Hambantota Port: Joint venture between China and Sri Lanka begins operations

Good luck for that...but i was under impression Chinese will be shifting more trade through Gwadar Port using CPEC.?
That route is very important for China's great wild west, especially Xinjiang region, which is the world's farthest place to the sea from all directions.

Hahaha nice spin. How come no Sri lankan members in this thread dancing if it was so good deal. Obviously the Chinese will be happy, great strategic deal for them, kudos. But others jumping to long live China-Sri lanka, this that is great optics for one's self respect
If it is not a good deal what's your plan to develop that port?

Its a win win for both. For one, its a very good deal, for other, a major lesson to be learnt. The spectators can learn a bit too.

So Gwadar will be used for Chinese western region and srilanka port will be used for eastern region ?

You seem to be a reasonable chap, it's just a geopolitical game. Win some lose some, important thing to keep on playing till the end.

You need to ask yourself this question, what is the intention of the Chinese, is it really a base in Hambantota?

SL played right into chinese hands in this deal

Even the 1.1 billion the the chinese spent was spent on chinese goods and labour and hardly helped the SL economy and in the end china got a port for free :cheesy:

That being said, India did force SL to ensure that the SECURITY of the port was in SL hands and NOT in chinese hands.

Which means any and all ships that enter the port will have to be cleared by SL first. So whatever your "intentions" is, you have been check mated.

Its a win for china, no doubt. And a face palm moment for SL.

And its a warning to the rest of the world about the nature of chinese "investments".

Its the new East India company.

.

Well, you need to understand China can never enter nor dock in SL territory without SL permission, current SL administration is playing neutral and appeasing both sides but what makes you think Rajapaksa won't come back to power? Never count the chicks before the eggs hatch, it's a 99 year lease... we play a longggg game.

There must be a big gain in this deal for the Sri Lanka government, otherwise it would simply won't allow it to happen. Had India offered a better deal, Sri Landka would've gone for India. so the fact is very clear, India can't provide anything better than the Chinese.

We get it. There is a saying here 'Bhima always loses the first round.' Keep that in mind. :-)

SL need to pay 6 billion to china from last project...how can they say no to china...they are in trap now

LOL.... you are not the only person who plays the loonggg game

Irrespective of who comes to power, SL has woken up to the danger of chinese investment and since its a democracy, there is nothing more china can do.

SL will learn from its mistakes and be extra cautious now.

Why would India offer SL ANY deal ? :cheesy:

They walked into this trap of their own free will and its for them to walk out of it.

Either way India will protect its interests.

Yup, there is still a long way to go for 99 years. Well, it is not a danger if SL managed those assets properly, Hambantota port was a commercially viable port, the airport was a Rajapaksa vainity project which even we do not want equity. And India is smart enough to pay 300mil$ for it to counter China.

Nobody gives money for free, 8 billion in loans. We can renegotiate and change it to some equity for naval bases maybe?

LOL. All the best, though if I were you, I wont be holding my breath

If China turns the money losing idle port into a cash machine and bring in tons of business opportunities to this general region, I don't see there is any bit of loss for the part of Sri Lanka government. What are better designs for this port by you Indians by the way? China takes much more risk than the Sri Lanka government, every investment involves risks of losing all your money and China decided to take this risk. Sri Lanka, sitting pretty as a landlord, I don't see anything they can lose in this deal.
