Hambantota Port: Joint venture between China and Sri Lanka begins operations

China did a lot of write-offs for African countries but I agree that China doesn't do business like that, China invests and makes sure those projects will be making profits, Chinese are good business bunch.
Chinese armtwisted those african nations and termed money as write-off. technically Srilankan port will be as an write-off in terms of economics :)
But they got control of a port in strategic location. Give and take.
Same will happen to pakistan starting from stock exchange, ports, roads to airports to name all key strategic installations.

By 2020, the Hambantota port revenue will account for 40% of the Sri Lanka government's revenue and will create 10 thousand direct and more than 60 thousand indirect employment opportunities. Plus China agree to invest 5 billion US dollars to build an Sino-Lanka industrial park in Hambantota.

This is why Sri Lanka government cooperate with China. Hambantota is the 'largest deep sea port' in South Asia.

And can you tell us which Nation is the PRIMARY customer of the "largest deep sea port" in South Asia? Who is all their transshipment going to service ? :P

Indians are just impossible, all Chinese investments must be bad for the countries who receive them. What kind of mentality is that?

This is a big win for OBOR. With this port, Sri Lanka will be fully integrated into the project along with CPEC.

You're quite funny. Who is the largest customer is not important, if India ship want to dock in the port, pay the fee, it's same for Chinese ship. This is how business operate. One point for sure, Chinese ships are one of the major customers of the port, they will prefer to renew provision in Hambantota, not in India. If India become major customer of this port, you're warmly welcomed indeed, don't forget Chinese firms is the major stake holder, why not earn money from Indian customers?

This is pure business, you need abandon cold war mentality.

How so ? :cheesy:

The port is on Lease to china. SL has no role to play in OBOR.

Sri Lanka government has 30% stock share of the whole port. The lease of 99 years is for 'authority of business operation' on the land of the port. It's useless to spread funny rumor.
The Hambantota port is NOT ONLY part of OBOR, it's the KEY PROJECT of OBOR in India Ocean region..

I have no problem, only Transshipment is valuable and profitable only if the Indian govt. does not impose tariff on ships that dock in SL and carry goods to India. :disagree:

For now it happens because Indian ports have no capacity.

But in the future, India is building deep ports in Vizhinjam, Enayam , Ramayapatnam and Sagar Island.

How the market will play-out is anybody's guess.

What rumor ? SL just lost their port to china and that is no rumor.

If this is what OBOR stands for, then I doubt anybody would be excited. But that is just my opinion.

Congrats to China. This was a strategic and cunning investment that paid off. We should learn from the Chinese on how to be such future thinking and cunning as well. Not sure if it's good or bad for Sri Lanka only time would say. But in my books, any country that sells it's sovereign land to another country is a failed one. We need to rethink our strategy and plan for future.

Actually I think Hong Kong's case was a good one. When China was weak and poor, for China she just lost a tiny finishing village of several hundreds fishermen for a century. That village called Hong Kong wouldn't help China in any sense back then when China had nothing. A hundred years later the whole world knows Hong Kong , Shenzhen and Macau.

When China hands over another Hong Kong back to Sri Lanka in a century's time, You can't that a bad thing for the country.

Wrong Example.

Hong Kong was a Gateway to CHINA.

Same as Mumbai was to India.

Hambantota is neither. Its not even a Singapore.

Its a false equivalence designed to fool the public.

This port can be another Singapore due to its crossroads location between East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Hong Kong's location is no match for this port, still Hong Kong was pretty rich when China was still very very poor.

HongKong was the gateway to China that is why HK was rich.

Same for why Bombay is rich as compared to rest of India.

or why Karachi is rich when compared to rest of pakistan.

Singapore is a land locked city where the population has nowhere else to go. Also Singapore was the US gateway to Asia and south east Asia.

Hambantotat has no such restricts or opportunities, hence it cannot be another Singapore either.

Sri Lanka is the hub location for the world trading routes, China won't invest billions in a strategically no value location. Every sighted person can clearly see how important this country's location is in the world trading routes.
