A good article. Yes we have serious problems with our higher education system. Commercialisation and corporatisation of the education system in India has to be checked. I am aware of numerous private institutes and colleges offering professional and technical degrees which are no more than money making machines. We have lalas and seths and other petty businessmen who finance these institutes and all they are interested in is making a hefty profit on their investments. As a result, the faculty hired is substandard, libraries and labs under equipped and basic infrastructure missing. There are many institutes offering MBA degrees who have as their faculty, people who failed to make the cut in the industry and so started teaching marketing or business economics. What will be the fate of students graduating from these places? The Sixth Pay commission has recommended hefty salary hikes for lecturers, professors, associate professors and the like in the hope of attracting better talent to the profession of education. Most if not all state governments have implemented these recommendations. How effective has that been? Has there been any visible rising of levels of the quality of faculty available? Or is it going to take longer for the difference to become noticeable?

I hope that the HRD ministry is aware of the problems. Drastic measures are needed to pull the higher education system out of its present sick state. If they fail to attend to this issue, the future of our children and their children will not be a very happy one.

The article is better than I expected.

Important issues raised, none that we are not aware of.

You are putting China with PCI less than 5K (give or take) in same league with that of US (48K PCI) and you are calling others for reality check? Do you guys even read the bs you write?
.......

kid thats not my opinion, thats what the global luxury market report puts china on the top 4list``besides im in luxury industry its easiy for me to get those sensitive reports and figures from luxury stores (all kind of brands) and know reality better than your ignorance and denial.

within our industry we have been hearing a lot of noises of 'Indian market well be this good and that good' for 10 years since 2001, but thats it, just niose nothing more.

dont trust me`? just visit those places do a reality check yourself for the sake of your ignorance and denial

 They're just pissing their pants that Modi won't cower down like Munni-mohan not-so-singh and Madam G to external pressure. But that's the way world is; it has its set of loonies and its set of visionaries. Haters will hate.

No the Guardian is wrong. India needs to buy more Eurofighters, hypersonic missiles and missile defense shield to dominate its neighbors and become the #1 Asian superpower. Then it can lift the vast majority of its population out of poverty.

Aaah! Finally you understand. I knew one day you will fall in line.

Lift yourself out of ignorance. We buy Eurofighters and make missiles, because we have a neighbor like China.

I feel that a lot of academicians and upper middle class people in India are getting experiencing luxury of the rapidly growing market economy while the rest of the country remains undeveloped and experiences massive poverty. A lot of these upper middle class people are sellouts to the capitalist West and love to talk about how great America, Europe, and Israel and want India to align itself with the West and continue developing under a free market model.

What's really worrisome is that these guys are becoming stronger politically to the point that they blindly support the fascist Anna Hazare in holding the entire government hostage.

Yes indeed its a sad situation where the rich get richer and the poor simply cant get any poorer. What the heck will they do with all the billions they loot? To deprive children and the poor of basic needs is a humanitarian crime - i hope they sleep well knowing this. Well said Birbal

Indians need a big-time reality check. They hide so much dirt under the carpet and love to live in fantasy world.

Only behind the computer they dream about being superpower but in reality all of them dream about leaving their india and rush to the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Australia, etc...

If we hid so much dirt under the carpet, you wouldnt know about it. We have no qualms about admitting that we have a long way to go.

Yes, we do go to other countries for education and better job. But we dont leave India, we come back.
