The QS World University Ranking for 2016/17, the thirteenth of its kind, was released on Tuesday with Chinese mainland universities grabbing three places in top 50 for the first time, second only to the US and the UK, chinanews.com reported.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology tops the list for the fifth consecutive year. Tsinghua, Peking and Fudan universities rank No 24, 39 and 43 on the list, respectively.

The respected annual ranking is formulated by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company founded in 1990, specializing in education and study abroad programs.

The result is based on a set of criteria designed to reflect key priorities for universities, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students, according to the education institution.

It is the first time Fudan University has been included in the top 50, jumping from No 51 last year and No 71 the year before. The progress reflects Fudan University's efforts in research, teaching, employability, internationalization and accumulation of its reputation.

Using China's universities as examples, QS said top universities dominated by the US and the UK were "facing a growing challenge from the world's emerging economic powers".

Slowly but steadily our ranking is increasing every year. Tsinghua, Peking, and others are well sought after by Chinese. Unfortunately, only limited space and score to get in is too high. Leaving no other choice, some Chinese will attend foreign universities.

OMG, my uni is among top100...
I know Chinese universities are generally underrated....
But it's still good news.

I'm not happy Fudan is better!!!:disagree::disagree::disagree::disagree::disagree:
It's discriminatory towards technology-based subjects!

Strong upwards momentum for Asia’s HE hubs
The ranking shows progress for some (though not all) of the world’s fast-developing economies, including both China and Russia, and for leading higher education hubs across Asia.

China now has three universities in the global top 50; Tsinghua (=24) is joined by Peking University, which climbs two places to 39th, and Fudan University, which climbs eight positions to 43rd. Eight of the C9 group have improved their overall positions this year, with eight of these nine also gaining ground in the indicator assessing research impact.

There’s also a more general pattern of upwards momentum for institutions across Asia’s leading higher education hubs. All but one of Hong Kong’s seven featured institutions have moved up this year, with three featuring in the top 50. Both South Korea and Malaysia see their leading institutions continue to climb, and – after several years of decline – there’s a more positive picture this year for Japan as well, with 14 of the top 20 Japanese universities moving up.

The majority of Russian universities featured in the ranking have also improved their positions this year – four of them by more than 100 places. Though the nation has yet to break into the global top 100, its leading entrant, Lomonosov National State University, stays stable just outside, at 108th.

National funding key to rankings progress?
While high levels of national investment and dedicated programs such as Russia’s 5-100 initiative and China’s 211 and 985 projects appear to be paying off, other nations are struggling to keep pace. The table this year shows institutions losing ground across most of Western and Southern Europe, as well as much of Latin America.

These patterns largely correlate with current and planned funding trends, as QS’s head of research, Ben Sowter, has suggested: “It’s not universal, but it seems clear, based on a strongly identifiable pattern, that institutions and systems with consistent or improving funding are gaining ground, whilst those being squeezed are losing out.”

A notable exception to this pattern is the US, whose institutions continue to go from strength to strength in the rankings, even amidst ongoing concerns about university funding and student debt. Many US institutions have maintained or improved their positions this year, and the country claims almost a quarter (48) of the top-200 entries. This is also the first time since the inaugural 2004/5 edition that US universities have occupied all three top spots.

The picture is not quite so bright for fellow higher education heavyweight, the UK. Though still making 30 appearances in the top 200, many UK universities have fallen in the table this year. Like many of their counterparts across continental Europe, British institutions are amongst those being forced to give way, as rising stars elsewhere in the world stake their claim to a place among the best.

About the QS World University Rankings®
Published annually, the QS World University Rankings provides an index of the world’s leading higher education institutions, based on six performance indicators. The ranking has been expanded this year to feature 916 universities (25 more than last year) in 81 countries, following an assessment of more than 3,800 institutions. The results are presented in an interactive table, which can be filtered by both location and indicator.

In 2013, QS became the first compiler of international rankings to be independently audited and approved by the IREG Observatory on Academic Rankings and Excellence. Alongside the QS World University Rankings, the "IREG Approved" label is also carried by the QS University Rankings: Asia and the QS University Rankings: Latin America.

I find the most Economic and Finance Universities are underestimated by QS.
For example, Central University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics are not listed on the top 200 entries.

Colleges/universities dominated by humanities generally have very bad ranking....
The university you mention is undoubtedly one of the best in China, sometimes have higher entrance requirement compared to Beijing Uni, but just not really a comprehensive university....

I don't see any Indian university in the list, how is that possible? Any Indians can shed more insights to this?

I don't see Indian university not within the "TOP 100" list as a surprise, in fact its been like that for decades
You're what you're regarding university ranking, India is no exception, you suck, you're out, as simple as that
As a Chinese, of cos i'm proud of Chinese universities are on the rapid rising trend.

unfortunately, universities in my hometown HK are on a free fall in basically all rankings, guess thats what happened when people has forgotten what got us to be one of the most successfully city in the world, sure its not as a political fanatic city but by hard work, exceptional high intelligence and superior adaptation to changes

NUS, NTU retain top 15 spots in QS world university rankings

SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have maintained their spots among the top 15 varsities in the world, according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) global university rankings for 2016/2017 released on Tuesday (Sep 6).

Last year, the two varsities rose to the top 15 for the first time, with NUS coming in 12th and NTU 13th. They retained the same positions for this year's rankings.

Both universities surpassed Ivy League schools including Yale University and Cornell University in the United States, which took the 15th and 16th places respectively.

The Singapore Management University (SMU) also made its debut in this year's edition, entering in the 431-440 band. Its highest scores were for its international faculty ratio, rating as the university with the world’s 31st most international faculty. In comparison, NTU ranked 19th worldwide for this metric, while NUS ranked 25th.

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology emerged top in this year’s global rankings, while Stanford University overtook Harvard University to take second place. The University of Cambridge, which shared third place with Stanford University last year, slipped down to fourth place, meaning US institutions took all of the top-three places for the first time since the inaugural rankings in 2004.

NUS and NTU also remained the only two Asian universities in the global top 20, with China's Tsinghua University the next closest at 24th place.

QS head of research Ben Sowter said this year's rankings implied that levels of investment were determining the progression of colleges.

"Institutions in countries that provide high levels of targeted funding, whether from endowments or from the public purse, are rising," he explained.

"On the other hand, Western European nations making or proposing cuts to public research spending are losing ground to their US and Asian counterparts."

NTU President Bertil Andersson said Singaporeans should be proud that it was the only country other than Switzerland to break the UK-US duopoly among the top global universities.

“Singapore and Switzerland are similar in many ways -- both are small but smart nations," said Prof Andersson.

QS ranked a total of 916 institutions this year. It surveyed more than 74,600 academics and 47,700 employers, and more than 3,800 institutions were considered.

Yep. Singapore's 3rd university, SMU, is ranked 400+ although it has consistently gotten higher starting pay than much higher ranked NUS/NTU. That's because an important criteria is 'research and citation', which Business Universities lack.

Worse ranking than the previous year? :o:

Same here. Many in the 100-200 bracket will be in top100 within one decade.
Many in the 300-500 bracket are rapidly improving....
I am very confident in universities in mainland China, HK and Singapore.
Investment and handwork will pay back!
The best university in Guangzhou is not among top 100, this is crazy!

We at least should improve 20 universities to enter top100 in the future.
