In a startling saga of compromises made on the safety and capability of India’s frontline fighter aircraft besides posing danger to the life of pilots, it has come to light that at least 18 of brand new Sukhoi 30 MKI had been fitted with already-used and secondhand engines. “It was noticed while checking the records…that AL 31FP engines fitted in certain aircraft was in Cat B condition at the time of inspection / delivery to Indian Air Force (IAF),” said a report encapsulating the findings that have been accessed by this newspaper. The IAF’s frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI is a multipurpose twin-seater supersonic fighter aircraft which is powered by two AL-31FP aero engines. While this fitment of Cat 2 (category B) or secondhand engines into brand new Sukhoi 30 MKIs was done at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) facility at Nashik “without the knowledge and approval of the defence ministry”, what is surprising is the acceptance of such aircraft by the IAF. “Certain aircraft with one new and one old engine were wrongly accepted by IAF and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance. As these arrangements were not in tune with contractual provisions, it should have been rejected by IAF and DGAQA…. In any case, IAF should have obtained approval from MoD for accepting aircraft with one second hand engine.” Sukhoi 30 MKI has two AL 31FP engines 18 Su 30 MKIs fitted with old engines Poses reliability and safety risk Fitment violates contractual conditions India has about 230 operational fighters although just half is available for operational flights at any given point of time 7 Sukhoi 30 MKIs have crashed to date, causing a loss of about Rs 2,350 crore

In depth inquiry should be ordered and need to fix culprit if this is NOT SOP.

The Journo should give second hand as in what ??? direct from Russia OR it is a refurbished Engine from its Nasik Plant ??? after its MTBO schedule !!

If so, what the SOP from IAF regarding this?? ... and Also the journo should be pulled up for Disinformation!!!

i don't get it you don't just have "used" engines laying around. engines that are off aircraft are either
  1. refurbished
  2. awaiting refurbishment
  3. purchased brand new or
  4. purchased used

There is too much corruption in India it is time to let go the made in India craze and buy directly from foreign countries cause made in India will not produce the products that are Made in USA or Made in Russia or Made in China.

Its our attempt to get the economy back on the manufacturing scale. I am sure you are pretty pissed off at this attempt of ours, but that is not going to stop us from achieving the target. There is corruption everywhere, do you propose to have trade relations with Aliens?

And where do you find OLD jet engines?
These Engines must only be used in Sinilar Sukhoi Flankers right.
And Why would anyone replace an engine on an advance machine like flanker unless it is from a decommissioned jet or older models like Su27 being upgraded.
That case it becomes Obsolete not second hand.
And i doubt an engine can be salvaged from a crashed aircraft. Or can it be?

That reply wonderfully showcases the duality of our friends on the other side.

They will taunt you for being the biggest buyer of arms every day. But will turn a blind eye to local products. Even in the presence of overwhelming evidence where local is better than the alternatives, they will mock your efforts and prove you that your product is siht even if they have compare nos of analog dials present in the cockpit. And if they find any negative information about news about the local production, well then it's chicken dinner for them.

Anyways moving on, I find the report a bit confusing. How was the engine used?

Definitely Corruption on high level...top officer involved.......

How Impressive My enemies should applaud DRDO are showing their Concern!!

Art of War says if your enemy is Strong appreciate him so much that his ego kills him rather than your Arrow

seems like HAL and DRDO are really incompetent and corrupt
