NEW DELHI: The government plans to match the anti-India propaganda riding the airwaves from neighbouring countries with a glut of transmitters of its own. An inter-ministerial group is likely to be constituted soon to prioritize infrastructure build-up, including by the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati.
Among those that are likely to be included in the consultation are the national security advisor, ministries of defence, home affairs and information and broadcasting. The government will invest about Rs 300 crore. Doordarshan is expected to set up at least 10 high-power transmitters along the international border and upgrade and set up 25 low-power transmitters. All India Radio is expected to set up 72 FM transmitters.
I&B secretary Uday Kumar Varma said it was felt that a system must be put in place where suggestions can be made regarding countering anti-India propaganda from across the borders. "The government believes that a strategic plan for the communication needs of border areas was urgently needed and that a campaign regarding peculiar issues being faced by the region should be taken up on a priority basis.''
He added that the defence and home ministries would advise the I&B ministry on locations, manpower and content that is aired.
The bordering areas to be chosen for strengthening of coverage are those along Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is understood that a meeting of the inter-ministerial consultative panel will be held soon where a detailed presentation will be made by the I&B ministry.
