Cheap Price? mate we paid almost 2 billion for it way above the quoted price, we are also paying for the sub we are not getting them for free.

On what basis did the govt entail just 3900 crores for building an AC? That's not even a Fking Billion. When this project was finalized a dollar was like 45 to a rupee, which makes it something like 850 million dollars for a carrier?

This is also not the first time Russia had overshot the target price almost all major project we did with Russia costed more than they intended them to cost.

If cost overruns for building very first time is acceptable for you,then you should vaccept the fact that the refurbishment has started after 16years of USSR breakups. All the expertise has lost in that time frame,that refurbishment is as difficult as building a new carrier.

No. Its the IAC1. Article says the cost of IAC jumped from 3900 to 19000 today. But even 7-8 years back how can one construct an carrier in 4000 crores?

It would be helping if it were free, since when is it acceptable for a customer to not complain about cost overruns. Russians were not doing us a favor here they got paid for the work. And also there are a handfull of countries that operate ACC, and only one or two at most, they can barely support their own requirements why would they sell theirs to others. The only reason Russia sold it to us was because it was rusting away and they found a quick way of making some money. There is no helping here, it is purely business, and as such a customer has every right here to put up the issues of cost overrun. There is no point here for blind friendship.

So what the USSR collapsed? Does it change the fact that a company grossly underestimated the timeframe for refurbishment and the amount of refit. If they were unable to do it they should have just said that from the beginning rather than making up the numbers.

If India can't produce the steel to build a carrier, than it has no business building a carrier. It's not the gearbox or the engine here, it's the steel for the AC. Shouldn't India master the skill to manufacture basic commodities such as AC quality steel before it build the AC?

But the fact is Vikrant is ultimately built with Indian steel only, not Russian.

“(The DRDO’s) research project worth about Rs 4.2 crore has now led to the supply of steel worth about Rs 550 crore,” points out Dr G Malkondaiah, former DMRL Director who oversaw this project closely.

Being used on the INS Vikrant are three special steels — DMR 249A for the hull and body; and DMR 249B, a more resilient steel, which is used for the flight deck that must take the repeated impact of 20-30 tonne fighter aircraft landing. In 2008, DMR Z25 was developed for the floor of compartments that housed heavy equipment like engines and generators. This absorbs the compression and decompression from the heavy equipment.

In the pipeline now is DMR 292A, which will be used for the hull of submarines. This could be used in six conventional submarines that will be built under Project 75I, and in India’s entire fleet of nuclear submarines.
