan's on 1st May 2010.

Heroes' welcome for Afghan Twenty20 cricket team

They deserve it.

Unlike teams like Canada,UAE,Hong Kong the Afghan team is 100% pure made of Afghan players.

While teams like Canada,UAE,Hong Kong are courtesy of Non Residential Indian,Pakistani,Caribbean (Canada) players.

Afghan's chased 490+ against Canada in a recent test. Its a big deal in their league (Non Test playing countries) as nobody even in Test playing countries have achieved this feat.

Ask Bangladesh to win a test against an 'A' Class team first.

by 2012-2015 give the Bangladeshi's test status to Afghanistan. They will truly deserve it then.

I have been following Afghanistan progress for last two years ... the way they have played since Division 5 its simply cannot be mentioned in words... A good suggestion for Afghan players is to play a few 20-20s with Pakistan before going to WI.. as this will give them ample practice against better teams and as for Pakistan they will be able to host matches and will have practice also !

Afghanistan has one of the best winning ratio including the test nations.............. if they keep playing like that i wouldn't be surprised if they soon get the test status and play against countries like Pakistan or Australia

Good to see Afghanistan in cricket. I wonder what would happen if all of their players would be like Younus Khan -

If they are like Afridi then God bless other teams :P
