Move on for rail, road link with Myanmar
The newly elected democratic government of Myanmar is keen to rapidly improve bilateral relations and mutual cooperation with Bangladesh.

This was conveyed when Lt Gen Myat Hein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) of Myanmar Air Force, called on President Zillur Rahman at Bangabhaban yesterday.

“We've a new government and its aim is to rapidly increase cooperation with Bangladesh,” General Myat Hein said.

Apprising the president that Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Gen Abdul Mubeen is expected to visit Myanmar next month, he said: “We're interested to promote relations between the armed forces.”

General Myat Hein lauded the National Defence College (NDC) of Bangladesh and expressed his hope that Myanmar forces would be sent to take training in NDC of Bangladesh in future.

Welcoming the Myanmar air chief at Bangabhaban, Zillur said Bangladesh has taken initiative to establish direct rail and road connectivity with Myanmar.

He said such direct connectivity will help expand trade and commercial activities between the two countries in the days to come.

The president emphasised exchange of military trainings by members of the armed forces of the two countries.

Newly-appointed Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh U Min Lwin and secretaries to the President's Office were present.

Hmm...well an alternate route was already on the cards...you can say its a stepping stone towards it...!

I am just curious......

Who will pay to build the roads?
How much will be the transit fees?
Who will pay for the wear and tear on the roads?

We pay for about 23 km road construction inside Burma. Transit fee has not yet been decided. About maintenance of road, nothing has yet been discussed.

So if you got a better deal on transit fees, road maintenance etc. than you would charge the Indians, would you say that you are screwing the Myanmarese, or that your govt negotiated the best deal for Bangladesh?

On the other hand if you got a worse deal would you say that both India and Myanmar are screwing you?
 
if coxsbazar has a international airport then Myanmar citizens should be permitted to use it to go to myanmer.

BD govt can issue double entry visa to them.

it will be a good process to improve our relation.

at present air route to reach Rangoon is vis bankook which is a longer route and demand more money.

China is a major ally of burma, thus there is bound to be a lot of roads that link burma to china.
In a economic piont of view, burma is a better choice than india for transits as burma is situated nearer to the major chinese cities. Furthermore, the indian route passes through the himalayas, which can become quite a harsh environment during winter

Is Himalayan route your personal proposal? i have never read a report in the newspaper that says of such a route to China. PDF threads should not be referred for this. Burma is not an alternative route as some people are trying to imply. It is the ONLY route that has been discussed between BD and China.
 
No it isnt, i am just making a point to nomad why bangladesh is chose burma instead of india

as you already gave answer in your post no. 10 and we all agreed to it
do not include India in your talks... and stick to the topic

Well, if even Myanmar gets a better deal, we dont mind. Its because Myanmar is lagging bangladesh by miles in economic front and they dont have capacity to build roads for them let alone for us. We are going there for our own benifit and while in the process of allowing us the transit myanmar will be benifitted too. The same goes for Bhutan and Nepal where we have trade deficit yet we want more import from them.

In case of India, we expect to have a trade surplus with them as well as want them to pay for the transit as India has the capacity. We cant extend charity to India, its just common sense.

actually india often comes in discussion because of illogical indian attitude.

india prefer transit not a international highway which will connect a third country.

india should have minimum shame before avoiding transit fee !!!!
